This is my Bible. I am what It says I am. I have what It says I have. I can do what It says I can do. Today I will be taught the Word of God. I boldly confess that my mind is alert, my heart is receptive and I will never be the same.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Pastor Martin Pickett

Pastor Pickett continues to defy description and labels by

integrating worship, praise, preaching, teaching and

encouragement.

Born and reared in Maple Hill, NC, Martin Pickett is the middle child of Samuel and Pearl Pickett. He was called to

preach at the tender age of 18. He was licensed to preach

in 1989 by the late Reverend C.W. Pate, the esteemed

Pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Maple

Hill, and ordained in 1996 by the Middle District Baptist

Association.

While attending the University of North Carolina, Reverend Pickett met and married

Angela S. Norman. They are the proud parents of three beautiful children: Marcia,

Solomon and Azeb.

Pastor Picket graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a

degree in Psychology and Biology. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Divinity with

emphasis in Pastoral Counseling from Shaw University School of Divinity.

He served as Youth Minister, Assistant Pastor and was Chaplain for the Forsyth

Department of Corrections’ Jail and Prison Ministries of Winston-Salem. He is the

youngest minister ever to serve as a chaplain for Forsyth County Department of

Corrections.

Pastor Pickett’s many accomplishments in ministry include being featured on the Tom

Joyner Morning Show for creating a book club for African-American males in a penal

institution. The Tom Joyner show donated the literary material to aid in the men’s

understanding of the life-changing power of knowledge.

After ten successful years of diligent service as Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church

Merrifield in Falls Church, Virginia, Reverend Martin Pickett was led by God to begin

again and establish Faith Encounters Community Church (FECC) in December 2016.

Since its inception in December, FECC has grown from 5 to over 50 members and

continues to grow weekly. Services are temporarily held at Vienna Assembly of God

Church in Vienna, VA.

Other major accomplishments Pastor Pickett has achieved as a pastor have been

ordination of several men and women in ministry, establishment of good rapport and

support of local churches, government, businesses, and the communities in Fairfax

County. Also, he actively supported a mission in Trinidad with Mt. Calvary Holy

Church of America under the great leadership of the presiding Prelate Bishop Alfred A.

Owens, Jr. and other missions such as Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico City, Ethiopia, The

United Kingdom, Brazil, and Zimbabwe.

Zimmerman, Matthew Augustus, Jr. (1941– )

Chaplain (Major General) Matthew Augustus Zimmerman Jr. is a retired American Army officer who served as the 18th Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army from 1990 to 1994. He was the first African American to hold this position. Zimmerman was born on December 9, 1941, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He attended a Baptist church where his father, the Reverend Matthew A. Zimmerman Sr., was a pastor. Zimmerman also attended an elementary school where his father was the principal. His mother, Alberta Zimmerman, taught him in the first grade.

At age sixteen, Zimmerman graduated from Sims High School in Union County, South Carolina, as class valedictorian. He then enrolled in Benedict College where he earned a degree in biology and chemistry in 1962. Zimmerman, who originally wanted to attend medical school, enrolled instead in the Duke University Divinity School on a fellowship. In 1965 he became the first African American to earn a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University. Later that year, he was ordained by the National Baptist Convention, Inc. USA.

Matthew Zimmerman entered the army on March 21, 1967, with a commission as first lieutenant. He completed the Chaplain Officer Basic Course at the U.S. Army Chaplain School in Fort Hamilton, New York, and was then assigned as chaplain with the U.S. Army Training Center (Infantry) at Fort Gordon, Georgia. In January 1968, Zimmerman was sent to South Vietnam as assistant chaplain with the United States Military Assistance Command. There he was promoted to captain, helping orphanages collect clothing and other needed supplies.

Between 1969 and 1974, Zimmerman ministered to soldiers and their families at Fort Hood, Texas, with the 1st Armored Division; in West Germany with the 3rd Armed Division, U.S. Army, Europe, and the Seventh Army. He was promoted to major on October 3, 1974, while a student in the Chaplin Officer Advanced Course at the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School located at Fort Wadsworth, New Jersey. In 1975 Zimmerman received a Master’s Degree in Education from Long Island University in New York. In June 1975, he joined the Office of the Chief of Chaplains, U.S. Army in Washington D.C. as an operators’ training staff officer. Three years later, he returned to Europe as deputy corps chaplain with VII Corps and the Seventh Army.

On August 6, 1979, Zimmerman was promoted to colonel. In July 1980, he was named division staff chaplain with the 3rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army, Europe, and the Seventh Army, but in June 1982, he returned to the United States to attend the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. The following year, Zimmerman took on duties of assistant command chaplain, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, Virginia.

On July 1, 1984, Zimmerman was appointed command staff chaplain at Forces Command (FORSCOM), Fort McPherson, Georgia. In August 1989, he served as deputy chief of chaplains for the army. Zimmerman was promoted brigadier general on October 1, 1989 and to major general on August 1, 1990. That same year, he also became the first African American chief of chaplains for the army. In 1994 Zimmerman retired from the army as major general. Zimmerman is a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

USDA STEAM Summer Camp

The USDA in partnership with George Washington University is

offering a free summer camp focusing on using Open Data for

high school students ages 15 - 17. One definition of Open Data

with-These-Tips.html) "…is the idea that some data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control."

USDA Office of the Chief Information Officer and the Data

Science Program at George Washington University are teaming

up to design and deliver a tuition-free "summer camp" in 2018

for high-school students (ages 15-17) in the Washington Metro

Area that focuses on using Open Data related to Science,

Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Math (STEAM).

This two-week long (July 23-August 3, 2018) project-based

Summer Camp will introduce participants to the use of data for

making important decisions, in the context of the USDA's work

with food nutrition, forestry, and urban agriculture.

The camp will take place on the GWU campus in Corcoran Hall

from July 23rd until August 3rd from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
