KEY PLAYS/STRETCH • Murray State’s biggest lead was eight, 26-18, fol-lowing a 30-footer by Rick Jones with 7:35 to play in the fi rst half. The Tigers, however, were inspired by a pow-erful one-hand jam by freshman Rodney Carney which sparked a 13-2 run. After Carney’s dunk, Anthony Rice followed with a steal and a layup and then John Grice knocked down a three-pointer to cut the Racers’ lead to one. Grice gave the Tigers a 29-28 lead on a rainbow jumper as the Tigers scored nine straight.

NOTES • In just two games, Chris Massie is averaging a dou-ble-double ... in the second half. In both games Massie has been limited by early foul trouble. But, in the second half, the senior is averaging 12.5 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 92 percent from the fi eld (11-of-12).• In just two games, Massie has become the team’s co-leader in double-doubles.• Against Murray State, Massie was 8-for-8 from the fi eld, marking the fi rst time a Tiger shot perfect from the fi eld since Modibo Diarra went 5-for-5 against Kansas State two years ago to the day.• Memphis is now 2-0 when it outrebounded by an opponent. Murray State outrebounded the Tigers by fi ve, 44-39. Memphis was also outrebounded in its season opener against Syracuse (45-43).• The Tigers shot just 15 percent from three-point range against Murray State, making just 3-of-20 shots from behind the arc. The U of M also shot less than 20 percent from behind the arc against Missouri and, through nine games, is shooting 30.5 percent.• Memphis ended calendar year 2002 with its third-straight win and was 24-8 in ’02. It was the best year in UofM basketball history since the Tigers went 24-6 in 1995. That season included an NCAA Sweet 16 appear-ance and the 1996 squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Page 20: Memphis Men's Basketball Game Notes - vs. Murray State - December 11, 2011

Memphis kicked off the season in impressive fashion with a 97-81 win over Bel-mont in the opening game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Three players scored at least 20 points, including 22 from Wesley Witherspoon, who was a perfect 8-of-8

from the fi eld. Will Barton was the Tigers’ leading scorer with a career-high 23 points, while Joe Jackson added 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Freshman Adonis Thomas shined in his Tigers debut with 12 points. The Tigers shot nearly 59 percent from the fi eld. A Belmont team that lost to No. 6 Duke by one point in its opener Nov. 11 managed just 39 percent shooting and had 18 turnovers. Despite an 11 a.m. tip, the Tigers showed no signs of sluggishness, as Memphis jumped out to a 16-4 lead. J.J. Mann ended the Bruins drought with a 7-0 scoring spurt of his own just before the 12-minute mark, and an-other Belmont free throw at 11:36 cut the lead to 16-12. From there, the Bruins matched Memphis bucket-for-bucket to stay within three at 39-36 with three min-utes remaining. However, it was defensive pressure that allowed the Tigers to score seven of the last 10 points in the half and take a 46-39 lead into the locker room. The Tigers began the second half much as they did the fi rst, with a 5-of-5 shooting start and a 13-2 run to take a 59-44 lead with 17 minutes left to play. A jumper from Thomas at the 11:39 mark gave Memphis a com-manding 72-54 lead. That would be the last Memphis fi eld goal for al-most four minutes as Belmont went on a 12-1 run once again assisted by the free throw line to cut the defi cit to just seven points at 73-66. The Bruins refused to go away, however, as they used three-straight treys to keep it close and still trail by just seven points at 84-77 with less than four minutes left in the game. But, the Tigers kept their composure and came alive down the stretch with a 12-2 run to push the lead back to double digits at 96-79 with one minute left.

Tigers Tails• Josh Pastner won his 50th career

game with the win and is fastest coach in Memphis history to get to the 50-win milestone.

• Memphis scored 97 points, the most in a game since putting up 102 points against Tennes-see Martin in a 22-point win last season (11-23-10)

• For the game, Memphis shot 58.6 percent (34-of-58). The Tigers last shot over 50 percent in last season’s Conference USA Tournament-semifi nal win, 76-56, over East Carolina, when they went 27-of-53 (50.9 per-cent) from the fl oor.

Charles Carmouche’s team-high 14 points weren’t enough for No. 8/8 Memphis to overcome a strong shooting effort from the No. 15/15 Michigan Wolverines, as the Tigers fell 73-61 in their fi rst round game of the 2011 Maui Invitational.

