2017 SNHSA Jumper Cup Challenge Tournament

1st annual SNHSA Jumper Challenge Cup Tournament Oct. 22, 2017 @ Brownlee Equestrian!

The first annual SNHSA JR/AM Jumper Challenge Cup Tournament took

place Sunday, Oct. 22, at Brownlee Equestrian! Thank you to the riders who competed, trainers who supported their students, parents, family and friends who came, and volunteers who helped make the day a fun, exciting day! Special thanks to Sue Leep for judging at the last minute, saving the day since the planned judge was dealing with the Sonoma fire!

The Prix de Nations style team competition featured five three-rider teams for its inaugural event. Riders rode in a warmup round, then competed in Round 1 with order of go drawn. The rider's score having the most faults and slowest time was dropped, and the team's other riders' total points, counting faults and speed, determined order of go for Round 2.

Following the results of Round 2, three teams had no faults in Round 1 and 2, and the chef d'equipe of each team chose the jump-off round rider who rode for final ribbon placement. The fastest rider with no faults was Chanlee Harvey on Anything But Ordinary, earning a first place finish for the Champions, Three of a Kind, with Jenna Rowan on Boomtown and Lexi Conrow on Cantabria completing the team.

Tiffany McCormack on Cassuer de Prix brought in a close score for a Reserve Champion finish for We BE Fast. McCormack was also the third team's rider on Exceptional, earning third place for the Safari Club team. Nevada Equestrian

earned fourth place ribbons and One Horse, Two Horse, Red Horse, Blue Horse was fifth.

A Trailer Date for Contigo & Kjartan by Allison Brunelli

In Kjartan's final trailer loading lesson of the summer, I loaded him with my older horse,

Contigo, in my trailer. From the start of the summer, this was my ultimate goal. As the weeks leading up to this sixth and

final lesson approached, I thought about the challenge. It was not just about teaching Kjartan to load and unload calmly

and confidently in and out of a small confined area like it had been in prior lessons. This time it was about teaching him to

respect the horse standing closely next to him.

Before our lesson, our trainer from Breakaway Farms, Ashlin Bowen, said most baby horses feel more secure when

loading with older horses. She expected the lesson to go well. But she also said it would depend upon their relationship

and that some horses kick others during trailering. In the back of my mind I thought the lesson could have gone either way,

like his past lessons did. Do you remember in one of my previous articles how Kjartan pawed with such force that he

brought the rubber lining to a limp heap on the trailer floor? Do you remember how, in another lesson, he loaded, stood

still, tied and unloaded like a valedictorian?

At two and a half years old, still very much a baby, Kjartan can only give his best when we are at our best supporting

him. Many times all we need to do to support a horse is to give him plenty of preparation because preparation can make

perfect.

As I walked Kjartan up to the trailer and handed him to Ashlin, then went to get

Contigo, I reminded myself of the goal: Load Contigo. Load Kjartan. Take a drive around

the property. Unload Contigo. Unload Kjartan. Remain calm and confident. No one kick. No

one spar. No one harm.

Because I had done the necessary preparation leading up to the lesson, I felt pretty

confident it would go well. I had prepared Kjartan and Contigo by letting them spend time

next to each other in the pipe corrals in the weeks prior. I let them rub noses, measure each

other up, determine who was the better leader. I felt this kind of relationship-building would

likely prevent a dramatic cross-examination in the trailer.

In their first pipe corral engagement, when Kjartan stretched his neck over the pipe to

reach out to Contigo. Contigo addressed him with his "watch yourself, Kjartan," stallion-like

posture and he struck out at him, quickly establishing his leadership stature. In subsequent

Kjartan and Contigo

pipe engagements, Kjartan never tried to rival that. Later, as they spent more time together, I found them licking and

scratching each other.

The final trailer loading lesson went just as I had hoped. We loaded them side by side. We took a drive. We unloaded

them. Ashlin helped me with loading and unloading technique and safety. Kjartan was full of energy but well-behaved. He

followed Contigo's lead, who ended up being less excited and more nonchalant than Kjartan, as if he was slightly bored.

Goal achieved: Kjartan rode side by side with Contigo in my trailer. He was well behaved and no one kicked and no one

was harmed.

Thank you for enjoying these articles written by Allison Brunelli about her trailer loading lessons with Kjartan and Ashlin. She is an avid equestrian, hairstylist, and the founder of StretchEquine.com where she helps bring awareness and prevention of Kissing Spines to equestrian communities by pointing out the importance of riding round.

Julie Winkel and Maplewood Stables held their 40th Anniversary Open House, which

took place on Sunday, Oct. 29. The vent attracted more than 40 attendees who enjoyed stable tours, refreshments, a hay ride tour of the facility, pony rides, a presentation of the 2017 foals

and a costumed jumping demonstration by "the Knight in Shining Armor" (Julie Winkel) aboard the resident breeding stallion Osilvis.

"We were thrilled to celebrate our 40th anniversary

and invite our friends and neighbors to join us for this momentous occasion," said Julie. "Not many businesses

are able to achieve this milestone, and I thank all of our many supporters over the decades for helping us to

remain a successful training, showing, breeding and educational facility here in Nevada."

Maplewood Stables, Inc., was established in 1977, and since then Julie has been committed to

training, showing and breeding champion hunters, jumpers and equitation horses in Reno, Nevada.

Maplewood's horses and riders compete throughout the United States, and internationally

in Canada and Mexico.

Maplewood also congratulates Kevin Winkel on his new job as head trainer and rider at

Silver Spring Farm in Ashland, OR. We will miss Kevin at Maplewood but look forward to seeing him at horse shows and cheering him on while he

competes a string of horses for Silver Spring Farm! Maplewood is also proud to announce that Outlander (Osilvis-Diane) was the site champion

and awarded Premium status during our 14th annual Westfalen NA/RPSI Inspection held Sept. 25.

Julie has also been busy teaching clinics from coast to coast in October. She taught for Kelly

Maddox Training Inc., at the Shiloh West Equestrian Center in Castro Valley, CA, as well as for Mary Donavan during a USHJA Trainer Certification Program Clinic in Pittsburgh, PA, and for

Kimber and Lauren DiTallo during a clinic at High Finance Farm in Chicago, IL. Maplewood riders and horses also competed in the Halloween Novice Fun Show on Oct. 28,

which featured an entertaining and competitive costume class! We are now looking forward to our Turkey Fun Show, to be held Nov. 25, and the First Responders Horse Handling & Safety
