Over the past two seasons, lofty marks have been set and reached by the Mercer women’s soccer program. The pinnacle of those achievements came last year as the Bears won their fi rst regular season Atlantic Sun Conference championship in program history. The 2008 edition captured 11 victories equaling the mark set by the 1991 and 2007 squads. Last season, Mercer also played in its fi rst A-Sun Tournament championship game in program history.

The 2007 and 2008 A-Sun Coach of the Year, Grant Serafy, knows the bar has been set high for this year’s team. The Bears lost fi ve seniors from its championship squad, but do return eight starters and 14 letter winners. “We lost some key players from last year, but return a pretty good nucle-us,” he said. Still, with experience returning, Serafy said some questions must be answered.

“Filling the center-defender position Heather Manting, the 2008 A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, played so well for us last year will be key,” he said. “One of our question marks will be up front. Who is going to score goals and how will we do a better job in the attack?

“Besides that, leadership is the biggest question. Heather and Katheryn Hurst were the captains and such good leaders. Heather was such a good player and leader on the fi eld. Those kinds of things are hard to replace. Who’s going to lead the team and how they will be led is a big question mark for us.”

Goalkeeper

Back in goal for Mercer is all-conference net minder, Jean Worts. The junior led the A-Sun in goals against average (0.51) and yielded the fewest goals (nine). According to Serafy, she is “one of the better keepers in the league.” Providing support and competition in goal will be sophomores Cris-tina Guilarte and Cagney Valloch along with in-coming freshman, Caitlin Barth.

Defenders

“We return our starting goalkeeper and three of the four backs that were part of the sixth best defensive team in the country,” Serafy said. “We feel like that part of our team will be a strength.” The back four will be led by another all-conference performer, junior Ka-cie Hudson. A pair of juniors, Raschelle Riley and Lizzy Shaughnessy, will handle the left and right back positions.

Others vying for playing time include Jessie Kupstas (So.) and Vanessa Breslin (So.), Patricia-Anne Upson (Fr.) and Kate Alderman (Fr.). “It will be highly competitive for those four back posi-

Mercer returns Kaelyn Horton (Jr.) and 2008 A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Olivia Tucker, as the starting defensive midfi elders. Tucker led Mercer in goals scored (10) in 2008, also rank-ing her fourth in the A-Sun. Serafy said the sophomore “will be expected to continue her success at that position.”

Gone is assist leader Meghan Costaldo. Can-didates to replace her include Emily Milone (So.), and Mgehan O’Rourke (Fr.).

Forwards

Stepping in to fi ll the shoes of departing center-forward Erin Theobald will be sophomore Ali Meek, member of the 2008 A-Sun All-Freshmen team. Junior Lauren Johnson returns to man the right wing. Serafy says several players will make it “a competitive battle up there.”

The players competing for playing time on the front line include Sara Elliot (Jr.), Daniell Hesse (Fr.), Emerald Phillips (So.), Milone and O’Rourke. “Elliot is expected to do very well for us up top,” Se-rafy said. “She had a very good spring. If Emerald comes back ready to go, she will challenge for time. She has good pace and we are expecting good things from her, also.”

Schedule

The A-Sun will be tough, as usual. In the 2009 A-Sun preseason coaches poll, the Bears were picked to fi nish second, behind conference favorite Kennesaw State.

The Bears open theier exhibition season with Southeastern Conference foe, Alabama, in Tusca-loosa. After a home and season opener against always formidable Jacksonville State, Mercer hits the road to battle SEC stalwarts, Vanderbilt and Georgia. During an early September three-match home stand, the Bears will entertain Big 10 power, Indiana University.

“We always like to play a tough non-conference schedule,” Serafy commented. “Our belief is number one, we want to be a nationally successful Division I program so we have to play those programs to accomplish that goal. Two, it is going to prepare us for conference play. We are ex-cited about the challenge ahead of us.”

