Annual cemeteryclean up
The City works crew will be com-mencing the annual cemetery clean upfrom May 5-9. Any offerings or memora-bilia that are placed on headstones willbe removed and placed at the Pine ridgeCemetery shed. Memorabilia only willremain at the Cemetery shed for 30 daysthen the items will be disposed of accordingly.

2014 City budgetThe City of Merritt’s operating & cap-
ital budget for 2014 is $20 million —$13.5 million to operate all departments& $6.5 million for capital expenses.
But between cost increases ($80,000for labour; $200,000 for the rCMP;$30,000 in electricity costs) and a loss oftax revenue ($30,000 due to reduction inassessed values & the loss of major in-dustry, ie. Ardew), there is an increase of$451,000 in uncontrollable costs.
The tax increase to cover that wouldhave been 7%, enough to spark a residentrevolt! But at the next meeting, CityCouncil will approve a 2% increase,which will bring an additional $130,000in revenue. And to keep this budget bal-ance, all departments are working to re-duce their costs by $200,000, and $500,000will be taken out of reserve funds.
A quick look at the earliest budgetarchived on the City’s website —2007 —shows $8.2 in expenditures & $14 millionin revenues, for an annual surplus of $5.8million. Those were the days…

This will be mostappealing to a student in a tourism or recreation / leisure servicesprogram of study although that is not a job pre-requisite.