Michigan shot 54 percent (27-of-50) from the fl oor while Memphis only connected on 33.3 percent (19-of-57) of its fi eld goal attempts. The Tigers were 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from three, compared to 6-of-20 (30.0 percent) for the Wolverines. The Wolverines started the game on fi re, connecting on 7 of their fi rst 8 shots. Mean-while, the Tigers started a meager 3-of-10 to begin the game. Trailing 18-9 at the time, Memphis responded with a 10-2 run, on 4-of-5 shooting, to cut the Michigan lead down to a point. Memphis eventually tied the game and took the lead, 27-25, on three-straight layups by Carmouche. However, Michigan did not get rattled and scored ten unanswered points over the fi nal 3:02 to enter halftime with a 37-31 lead. After a sensational shooting performance against Belmont, Memphis shot only 35.5 percent (11-of-31), including a paltry 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from three-point range in the fi rst half. In contrast, Michigan shot 60 per-cent (15-of-25) from the fi eld and 30 percent (3-of-10) from three. A Will Barton three-point shot at the 15:32 mark of the second half pulled the Tigers within fi ve, 46-41, but the Wolverines responded with a 9-1 run over a span of 3:52 to regain control of the game. Michigan steadily increased its lead to as many as 14 points with 5:32 remaining. The Tigers used a 7-2 run to cut the lead to single digits, only to have the Wolverines again push the lead out to as many as 15 points. Memphis protected the ball, only committing eight turnovers, while forcing Michigan into 13 miscues, but Michigan fi nished with a decided advantage, 38-29, on the boards.

Jason Clark hit a big 3-pointer in overtime and scored 26 points, helping George-town hold off No. 8 Memphis 91-88 in the fi fth-place game of the Maui Invitational on Wednesday.

Memphis and Georgetown didn’t look like two teams playing for fi fth place, trading monster dunks, 3-pointers and leads throughout regulation. The Hoyas (4-1) went up 90-86 in overtime after Clark hit a 3 with 51 seconds left and Markel Starks followed with two free throws. The Tigers (2-2) cut the lead to two on Stan Simpson’s two free throws and had a shot to tie after Georgetown’s Hollis Thompson made just 1 of 2 at the other end. But Memphis didn’t get a good look at the end of regulation and did it again in overtime, with Antonio Barton’s 3-pointer com-ing up well short at the buzzer. Henry Sims had 24 points and eight rebounds for Georgetown, while Thompson and Starks scored 12 each. Will Barton led Memphis with 22 points and Joe Jackson added 20. Memphis had trouble with patient and talented No. 15 Michigan in its tournament opener, un-able to get the 15th-ranked Wolverines to speed up in a 73-61 loss. Swapping acrobatic shots and deep 3-pointers, the Tigers and Hoyas had the crowd inside Lahaina Civic Center on its feet seemingly every other trip down the fl oor. Clark, who hit six 3-pointers and scored 28 points against Chaminade, had 17 by halftime, shooting 7 of 12. Starks chipped in 10 points and the Hoyas made 19 of 36 shots. The Tigers led by seven early, Georgetown an-swered with a 19-2 run to go up 10 and Memphis chipped away to get within 47-42 by halftime. Memphis had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but had trouble setting up a shot and Adonis Thomas’ 3-pointer was well off the mark.

In a double-overtime classic in the Maui Invitational, No. 8/8 Memphis used an Antonio Barton jumper to defeat Tennessee, 99-97. Will Barton led all-Tiger scorers with a career-high 25 points and a career-

high 11 rebounds en route to posting his fi rst double-double. Antonio Barton chipped in 21 points for the Tigers. Freshman Adonis Thomas had the best performance of his young career, with 19 points. With the game knotted up at 97, Antonio Barton knocked down a 15-foot jumper from the right wing to put Memphis up by two points with 1:14 left in the second overtime. Wesley Witherspoon picked up a loose ball along the baseline, but was called for traveling with a mere .8 seconds on the clock. Jeronne Maymon’s attempt fell short, preserving the double-overtime win for Memphis. Memphis found itself trailing in the fi rst overtime, 91-89, following a Josh Richardson contested three-point shot from the right wing. Chris Crawford took an outlet pass from Will Barton and attacked the rim for a game-tying layup. Maymon’s shot at the buzzer was well off the mark and the teams headed into double-overtime. Tennessee opened the second half on a 9-4 spurt to pull within fi ve points, but Memphis responded with fi ve in a row to regain a double-digit lead with 15:10 left. The Tigers maintained a relatively comfortable margin until the Vols went on a nine-point run to pull within a point, 77-76, with 3:38 remaining. With the Tigers leading by two points in the waning seconds, Tennessee’s Maymon fi nished a driving layup to tie the game. Will Barton raced down the court and put up a jumper from 12-feet out. His shot rimmed out, sending the game into overtime. Memphis (2-1) knocked down 36-of-70 (51.4 percent) shot attempts and limited Ten-nessee (2-2) to 30-of-74 (40.5 percent) shooting. The Tigers bench outscored the Vols, 52-25, but Memphis was outrebounded, 49-34, and gave up 29 second chance points.