Grant Serafy enters his sixth season at the helm of the Bears after leading Mercer to the 2008 A-Sun regular season conference title, Mercer’s fi rst in its program’s history. He became the fi rst coach in Atlantic Sun history to win back-to-back Coach of the

Year awards and saw fi ve of his players make either fi rst or second team All A-Sun and two others place on the All-Freshman squad. Se-nior Heather Manting was named A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year. Last season’s team tied for most overall season victories (11) in school history, yielded only 10 goals, four in conference play, and played in the A-Sun Tournament championship game, losing a heartbreaker to Kennesaw State, 2-1.

Under his tutelage, Mercer has experienced new levels of success. The 2008 team set records including most conference wins (9) in a season, tied for the most overall victories (11) with the 1991 squad, and became the fi rst Mercer women’s soccer team to win an A-Sun tour-nament match. They also advanced to the A-Sun Championship fi nal.

A breakthrough campaign for Serafy and the Bears came in 2006 as Mercer notched a pair of feats that had not been achieved since 1998. Among the accomplishments, Mercer reached the Atlantic Sun Tournament and fi nished with a winning conference record. The Bears also had a player earn fi rst-team all-conference honors for the fi rst time since 2001.

Perhaps more important than the team’s results, Serafy has brought in high-caliber players. His hard work on the recruiting trail has revitalized the program as Mercer’s 2005 and 2008 recruiting classes have been ranked fi rst in the conference by Soccer Buzz and earned regional recognition. Serafy’s 2006 class was ranked second in the Atlantic Sun by Soccer Buzz.

Not only has Serafy had success on the recruiting trail, but those recruits have turned in all-conference performances. Catie Marshalek was named to the 2004 Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, leading the team in points and goals. Meghan Castaldo followed in Marshalek’s footsteps and led the squad in points, goals and assists while earning A-Sun All-Freshman honors in 2005 along with defender Heather Manting. Castaldo’s play in 2006 earned her a spot on the All-Atlantic Sun First Team while defender Erin Theobald and goalkeeper Jean Worts werenamed to the 2006 A-Sun All-Freshman squad. In 2007, Kacie Hudson became the fi rst Mercer women’s soccer player to earn both First-Team All-Conference and All-Freshman recognition after leading the team in goals and points.

That theme continued in 2008. Olivia Tucker was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year after leading Mercer in goals scored, points and shots. She ranked in the top 10 in seven conference categories. Manting fi nished her distinguished career the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year.

Serafy also emphasizes excellence in the classroom, where 59 players have earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic team honors since his fi rst season, including an amazing 23 selections in 2007. Additionally, Court-ney Maxey earned a spot on the 2006 NSCAA/adidas College Women

Scholar All-South Region Honorable Mention Team, was a fi -nalist for the 2007 Georgia Sportswoman of the Year Award, and was named the 2008 Atlantic Sun Female Student-Athlete of the Year. As a team, the Bears have received the NSCAA Team Academic Award four years under Serafy and seven times in the past eight seasons.

“We seek student-athletes who are talented soccer players, that are strong academically and demonstrate eff ort in the classroom, and that have good character,” said Serafy. “Those are also the qualities we try to emphasize while our players attend Mercer. We want them to have thebest four years of Division I soccer they can have, we want them to gradu-ate in four years with a solid GPA with the degree of their choice, and we want their character to have developed further.”

The fi fth women’s soccer coach in the program’s history, Serafy came to Mercer on March 17, 2004, after spending the previous 16 years at Strat-ford Academy in Macon where he developed both the boys’ and girls’ soc-cer teams into dominant forces, winning a total of 16 state championships.

After taking over the Stratford boys’ soccer program in 1988, Serafy quick-ly built the program into a GISA power, guiding the Eagles to a third-place fi nish in 1989, their highest fi nish ever in the state playoff s. The Eagles fol-lowed up on their success the next season as Serafy guided Stratford to its fi rst state championship. The Eagles would be no stranger to success for the remainder of Serafy’s tenure. Stratford went on to win six more boys’ state championships under Serafy’s leadership and he would fi nish with an overall boys’ record of 215- 64-13.

