2012 SEASON PREVIEWThe 2012 fall season marks a rebirth for the Mercer volleyball program. For the first time nine years, the team is under new leadership, as Damian Elder takes over the hard-court coaching duties for the first time since being introduced as the program leader in January 2012.

While the sideline leadership may reflect fresh faces, the on-court depth chart is one of the most seasoned in recent memory. Nearly two thirds of the roster is comprised of juniors and seniors, hungry to leave a legacy as leaders of the first Mercer team to win a conference title and go to the NCAA Tournament.

One obvious challenge for Elder and his staff is replacing four departed starters from last year’s team that fin-ished 12-19 (4-9 A-Sun). In their place, Elder’s first recruiting class features four newcomers that have spent the preseason challenging the established players for playing time.

“I was pleasantly surprised when the new players got here,” Elder said. “They integrated themselves emotionally with the team and our philosophy early. They have come in and challenged the returners every day psychically. From day one, they have been doing the conditioning right and executing fantastically on the court.”

In the annual preseason A-Sun Coaches’ poll, the Bears were picked to finish seventh in the 10-team league. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the 2012 volleyball team by position.

MIDDLEBLOCKER

The middle blocking group is a bright spot for Elder his staff, as the Bears return all four players who spent time at the position last season. Vying for the role of starting middle blocker are the senior duo of Jen Katona and Char-layna Braxton, two of A-Sun’s most physically imposing players.

“I’m looking for Jen to have a great season statistically and with Layna as one of our captains, she makes sure the team stays together and she contributes in a very physical way,” Elder said.

Elder’s expectations for Katona fall in line with her efforts last season, when she finished among the top A-Sun players in blocks per set (0.88 – 4th), kills per set (2.38 – 16th), hitting percentage (.248 – 9th), and points per set (3.01 – 13th). Standing at 6-foot-3, Katona commands attention from opponents as one of the six tallest A-Sun players.

Braxton is coming off her most productive season to date, as she put together career-best averages of 1.56 kills and 0.78 blocks per set last year. Mercer fans have come to know her as the team’s sparkplug, as evidenced by her improved averages of 2.07 kills and 1.15 blocks per set in Mercer victories a year ago.

Adding to the mix at the middle blocker position are returning upperclassmen Madison Petsos, Zoe Becton and incoming freshman Jordan Gollon.

“Because of experience, I’m looking for the middle hitting group to play with confidence early on,” Elder said. “Madison and Jordan are pushing in practice every day to get a starting spot. For sure they will get on the court, it’s that close.”

OUTSIDEHITTERS

Among outside hitters, senior Jamie Duffy has distinguished herself as the clear leader of the pack. Over the past

2012 SEASON PREVIEWtwo seasons, Duffy has started 47 matches and enters her senior year fifth among A-Sun active kill lead-ers. As a captain, Elder has noticed her ability to set an example for her younger teammates.

“She’s the most able all around,” El-der said. “She has the experience as well and has been controlling the ball really well in the preseason.”

Returners Codi Schepp and Cassie Roy are joined by newcomer Molly Locke in a battle for the second outside hitter position, a spot that Elder asserts has yet to be solidi-fied. Schepp and Roy have the upper hand in experience - with 289 collegiate sets between the two - but Locke has shown the ability to contribute right away and expects to see significant court time early on.

RIGHTSIDE

On the rightside, Elder has a valuable cache of talent to work with between sophomore Caroline Carlton, junior Lizzie Knapper and sophomore transfer Carter Petsos. Based on last year’s performance, Carlton has shown an explosive athletic ability that places her atop the depth chart at the position, while Knapper provides a strong second option at the spot. Carter Petsos figures to work her way into playing time as she adjusts to the pace of Division I volleyball.

SETTER

At the setter position, Elder returns a proven court leader in Monica Sanchez. Sanchez piled up 504 assists last year, splitting time with the departed Madeline Dolny at setter. Thus far, Sanchez has earned the right to control the offense, while junior Carly Iannarino works her way back into the fold after missing her entire sophomore year with a knee injury.

Once she returns to full strength, Iannarino will provide Elder with a substantial one-two punch at the setter spot. Before missing last season, Iannarino had a stretch of 18-straight double-digit assist matches her freshman year, ultimately finishing that campaign with over 400 helpers.

Freshman Hannah Noon rounds out the setter trio, but will start the season hampered by injury. When she re-turns, Elder believes the Niceville, Florida product will help promote healthy competition at the position.

LIBERO

Mercer’s 2012 fall season also is the first in recent history without an incumbent libero to manage the back line. Despite losing former A-Sun Libero of the Year Charlotte Harris, Elder feels confident with Emily Rochefort assum-ing the role of defensive leader.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW

Rochefort performed admirably in the role of backup last season, ultimately earning three starts on the season. In those moments, the Savannah native showed flashes of brilliance, as evidenced by five double-digit dig matches, in-cluding a career-high 16 dig effort against A-Sun rival Stetson.

SCHEDULE

Three non-conference tournaments and an 18-game conference slate comprise the bulk of the 2012 Mercer volleyball schedule as announced by head coach Damian Elder. Elder’s first season at the helm of the program is set to begin at the Charleston Southern Invitational in Charles-ton, South Carolina. Aside from host Charleston Southern, Mercer will also meet Furman and Canisius as part of the two day event on August 31-September 1. On September 4, the Bears travel to Georgia Southern before heading north to the Georgia State Invitational on September 7-8. In Atlanta, the Orange and Black will play South Alabama, host Georgia State and Samford, the reigning Southern Conference Champions. Mercer’s non-conference schedule concludes with a trip to the Winthrop Classic on September 14-15. Other teams at the event are Winthrop, Western Carolina and North Carolina A&T. On September 18, Mercer’s 18-game conference schedule kicks off as the team hosts East Tennessee State at the University Center. The conference opener marks the start of a five-game homestand that features a program-first matchup with the newest A-Sun member school, Northern Kentucky, on September 28. Other notable A-Sun home matches include a test against the defending A-Sun champions, Lipscomb (Sept. 29), a Senior Night clash with North Florida (Oct. 27) and the home slate finale against in-state rival Kennesaw State (Nov. 8). All told, five of Mercer’s 19 opponents finished the 2011 season with top-150 RPI’s, while three of those (Furman, Samford, Lipscomb) finished last year year among the top-100.

