M1, ROGER MUL L IN
I participated in a two week long international building workshop on the island of Sandhornøy in Norway for the purpose of designing and constructing small scale accommodation. The workshop (lead by Joar Nango , Sami Rintala and Roger Mullin) was inspired by Arctic nomadic construction methods, designed for a life in the extreme climate. A celebration of creative, historical, environmental and communal culture through art, music, food and architecture.

SKYBOUND provides accommodation for the SALT festival. The structure is a response to the concept of nomadism, a building that looks as if it could literally walk across the landscape. Once positioned inside the dwelling the intent was that the inhabitant could focus on the mountains behind and the sea in front. There is space to sleep and space to congregate.

The proposed School of Music for Dalhousie University attempts to emphasize the boundaries between performance space, learning, and informal social interaction. Three forms connected only by structural bridges and large trusses enable you to consider circulation and the threshold between spaces. Through experiencing planes of transparency, translucency, and opacity, visual connections can be made between forms, levels, programs and students.

HOUSINGDARTMOUTH
M2, IN PROGRESS
Design development for high-density, mixed-use housing on the Dartmouth waterfront, across the harbour from Halifax. Currently Dartmouth’s waterfront is underdeveloped, and under used. As a studio of twelve students, we designed a new urban plan for the downtown and proposed housing to revitalize the area. The focus in the initial phase was on urban systems and housing and social systems.

B2 , BR I AN MACKAY- LYONS
A semester long study of the fundamental human rituals of dwelling. Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site was the location for a proposed dwelling with a commercial component integrated into the design. The project addressed issues of urbanity, scale, topography, material, culture and heritage. Below is a response to these design challenges - a house and restaurant situated on the town square of Lunenburg.

VOLUNTEER BUILD GRAVENHURST, ONTAR IO
DQ I
Volunteer Builders is an organization that provides a unique service to camps in northern Ontario by designing and building a needed facility on their site. Scarborough Outdoor Education School was in need of more cabins for their program. In collaboration with Jonathan Sprawson I contributed to a design proposal, construction drawings and model. The site offered an opportunity to bring the outdoors into the physical space and provided inner-city students the opportunity to experience nature even within the indoors.

After closely studying the Computer Science Building on the Dalhousie campus for several weeks, myself and Lauren McCrimmon developed a pavilion design that supports and improves the urban character of the site. The proposed pavilion is a tunnel like structure that provides an additional threshold as well as a gathering space for students.

HOLLIS YOUTH THEATREHAL I FAX , NS
b3 , p e t er henry
A semester long study of the theatre. The project objective was to design a small theatre building for a company whose mandate is to serve the people within its community. Contemporary theatre buildings can be a technologically sophisticated and socially important building type with complex programming and integral design details in such things as acoustics, lighting, and circulation.

A semester long exploration of a chosen piece of produce from the grocery store. Throughout the term I abstracted its formal qualities using different mediums and representational tools. The final result was an abstracted form that became a physical form resembling a building.

Sacred Space Grand parade , Ha l i fax
M1, ROGER MUL L INA semester spent exploring the idea of urban sacred space. The intervention is sited at the civic, religious and political centre of Halifax. Through architecture the proposed design is meant to encourage opportunity to pause, contemplate, reflect, search and seek. It is a space that welcomes and affirms all faiths, beliefs and thoughts.
Most of the exploration and representation took the form of stop-motion video. Select the links below to see.