Serafy’s stay at Stratford was the beginning of one of the most dominant girls’ soccer teams in the state. In that fi rst season, the girls’ team went 10-5-1. Success for the girls’ program continued as the Eagles continued to win state championships throughout the ‘90s. In 1996, Stratford received its fi rst national ranking, coming in 17th in the Umbro/NSCAA girls’ high school Top 20 poll. The 2000 squad was ranked 25th in the Fab-50 rankings by Student Sports Magazine. The undefeated 2002 squad was ranked 17th by that same publication.

Serafy’s nine years of guiding the girls’ soccer program at Stratford resulted in nine consecutive state championships and an overall record of 153-14-4.

Serafy holds a class “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation and a Premier Diploma from the NSCAA, the two highest forms of coach-ing credentials in the country. He has been a staff coach for the Georgia State Soccer Association and a coach for the Georgia Olympic Develop-ment Program.

Originally from Atlanta, Serafy starred at the Westminster Schools, playing on two state championship teams before playing at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., for two seasons. He completed his collegiate career at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in physical education. Serafy earned a master’s degree in sport management from Springfi eld College in Massachusetts and served as a graduate assistant for the men’s program. He is single and resides in Macon.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES A GOOD UNIVERSITY FROM A GREAT UNIVERSITYEXTENDS FAR BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF ITS CURRICULUM AND ITSCAMPUS.

THE COMPETENCE AND CHARACTER OF AN INSTITUTION’S GRADUATES ARE, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, THE HALLMARKS BY WHICH ITS REPUTATION IS BOTH EARNED AND MEASURED.

AS A PRIVATE, CO-EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION, MERCER UNIVERSITY HAS EMERGED AS ONE OF THE PREMIER UNIVERSITIES IN THE SOUTHEAST AND THE NATION.

MERCER IS TRULY A DYNAMIC AND COMPREHENSIVE CENTER OF UNDER-GRADUATE, GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION. MERCER’S OUT-STANDING FACULTY TAKE STUDENTS BEYOND THE RIGORS OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS TO EXPLORE THE CHALLENGES OF REASON, RESPONSIBILITY,COMPASSION AND CHARACTER.

THROUGH LEARNING, LIVING AND LEADING, MERCER STUDENTS ARE PRE-PARED NOT ONLY TO CONFRONT, BUT ALSO TO EMBRACE THE CHALLENGESOF THEIR FUTURE.

UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF PROMINENT GEORGIA BAPTIST LEADER JESSE MERCER, MERCER UNIVERSITY WAS FOUNDED IN PENFIELD, GA., IN 1833 AND LATER MOVED TO MACON IN 1871. FROM ITS HUMBLE BEGINNINGS AS A SMALL LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE, MERCER NOW OFFERS PROGRAMS IN 11 SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES.

CONVENIENTLY LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STATE, MACON SERVES AS THE EDUCATIONAL, MEDICAL, CULTURAL AND COMMERCIAL HUB OF CENTRAL GEORGIA. LOCATED JUST ONE HOUR FROM ATLANTA - ONE OF THE NATION’S MOST POPULAR INTERNATIONAL CITIES - AND TWO HOURS FROM THE ATLANTIC COAST, MACON IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM TWO INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS - I-75 AND I-16.

CONSISTENTLY RANKED BY U.S. NEWS WORLD REPORT AND THE PRINC-ETON REVIEW AMONG THE NATION’S LEADING UNIVERSITIES, MERCER CONSIDERS ONE OF ITS STRENGTHS TO BE ITS SUPERIOR FACULTY, WHO “TEACH FROM THE HEART.” AT MERCER, STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM LEARN-ING EXPERIENCES GUIDED BY CARING FACULTY, NOT TEACHING ASSISTANTS FOUND AT MANY UNIVERSITIES AS IS THE CASE AT MANY UNIVERSITIES. THE HIGHER EDUCATION RESEARCH INSTITUTE AT UCLA RECENTLY NAMED MERCER AS A “HIGHLY SELECTIVE” UNIVERSITY, AND THE PRINCETON REVIEW HAS PLACED MERCER AMONG THE BEST 351 COLLEGES IN NORTH AMERICA.

