SPRING FLEX SPECIAL FEATURE

DISTANCE EDUCATION Summit January 11, 2018, 9-4PM

Distance Education: Focusing on Student Success

9 AM – 12 PM: Lene Whitley Putz, California Community Colleges’ Online Education Initiative 10 Minutes, 10 Hours, 10 Days: Scaffolding Student Success from Day One

Sometimes it’s hard to remember how it felt to be a student, but your students’ success depends on it. To

design better courses and support student success, we need strategies for helping us look at our courses

from our students’ perspectives. Designing your course to help students in those key first moments – the

first 10 minutes, the first 10 hours, and the first 10- days – allows you to build in support and engagement

for every student. There are many design tips and Canvas tools, from homepage and syllabus design, to

Canvas communication tools, that will help you create a welcoming, supportive, learning-focused

environment for your students.

1 PM – 2 PM: Jon Stocker, Educational Technology Specialist, Merced College Making Moving Pictures Easy: Zoom, Camtasia, Spark, and Your Online Course

Give your students a moving experience: Grab your lecture with Zoom, give it a quick edit in Camtasia,

turn it into a learning experience with EdPuzzle and have results populate the Canvas gradebook

automatically. Will also demonstrate a new use for Zoom in the classroom, and how to build existing

video into an Adobe Spark Video.

2 PM – 3 PM: Michael Smedshammer, Instructional Designer, MJC Five Ways to Leverage Canvas to Improve Student Equity

Gaps between online and on-campus retention and success tend to be wider when we look at

disadvantaged socio-economic groups. Unfortunately, research primarily targets on-campus strategies for

improving retention and success as they relate to student equity. Modern LMS’s now offer easy-to-use

tools for applying some of what research tells us about helping disadvantaged students become more

successful. This session will highlight the top five ways of using a learning management system to

improve retention and success, particularly among students from disadvantaged groups.

3 PM – 4 PM Joanne Glantz, Instructional Technology Coach Driving Student Engagement through Educational Technology

A session to provide instructors with activities and tips and tricks to actively engage online students in

order to increase student retention and success. This session is focused on engaging millennial students through technology.

See next page for registration details. See event flier attached at the end of the brochure for additional details!
