Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I hope you have heard, L.A. Lutheran and First Lutheran- San Fer-nando, have been working diligently on our merger and the joining of our Lutheran elementary schools. I am excited to share with you the progress being made on the Concordia Schools venture.
At this juncture, preliminary agreements have been made to bring three of our Lutheran ele-mentary schools into the Concordia system. The combined student body on all of our San Fernando Valley campuses (K-12) is about 500 students. We are enthusiastic and optimistic at the potential growth such a venture represents. This new venture will provide for an exciting and vibrant Lu-theran Christian school system, serving students from Kindergar-ten through grade 12 on multiple campuses throughout the San Fernando Valley. The unification of our schools will enrich our current programs and expand offerings for our students.

Welcome, Melissa Chaddick
Mrs. Kimberly Notch was born and raised in Southern California, and gradu-ated from Agoura High School. During that time her activi-ties included horseback riding and volleyball, while at the same time managing two stores for Hot Dog on a Stick. Little did she know that her path would take her into interpreting for the Deaf and teaching. When she entered college, she de-cided to become a teacher and needed a foreign language to complete her credits. Kimberly chose American Sign Lan-guage and that opened the door to a whole new world and a whole new passion. She completed the highly acclaimed pro-gram for interpreting at Pierce College and graduated with a
double associate of art degree. That was followed by completing her bachelors of art degree at Union Institute and University.
Kimberly has been an interpreter for the past eight years, having worked at William S. Hart School District, College of the Canyons, Oxnard College and Real Life Church. Along with interpreting she has taught all age groups from infants to the elderly. “This year’s new adventure at L.A. Lutheran has proven to be both challenging and enjoyable,” Kimberly says, “The students in my class are committed to learning more and more each day which makes our time to-gether a lot of fun.” Outside of school Kimberly is the mother of two boys age six and four and the wife of a very dedicated husband and father. Her family lives in Agua Dulce on a mini ranch where they enjoy riding their two horses and playing with their
Mrs. Melissa Chaddick was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. She spent her high school years in Santa Clarita, California where she graduated from Hart High School.
Excited for her college adventure to begin, she attended Con-cordia University in Irvine and received her bachelors de-gree in History with a minor in Political Science.
During this time, she was involved in activities around cam-pus including outreach, inreach, and student activities. In addition to this, she became a Peer Advising Leader helping both transfer students and new fresh-men adjust to their new college life. Melissa was a Resident Assistant her senior year.
It was during this time that Melissa realized her passion for teaching others - helping others think critically about the world around them and expand their knowledge.
After graduating from Concordia, Melissa attended California State University Northridge and received her teaching credential. After receiving her teaching credential, she worked as a substitute in the William S. Hart District before making Los Angeles Lutheran her home! “I am truly enjoying my time here at LAL,” Melissa said, “I’m so glad I’ve gotten the opportunity to teach at this won-derful school.”
Outside of school, Melissa enjoys spending time with her husband, who she mar-ried this past summer. You can often find her curled up with a good book or bak-ing/cooking a new dish. She strives to bring about justice and peace in all she does.
Welcome, Kimberly Notch

dogs. In conjunction with her teaching assignment at L.A. Lutheran, she is also the Pre-K teacher at Bethlehem Lutheran Preschool in Canyon Country.
Music Department Fall Concert
The very popular Fall Con-cert featured the music of the season: Halloween, Reformation, and Autumn. The audience was treated to music from four L.A. Lutheran musical groups: The Jazzman Band, The Concert Choir, The Pride Concert Band and the L.A. Lutheran String Chamber Orchestra.
Excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Spider-Man, Nightmare Before Christmas, music from Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion (as well as other amuse-ment parks), music of J. S. Bach and Bela Bartok, were performed.

The full student body will soon be receiving the logo renderings from our graphic artist in order to vote on the Cougar logo to represent Concordia Jr/Sr High. Our combined staff/faculty are well into planning for next year and beyond. De-partment heads have been selected and they are working with their Depart-ments to prepare effective subject matter programs that are commensurate with the excellence families have come to expect from Lutheran schools.
Construction of our new 52,000 square foot facility is well underway. After the completion of the expansive floor slab, block walls were constructed for the sec-tions underneath the two-story areas. Steel has been installed to support the flooring for the second floor areas. Just recently, on January 10, 2011, five 18-wheel trucks delivered the framework and roof support steel! The next few months will be very exciting times. The full student body (all students of both L.A. Lutheran and First Lutheran) will come together for a “holy graffiti” event to write blessings, well wishes, and scripture citations on the structural steel before it is installed.
As a part of the planning to fund this ambitious project, the Association (established in 1943) has launched the Partnership in Ministry Capital Cam-paign. This campaign will involve our Association congregations, providing an opportunity for individuals to give to the projects of each congregation, as well as the Concordia project. The first of three congregational “clusters” in this campaign was launched on Saturday, January 15, 2011. This will be a tremen-dous blessing to both the Concordia Schools and participating congregations. Please continue to raise the Concordia venture up in prayer, and consider ways you can make a contribution to its success.
In Christ, Edward Amey Executive Director Lutheran High School Association of Southern California

