Message from the Commander Fellow Legionnaires, As of November 17, we have recruited 1550 new members to our organization. Although admittedly not having the statistics in front of me, I do not believe we have lost 1550 brothers and sisters to Post Everlasting or geographical moves from Texas. A key component of our quest to achieve our goal has been and is, renewing the members we have. Let’s make that a priority. At least six District Commanders have shared efforts they are making to open new Posts in their respective districts. We hope others are doing the same and will be sharing that information with the Division Commanders and our Vice Commander. It would make our efforts more effective if District Commanders would reach out to their Division Commanders and the Department Vice Commander more frequently, just as Department Commanders reach out to the National Vice Commander to give him an update on what’s going on. It’s okay to call the people that serve our organization and you. Remember, service flows down and support is mutual. As you might know, we missed our 65% target date by seven days. On November 10 we were at 63.36%. Seven days later, on November 17, we were at 65.49%. Considering the obstacles, we faced from Harvey (the hurricane, not the Chaplain), we should remain confident in our ability to meet our goal. Message from the Commander

Fellow Legionnaires,

As of November 17, we have recruited 1550 new members to our organization.

Keep faith in your fellow Legionnaires, and more importantly, keep faith in yourself.

HINTS from HINCE

Veteran’s Day came and went and once again, Texas came thru for us veterans. Cannot begin to share all the activities that took place across the state but we have included a few to be shared.

School speeches, parades and flag distribution were just a few of the happenings that took place around 11 November.

Please remember to get your pieces in to me between the 15th and the 20th so I can include in the Legion Times. Have to have the ok to use pictures from the folks involved. If you want me to write the article, get me the facts and I will write it up for your approval.

HINTS FROM HINCE: Mary Lang of Wylie does a great job sharing information. She can be reached at [email protected]

District Oratorical contests are going to be taking place this month and hopefully, we will see many competitors at Division and at State level. Our recent entries has done us proud and the scholarships have made a difference in some college plans.

Barbara Hemmer of Brenham is once again Chair of the state oratorical program. That State competition will take place on President’s Day 19 February at Post 159 in Bryan.

HINTS FROM HINCE: The number of students competing is really dropping in the state of Texas. Plan early in the Legion year to hit all schools and home school associations to get more involved. Barbara Hemmer is at [email protected] for more information.

A few tips about the wearing of the Legion uniform. As we all know, the cap is the uniform.

A Legion baseball cap or a baseball cap featuring your service does not meet the requirements for a Legion cover hat can be worn in Legion meetings.

HINTS FROM HINCE: The Legion cap is not to be worn perched on the back of the head. This is a technique that is used by female Legionnaires especially to allow for bangs or specific coifs! The same rules apply to Legion caps as service caps…they could not be perched either!

Many Posts will take part in Christmas parades and dinners this season. It is an opportunity to once again show the colors and bring the message to the front.

HINTS FROM HINCE: Involve all the Legion Family in Christmas activities.

Take lots of pictures and let’s bury the National Commander with Texas takes on her Family First motto! - Gerry Hince

It’s a story that many have heard before: On a crisp, clear morning in 1914 during WW I, thousands of British, Belgian and French soldiers put down their rifles, stepped out of their trenches and spent Christmas mingling with their German enemies along the Western front.

Hostilities continued in some sectors, others resumed fighting later. But for that brief moment in history, the event captured the minds and hearts of millions all over the world. It was the stuff dreams are made of, a sign of “hope and humanity.” Yet, 27 years later, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor without warning or provocation, leading to our entry into WW II – also in the month of December.

A Pastor friend of mine urges her parishioners to pray for World Peace. I point out that has been prayed for many centuries and doesn’t seem to have made a difference. In fact if anything, the bloodshed seems to have worsen. World Peace is a collective concept, somewhat nebulous, and holds no one responsible or accountable for achieving it. But there is an approach that’s more likely to be fruitful – and you have absolute control over it.

The idea is expressed in St. Francis’ prayer, “Make me an instrument of your peace.” Preah Maha Ghosananda, a highly revered Cambodian Buddhist monk, once wrote:

A peaceful heart makes a peaceful person.A peaceful person makes a peaceful family.A peaceful family makes a peaceful community.A peaceful community makes a peaceful nation.A peaceful nation makes a peaceful world.

