The Merritt Civic Centre was the set-ting for a colourful
ceremony Wednes-day, to celebrate the signing of the
schooldistrict's second Aboriginal EducationEnhancement Agreement
(AEEA).
AEEAs are 5-year agreements to en-hance the education of
Aboriginal learn-ers through programs and actions thatpromote
academic success, positive self-esteem and cultural awareness. The
sec-
ond Nicola-Similkameen School District58 AEEA was developed over
a 2-yearperiod through the efforts of all partnerrepresentatives,
parents, elders, andcommunity members at large.
Much progress has been made sincethe first Agreement was signed.
Last Sep-tember, the Aboriginal House of Honourwas officially
opened in the courtyard ofMerritt Secondary School. This is the
firstAboriginal Academy in BC, and studentsare taught Grade 9
science, social studies,language arts, and fine arts using
materialthat is culturally responsive. For example,science covers
topics like which plants areedible and have medicinal
properties,how the seasons and moon cycles affectnature, and
environmental stewardship.
SD 58 is located in the traditional territoryof the Coldwater
Band, Lower Nicola Band,
Nooaitch Band, Shackan Band, UpperNicola Band & Upper
Similkameen Band.More than 40% of the total number of stu-dents in
the district identify as Aboriginal.