LA Lutheran is eligible for Thrivent Choice Dollars. Our unique ID # is 502264864
Last year, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans provided more than $100 million to help con-
gregations, communities and individuals in need. The Thrivent ChoiceSM program offers
two ways members can recommend where Thrivent Financial distributes some of its
charitable outreach funds. Some members can participate in both, based on eligibility. Choice DollarsSM Eligible members are designated Choice Dollars, based on insurance premi-ums, contract values and Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership. Choice Dol-lars can be directed to Lutheran organizations you prefer nationwide, including your local Lutheran congregation. If you are eligible to direct Choice Dollars, you will receive a letter in the mail at the point you become eligible. If you are unsure of your eligibility, review the eligibility requirements, login or register to view your eligibility and Choice Dollars.
Voting Events All members 16 and older can vote during specific Voting Events to help deter-mine where Thrivent Financial distributes $1 million among Lutheran and non-Lutheran charitable organizations.

Lines about Lions . . . . Alumni update from Wayne R. Olson ‘63 Since graduating from LHS in 1963 I received an A.S. from LA Trade Tech and B.A. & M.A. at CSULB. I worked as a mechanic for a couple of years, then became a fire equipment mechanic for L.A. City and County Fire De-partments for the next 10 years while I pursued higher education. I started teaching fire science part time while working for the fire department and then changed careers to education for the next 31 years starting as and instructor at
Santa Ana College, 4 years at El Camino College and ending as a division dean at Golden West College in Huntington Beach where I now live. Over the year I participated in many professional organizations rising to office and board positions inmost of them. I am still ac-tive on technical committees for California Skills USA and the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition. I am married to Jan, a police officer at El Camino College. We got married in 2006 at Emer-ald Bay in Lake Tahoe aboard the Tahoe Gal. I have a 40 year old son, Bud from a previous 30 year marriage. Jan and I love to spend time at our mountain home in Big Bear Lake as often as time allows. We have strong close-knit friendship group that we party with, go camping and other activities.
A funny little story for my old Lu-Hi friends... I have a recurring nightmare in which I’m back in high school at the old Mis-sion Hills campus, stuck in a hot classroom at an old metal desk. Mr. Ludtke is teaching the lesson and I’m to take notes. Yet...I TRY to convince Mr. Ludtke that I’m really a 30-ish woman now with a master’s degree and that I shouldn’t have to take notes or do the assignment. His (exasperated) response to me is to “just do it!” or put my head down on my desk (sooo NOT Mr. Ludtke-like, right?). Tonight, in REAL life, I go to the new Lu-Hi campus to participate in a bone marrow and blood drive. After I stood up from given blood, I casually mention that I feel a tinge of nausea. Next thing I know, a phlebotomist sits me in a chair and tells me to stop talking and put my head down on the table! Looking around the inside of the awesome new campus, I sense a flashback to my nightmare and think, “Oh my gosh – I feel like I’m in 10th grade all over again.” Too crazy, right??? A Message from Paul Gauer, I attended LHS from 1958 to 1960. I really enjoyed my experiences at LHS, playing on the football team, running track and playing in the band. Gene Oet-ting and Donald Toebel were two of my favorite teachers. I know Gene Oetting later taught at and retired from Concor-dia College (Neb) where I graduated from in 1965. I have lost track of Donald Toebel. Due to a family situation I was forced to transfer to a boarding school in Nebraska for my senior year. I have very fond memories of my years at LHS and even though I was unable to graduate for LHS I still consider myself a member of the class of 1961. I was wondering if there are any plans for a reunion of the class of 1961? I would appreciate any informa-tion you might have on the possibility of a reunion in the future. Paul H. Grauer - [email protected]
If anyone who receives this newsletter has information for Paul please contact him and include him in your planning. Paul currently lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.