But how does one go about achieving a “peaceful heart,” especially when, despite how open, peaceful and loving you attempt to be, people can only meet you as deeply as they’ve meet themselves? On this subject, books have been written, but let me help you with the first step: One needs to want a peaceful heart in the first place.

With this month of Advent, Christmas and Hanukkah upon us, let us dedicate our lives to not only live with others in peace, but to live with ourselves in peace as well. Here are a few of my favorite quotes on the subject. I pray that they will bring a blessing in your life as they have in mine. “Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” ― Gautama Buddha

“Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be real must be unaffected by outside cir-cumstances.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

“Nobody can hurt me without my permission.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

“Nothing can disturb your peace of mind unless you allow it to.” ― Roy T. Bennett,

“Never allow someone else’s anger to become your anger” - Harvey H. Klee (thought I’d throw in one of my own)

“We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” ― Dalai Lama XIV

Along with my Christmas prayer for the health and happiness of The American Legion Family, I wish you all Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

On Saturday November 11th the members of Royse City Post 100 participated in their local Veteran’s Day event. This year the post conducted a Youth Art Contest. The post received $640 in prizes donated by local busi-nesses. There were three schools that participated and turned in a total of 191 pieces of art thanking veterans for their service. 15 winners from the local elementary students were in attendance and were recognized for their participation in the event. The post also presented the Certificate of Military Commitment to Esmeralda Cienfuegos for her decision to join the Army. Esmeralda is a 2017 graduate of Royse City High School who will be leaving for basic training on the 20th of November. Part of the celebration also included the post receiving a proclamation from the mayor. The post also took this opportunity to recruit and they were able to get one new member, a paid post transfer, a renewal and a few 345 member transfers. “We love our town and our town loves us.” said Post Commander Jason Castleberry

City officials are excited to share that the 501c3 Missouri City Parks Foundation is moving forward with its first strategic priority, the future Veterans Memorial slated for construction in the City Hall Complex. “We are thankful that the Parks Foundation saw fit to allow the Veterans Memorial to be the signature and kickoff project for our City Hall place-making initiative. Efforts are under way now to engage private citizens, foundations and corporate partners to help us achieve our $1.5 million dollar goal,” said City Manager Anthony J. Snipes. “The venture will be done in two phases and each will have a project cost of $750,000. Our goal is to complete fundraising by June, 2018.” For sponsorship details, view this MCPF website link: http://bit.ly/2iJQ256 or call 281.403.8500. Adrienne Barker, President of the Parks Foundation Board and Director/Chief Development Officer of the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land, said “members are pleased to undertake this funding campaign for the Veterans Memorial project. Not only will it honor those who have served our country so valiantly, but also become a key artistic focal point of the City Hall placemaking project. In recent years, City officials and staff selected an innovative Veterans Memorial design by Lloyd Lentz, a Principal with LMA Design Houston and the son of a World War II and Korean War Veteran, the grandson of two World War I veterans and the brother of a Vietnam Veteran. Mr. Lentz’s concept honors America’s brave soldiers who have valiantly served our country, and it features a five-point star with an eternal flame and fountain in its center and is surrounded by arched columns. The diagram below provides a comprehensive overview of the initiative.

The timeless design represents the flow of life through the bubbling fountain and the flame of freedom burning eternally. It also symbolizes the bravery, sacrifice and strength veterans stand for in this country.

District B Councilmember Don Smith, who is Chair of City Council’s Veterans Committee, spearheaded the project. “Regardless of whether you’re involved in the military during peace time or you go into hostile conditions, you are a changed person,” Councilmember Smith said. “This project is so important because it honors a segment of the population that has given so much to this country. This memorial is our way of letting these service men and women know how much we appreciate what they’ve done for the country.” The final memorial design will include:Landscape, sculpture, lighting and architectural and artistic design elements; Space and infrastructure that will accommodate parking, sound systems, podium placement, power and an area with chairs and standing room for guests; and Eco-friendly materials that are “native” to Texas and that can withstand inclement weather conditions and have limited maintenance and repair requirements “The construction will honor veterans from the past, present and future and create a permanent tribute to the courageous men and women who protect and serve our great Nation,” Snipes said. As part of its education and engagement outreach, MCPF is partnering with the local American Legion Post 294 to promote state and national recognition and to raise funds for the project. “I have been involved with memorials in the past and have worked with city, county and state personnel in bringing Veterans projects to fruition. Working with Missouri City personnel has been a very rewarding experience in that you literally take the motto ‘Show Me’ to heart and make honest efforts to interface with the public in seeing and transforming dreams into reality,” said Historian Dennis Thibault, who served in the Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division in a Recon Group and was an active Jumpmaster of various aircraft. “I will do what I am capable of in promoting this signature project and take advantage of the Centennial’s timeline in promoting our Veterans project on a State and National level,” he added, explaining that the American Legion is marking its first century of service with the celebration of its 100th anniversary milestone at the 2019 national convention in Indianapolis, Ind. Thibault, who is also Centennial Chair for Post 294 and a Legion member for more than 50 years, further emphasized the significance of the MCPF-American Legion partnership, saying: “by working with City personnel on the veterans memorial, we have the opportunity to enhance local veteran status and foster a feeling of community support for all veterans, past, present and future. The Parks Foundation and American Legion partnership is an example to others of how city government and citizens can work together for the betterment of our community.” For more information about Missouri City, please watch the City website: www.missouricitytx.gov, like us on Facebook—fb/MissouriCityTX, follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat—@MissouriCityTX and watch Missouri City Television (Ch. 16 on Comcast and Ch. 99 on AT&T U-verse).