FIRST SEASON AT MERCERFRESNO STATE‘02

head coach DAMIANELDER

Damian Elder was named head coach of the Mercer vol-leyball team on January 17, 2012.

“We are extremely pleased to add Coach Elder to the Mercer family,” Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole said. “He brings over a decade of top-level hardwood coach-ing experience and has proven the ability to build a suc-cessful sand volleyball program. I’m confident we have found the right man to lead our program going forward.” Elder assumes his first head coaching role after spending 11 years as either an assistant or an associate coach in some of the nation’s elite conferences. In three coaching stops prior to Mercer, Elder has coached in the Pacific-12, the Southeastern Conference and the Southern Confer-ence. Most recently, Elder was an assistant at the College of Charleston in 2011. At Charleston, he helped guide the Cougars to a 25-10 (14-2 SoCon) record and a runner-up finish in the 2011 SoCon Championship. Before his stint in Charleston, Elder spent five seasons as the associate head coach at South Carolina. His teams at South Carolina racked up 71 wins over that time, including posting a program-record 21 victories in 2002. During his time at South Carolina, the school fielded its first competitive sand volleyball team. Elder assumed responsi-bility of the sand program, instituting the first sand training program and first SEC sand camp before leading the team to the SEC Beach Championship title in 2009. Elder got his start in Division I volleyball at Stanford, spend-ing two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the Cardinal. In his first season at Stanford, the team captured the 2004 NCAA Division I National Championship. A 2002 graduate of Fresno State, Elder is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Arts in Teaching from The Citadel.

State. In two years at Limestone, Schweihofer was named team MVP twice on his way to finishing as the program’s career leader in aces, kills, attacking attempts and games played. In his senior campaign, he earned the school’s first all-confer-ence selection when he garnered a first-team nod from Conference Carolinas.

While attending Limestone, Schweihofer spent time as the women’s volleyball assistant coach at nearby Presbyterian College, where he helped the program transition from Division II to Division I. As a member of the Blue Hose staff, he was responsible for video editing, game tape exchange, practice planning and scheduling, game strategy and recruiting. Before transferring to Limestone, Schweihofer was a student assistant for the women’s volleyball team at Michigan State. The Mercer Athletics Foundation was created in 2007 as the fund-raising arm for Mercer University Athletics. Since its inception, members of the foundation have contributed over $1.5 million. These funds have been used to undertake such projects as hiring a full-time strength and conditioning coach, enhancing recruiting budgets, providing additional scholarships and to help increase salaries to attract and retain outstanding coaches.

Mission Statement:

2012-13 MAF PresidentJohn W. Collier John graduated from Mercer University in 1966 where he played baseball and was captain his senior year. He received his J.D. in 1971 from the Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University, where he served on Law Review, and is a member of the Georgia and Florida Bar. He is a past member of Mercer Board of Trustees. John has more than 15 years of experience providing wealth management services and over 25 years of experience in the practice of law. After serving as an institutional consultant at Smith Barney, John joined Merrill Lynch in 2007. He is currently an Institutional Money Manager at Merrill Lynch.

Message from the MAF President:“It’s a great time to ‘Be the Bear’ as a part of the Mercer University athletics family! There are many exciting things currently going on in Bears Athletics...with even more on the horizon!

The experiences I gained as a Mercer student and athlete have proven invaluable in both my personal and professional life. Mercer offers its students an education - both on and off the field - that is as functional as it is respect-ed in today’s world. A Mercer degree tells people that you have been a part of some-thing special.

The Mercer Athletic Foundation’s goal is to enhance and grow the ‘athletic experience’ for the student-athletes who follow in the footsteps of those who, like myself, were fortunate enough to represent the Orange & Black in intercollegiate athletics com-petition. Your gifts and contributions to the MAF are what make it possible for this to happen, so please consider how you can ‘Be the Bear’ today!”

Strength and ConditioningThe strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport.

Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to assist Mercer’s approximately 226 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through strength training and conditioning.

Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following:• three top of the line power lift full racks• over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines• three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • five free standing adjustable benches

Sports Medicine DepartmentThe Mission of the Sports Medicine Department is to provide quality comprehensive healthcare to student-athletes. The health and well-being of student-athletes is the number one priority. Student-athletes have access to therapeutic services such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation, nutritional counseling and preventative physical medicine.

The Mercer Sports Medicine department utilizes a state-of-the-art athletic training facility in the university center. The athletic training room consists of a treatment, taping and rehabilitation area. The rehabilitation area is equipped with a treadmill, exercise bikes in addition to a variety of weights, resistance bands, medicine balls, and other rehabilitation equipment which can be used to facilitate injury rehabilitations.

The athletic training area also has an enclosed hydrotherapy room with an eight-person cold whirlpool and smaller extremity whirlpools. There are also offices for the staff and a physician exam room. The athletic training room also has easy access to the weight room and the University Center pool.

The facility is staffed by two full-time certified athletic trainers and six graduate assistant certified athletic trainers, a family practice physician and an orthopedic surgeon. The staff works with other group of health-care providers to bring a comprehensive care to the student-athletes and acts as a liaison with nutritionists, dentist, cardiologists, and many other specialists.