THE UNIVERSITY IS COMPRISED OF THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS, EUGENE W. STETSON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, TIFT COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, WALTER F. GEORGE SCHOOL OF LAW, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, SOUTHERN SCHOOL OF PHARMACY, JAMES AND CAROLYN MCAFEE SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY, GEORGIA BAPTIST

COLLEGE OF NURSING, TOWNSEND SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND COLLEGE OF CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES. THE UNIVERSITY ALSO OPERATES THE MERCER UNIVERSITY PRESS IN MACON AND THE MERCER ENGINEERING RESEARCH CENTER

IN WARNER ROBINS.MERCER’S ENROLLMENT IS 8,012 STUDENTS. WHILE MANYSTUDENTS COME FROM THE SOUTHEAST, MORE THAN 38 STATES AND 30COUNTRIES ARE REPRESENTED AMONG THE STUDENT BODY. THE AVERAGE CLASS SIZE AT MERCER IS 25, WITH A STUDENT/FACULTY RATIO OF 15:1 - UNUSUALLY LOW FOR A MAJOR UNIVERSITY.

CAMPUS LIFEEVEN WITH ITS PICTURESQUE SETTING, THE SPIRIT OF MERCER IS NOTIN THE GRANDEUR OF ITS BUILDINGS, BUT IN THE GRACIOUSNESS OF ITSPEOPLE - A FRIENDLY, FAMILY-LIKE COMMUNITY OF FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS WHO STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE IN ALL THAT THEY DO.

THE UNIVERSITY OFFERS A WEALTH OF FASCINATING EXPERIENCES AND ACTIVITIES BOTH IN AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. FROM ACADEMIC CLUBS AND HONOR SOCIETIES, TO PERFORMING ARTS AND SPECIAL INTER-EST GROUPS, TO 16 NATIONAL FRATERNITIES AND SORORITIES ON CAMPUS, STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE FROM MORE THAN 80 ON-CAMPUS ORGANIZA-TIONS TO DISCOVER NEW TALENTS AND INTERESTS AND TO GAIN IMPOR-TANT LEADERSHIP SKILLS THEY WILL NEED FOR LIFE AFTER COLLEGE.

RESIDENCE LIFETHE BENEFITS OF CAMPUS LIVING ARE NUMEROUS - THE DEVELOPMENT

OF LIFE-LONG FRIENDSHIPS, A SENSE OF COMMUNITY, ENHANCING CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT AND HIGHER ACADEM-IC PERFORMANCE.

FOR MANY NEW STUDENTS, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE LIVED AWAY FROM HOME, AND THE COM-MUNITY THAT DEVELOPS ON CAMPUS AND IN RESIDENCE HALLS BECOMES A SECOND FAMILY.

ALL FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORES (FIRST-YEAR AND/OR TRANSFER STUDENTS) ARE REQUIRED TO LIVE ON CAMPUS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MARRIED STUDENTS, STUDENTS ABOVE THE AGE OF 21, STUDENTS WITH CHILDREN AND/OR STUDENTS WHO LIVE AT HOME WITH A PARENT OR GUARDIAN WITHIN REASONABLE COMMUTING DISTANCE.

IN EACH OF MERCER’S RESIDENCE HALLS, SAFETY COMES FIRST AND FOREMOST. THE EXTERIOR DOORS ARE LOCKED AT ALL TIMES, AND STUDENTS USE THEIR IDENTIFICATION CARDS TO GAIN ACCESS INTO THEIR RESIDENCE HALL.