No. 21/22 Memphis scored 15 unanswered points to open the second half and never looked back on its way to a 70-45 win over visiting Jackson State on Monday night. Joe Jackson led all scorers with 15 points, and Chris Crawford added 14 points for the Tigers. Memphis improved to 3-2 on the season while Jackson State fell to

1-7. Crawford scored eight points during the 15-point run to begin the second half of play, helping Memphis jump out to a 40-19 lead. After using four of its timeouts in the fi rst half, Jackson State only had one left to use in the second half and was forced to use it during the opening spurt by Memphis. A tightfi sted Tiger defense forced 23 turnovers by JSU, tallying 36 points off of the miscues. Jackson State was held to 16-of-52 shooting (30.8 percent), while Memphis con-nected on 26-of-49 (53.1 percent) from the fi eld. Despite a season-high 10 rebounds from Stan Simp-son, Memphis was outrebounded 36-29, continuing its struggles on the glass. The U of M outscored JSU in points in the paint, 38-16, and fast break points, 24-2. At the intermission, Memphis led 25-19 behind six points from Crawford and seven rebounds from Stan Simpson, who earned his fi rst start of the season for the Tigers. Memphis shot the ball well in the half, going 11-for-24 (45.8 percent), but the rebounding woes contin-ued. Jackson State outrebounded Memphis, 22-14, while only connecting on 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) shot attempts. Leading 11-6 coming out of the under-12 media timeout, Memphis surrendered a pair of baskets to Jack-son State’s Jenirro Bush and a free throw to Raymond Gregory, tying the game. Antonio Barton responded with a fl oater from the right side of the lane to stop the run. Adonis Thomas’ layup with 7:38 left in the half ig-nited a 10-0 Memphis run over the next 5:35. Jackson State was forced to call four timeouts during the stretch that was ended by a pair of free throws by Kelsey Howard. Bush led JSU in scoring with 11 points on 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) shooting. Kelsey Howard and Willie Readus each hauled in six boards.

Tigers Tails• With a 36-29 disadvantage on the

boards, Memphis has now been outrebounded in four of its fi ve games this season. However, the Tigers are 3-1 in those contests.

• After a 1-for-6 start from the free throw line, Memphis made 14 of its next 19 shots from the char-ity stripe to go 15-for-25 (.600) overall.

• Memphis’ 25 fi rst-half points are the fewest points scored by the Tigers in any half this season.

• Memphis began the second half with a 15-0 run over the fi rst four minutes.

Will Barton scored 22 points, grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds and dished out a career-high-tying six assists and Memphis connected on 15 three-point shots en route a 91-60 win over visiting Austin Peay. Adonis Thomas recorded 17 points on 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) shooting, including 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from three-point range.

Joe Jackson added 11 points and Tarik Black chipped in 10. Chris Crawford notched nine points and a game-high seven assists, which also ties his season-high. The 31-point victory is the largest of the season for the Tigers, who improve to 4-2. Austin Peay falls to 0-9 with the loss. Memphis’ 15 made three-point shots came on 25 attempts (60.0 percent), en route 32-of-56 (57.1 percent) shooting. The Tigers fi nished one three-pointer away from tying the school-record, 16, set against Marquette on February 14, 2004. Austin Peay struggled from the fl oor, fi nishing the game 24-of-72 (33.3 percent) and 2-of-10 from long-range. Just as they did in the fi rst 20 minutes, the Tigers dominated the second half. Jackson, Crawford, Thomas and Will Barton each scored during a 10-6 run to open the frame and Memphis never looked back. Antonio Barton took a scary tumble when he was fouled by the Governors’ Herdie Lawrence on a fast-break. Barton connected on one of the two free throws, putting the Tigers ahead, 73-42. Then came the high-fl ying acrobatics from the Ti-gers. With 8:48 remaining, Jackson stole the ball from Austin Peay and fed Black for a highlight-reel dunk in transition. The monstrous slam brought the crowd of 16,989 to its feet. Crawford ripped off a pass from the Governors, starting a Tiger-fast break, and laid the ball off of the backboard. D.J. Stephens came soaring through the air for another crowd-pleasing dunk, increasing Memphis’ lead to 86-54 with 2:48 left. Melvin Baker paced the Governors with 15 points, on 7-of-14 shooting, and seven rebounds. Will Triggs added fi ve points and collected a team-high eight boards.