Post 379 Celebrates Its Golden AnniversaryOn Thursday, 02 March 2017, Post 379 celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Prior to the event, post members made public announcements and hung banners along the street in front of the post building informing the surrounding community of the upcoming event. A free meal was serve to all attendees from 5pm to 7pm which included smoked chicken, sausage, several sides and several desserts provided by members of the Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion, and the American Legion Riders.

Sometime during October 1963, the superintendent of the Bedford School System, Omar Carrothers, began reaching out to other community veterans to meet with him to discuss the possibility of chartering an American Legion Post. On 21 August 1964, Omar along with nineteen other future post members met again at Stonegate Elementary School in Bedford to discuss how to make the newly conceived post come to life. On 01 October 1964, the post received its Temporary Charter and began having its general membership meetings at the Bedford Boys Ranch activity center. In 1966, post members began renting a building on Highway 10 in Hurst and on 02 March 1967, Hurst Euless Bedford Post 379 received its Permanent Charter, electing Omar as the commander and William Upton as the adjutant. On 27 March 1969, Post 379 received its Certificate of Incorporation from the Texas Secretary of State, on 27 November 1969, the Constitution and By-laws were approved by the Department of Texas and also in 1969, post members purchased a building located at 336 W. Hurst Boulevard in Hurst, across from the Kelly-Moore paint factory. On 26 May 1969, Post 379 began its annual Memorial Day Services at Bluebonnet Hills Cemetery in Colleyville with VFW Post 4695 out of Hurst joining the services on 29 May 1972. This event continues to this day. During the late 1970’s, the post acquired property at its current location and began

construction on a new building in 1982. In the August 1984 issue of ‘The American Legion’ magazine, 379 was recognized as the post of the month.

The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 379 was chartered on 25 May 1983, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 379 was chartered on 16 October 1986, and the Post 379 chapter of the American Legion Riders was formed in 2009. On 04 June 2009, Deborah McKee was voted in as the first female commander for Post 379 and the second female Post Commander in the Department of Texas, being elected only three weeks after the first female Post Commander in the Department was elected. Post 379 and Squadron 379 are both the second largest in their respective categories in the Department and Detachment of Texas while Unit 379 is the largest in the Department. VETERANS RECEIVE FINAL SALUTEFORT WORTH, Texas – Legionnaires joined several other veteran service organizations from across North Central Texas – to include the VFW, Marine Corps League, Military Order of the World Wars and the Patriot Guard riders – for a final salute to veterans at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery November 19. None of those in attendance had a personal connection to the 28 souls – from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard – being interned. Rather, they offered a moment of reverence to fellow veterans who’d previously donated their bodies to science and now sought a final resting place. University of North Texas Health Science Department, working with the National Cemetery Administration, arranged the service as a tribute to those who’d not only served their country, but medicine as well. Health Science officials noted the veterans’ cadavers were critically helpful in training future doctors. As part of the memorial effort, a joint-service flag detail solemnly folded the National Colors and presented them to four Armed Forces representatives. A prayer was said, Taps sounded and a 21-gun volley echoed over the cemetery’s rolling hills. The brief, but somber ceremony complete, attendees quietly departed… Lest we ever forget. Submitted by Bruce ZielsdorfTexas American Legion Post 626 [email protected]
