Messages From Your Principal
Helping Children To Learn Well Term 3 Week 6 2014
Dear Parents and Friends of Albion Park Rail Public School
I hope everyone survived the wild weather we have experienced in the Illawarra over the past week. We
did need the rain, but enough is enough. It has played havoc with some of our events, but as always the
show must go on.
We have been celebrating Book Week 2014 at Albion Park Rail Public School this week. We
enthusiastically encourage all students to have a love of reading and stay connected with the world! A
week filled with fun events has taken place.
Congratulations to all those wonderful book characters we saw in our whole school Book Character
Parade on Wednesday. Thank you to the parents, carers and family members who came along to
support their children and spent many hours creating a wonderful spectacle. A special thank you to our
Teacher/Librarian, Helen Murray for organising a jam packed Book Week. I know many students
enjoyed the Cartoon Workshop by Tony Murphy, buying a book from the great selection at the book
fair and joining in the Grandparent Reading Session, not to mention the special movie opportunity.
Over the next few weeks our school grounds will have some environmental additions. The chook run
has started, the recycling compost heap is in place and we are in the process of ‘planting’ our family
story poles. Thank you to all staff involved, particularly Glenn Southwell, Paul North, Trish Gaffney,
Maxine Dobeson and Tamara Aleckson. We look forward to the finished product and the learning
opportunities that will arise.
Celebrate School Attendance
It is essential to establish a regular routine each morning and arriving at school on time is an important
part of your child’s morning routine.
It is important to be at school on time because:
It sets up good habits for the future
It provides social benefits - good play time and discussion between friends
The school day usually begins with the teachers giving of information to students.
Eg: Any changes to routines, coming events etc
It is an opportunity for important teacher/pupil interaction before school
There is plenty of time for ordering lunches if needed

Each week our teachers are awarding students who demonstrate the values of our school with a token. These
tokens are placed into a container and at Monday morning’s assembly six recipients; three from Kindergarten to
Year 2 and three from Years 3 to 6 are drawn out and awarded a Canteen voucher to the value of $2.
Not only are our students rewarded with APR Values
tokens, the teachers also award APR Stars stickers and

Food Allergy Reminder
Parents and caregivers are reminded that there are students at our school who have an acute allergy to nuts.
Students react differently, some are unable to ingest nuts, some only have to brush against another student who
has eaten a peanut butter sandwich and they can have a severe anaphylactic reaction. This allergic reaction can be
life threatening, resulting in the need for an ambulance and the use of an Epipen.
We ask that parents be mindful of other students’ medical conditions when packing their child’s lunch each day.
To assist us to ensure the safety of our students, we encourage parents not send peanut butter or Nutella
sandwiches or any other nut based food items. We thank you for your assistance with this important request.

Chook Enclosure Emerging
Tomorrow, Saturday 23rd August at 9am we will be holding a Chook Enclosure
Working Bee.
Any interested parents/grandparents who wold like to assist in the construction of
our school poultry enclosure you are invited to meet in the Kimbeth Crescent East
dead end at 9am. Tools are optional. We will need: a drop saw, nail gun, grinder,
hammers, lots of labour and some good ideas people.
This year the Spring Fair will be held on Friday 24th October starting at 11am. Once again teachers, students,
parents and caregivers all join together for a fun day of rides, stalls and food.
Each year the P&C ask for the invaluable help of Spring Fair Volunteers. If you would like to work with a friend
on a stall please state so. Most volunteers tend to take turns in looking after a friend’s children so they can both
do their time on a stall. It is vital we have extra volunteers in setting up early morning and packing up at the end
of the Fair. We will have a lot of tents, tables and supplies to transport and set up. Of course we will still need
helpers to man the stalls. Send in your stall preference ASAP.
The preordered All Day Ride Pass price will remain the same as previous years; $25 per child or $23 for families
purchasing for more than one child in that immediate family. We will start selling the all day ride passes on
Tuesday 7th October every day until the Thursday before the Fair. All Day Ride Passes bought on Spring Fair
Day will cost $35 each. Ride passes will NOT be available to high school students.
Our fundraising coordinator and committee have been hard at work collecting donations. This is a very time
consuming job. A lot of leg work is done going from business to business. We understand that some businesses
may not be able to afford to donate to us. If you have a business please consider a donation to our Spring Fair.
We appreciate all those businesses and people who have been so generous this year. We will publish all our
supporters in a later Newsletter so that you may in turn support them.
