Messenger Volume XXVIII, Issue 5 September/October, 2016 Dear Friends, The speed at which our summer passes by in Minnesota never ceases to amaze me. I know that some members of this community have had struggles this summer. I have been praying for peace and strength in your days to come. For those of you who have had a summer filled with vacations, family reunions, and weddings, I have been praying that you find yourselves refreshed after the experiences you have had. The changes in seasons and the changes in pace of life are good for us. We are looking forward to the changes in pace and season in our life at Mount Calvary this fall. There will be new adventures as a community, as well as a return to more familiar patterns. We trust that God will continue to be at work in the lives of the people called into this place. You are invited to reconnect with each other and to learn about the work that this community has been up to over the summer. Please consider this my unofficial invitation and word of welcome back! What is new around Mount Calvary this fall? In no particular order of importance, we have welcomed our new intern pastor, Dwaine Sutherland, into our life here, we have redesigned Sunday morning faith formation for multiple generations, we have transitioned in staffing structure, we have connected with the Open Door on the Mobile Lunch Box for a second year, and Mount Calvary’s Rain Garden project has been completed (a cooperative project with the City of Eagan and Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District). It was a full August and we are leaning into a fuller September. We will be spending our time working on the fabric of our community here, as well as continuing to push ourselves to be a place of hospitality for the surrounding neighborhood. Mount Calvary wants to be a congregation of the neighborhood. We want to reflect the areas around us. We strive to serve our neighbors as well. There is a need to organize ourselves around Mount Calvary’s mission to serve our neighbors and the world around us. There is a need to organize ourselves around our need to care for one another in this community. There is also a need to organize ourselves around making sure the congregation is adequately staffed and our mission adequately funded. To these ends, beginning on September 18 and concluding on October 16, Mount Calvary will be having our annual fall conversation regarding our stewardship practices. What does this conversation mean for us? First of all, the leadership of Mount Calvary is so grateful for the ongoing generous support of our mission together. Your gifts of time and financial resources allow lives to be transformed. People experience the power of the gospel because of what you do. Secondly, you will be invited to attend worship as often as possible between September 18 and October 16 as we focus on our ministry here and the invitation for participating in the important work we have. Finally, all the people of Mount Calvary will be invited and encouraged to make a financial pledge towards the work of this congregation for the 2017 year. We anticipate and look forward to the generous response of the people here. I am ever-grateful for your partnership in the work that happens here. It is a special privilege to be called as pastor to this congregation. Thank you for being who you are and for being part of changing the lives of the people around you. See You in Worship! Moving Story Training - Saturday, September 10 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at church

This prepares people who would like to help out with the Yoga Calm movements and games that will take place during the sermon portion of the 10:15 a.m. worship service beginning September 11. Please bring a lunch, a water bottle, and a yoga mat if you have one. We especially want to train 4th-6th graders as leaders, as well as interested youth and adults. You do not have to be able to be at church each Sunday in order to help out. You don’t have to be all fancy at yoga. You will be able to sign up for the Sundays you are available via Sign-Up Genius. Your help is also always welcome whatever Sundays you are here.

All Always Learning 1.0 begins Sunday, September 11 9:45 - 10:15 a.m. between worship services

This is our new weekly Sunday School for all ages. During All Always Learning 1.0 you will encounter the Bible story from the sermon that day, do an activity related to the story, respond to the story, and be blessed as you head on your way. It is open-house style so you can arrive and depart as you need. Parents/Grandparents/Caring Adults attend with their children. All people who come will be formed into small groups as they arrive to go through the learning stations together—so you will meet others as you do this too.

Registration There is no cost to participate in All Always Learning 1.0. However, those with children, please fill out a registration form (found on the bulletin board outside Pastor Rome’s office) so we can better suit your needs and communicate important information with you.

Want to help out? If you would like to help with hosting All Always Learning 1.0, please contact: [email protected]. Helping out is NOT a weekly commitment. You can sign up for the Sundays you are available on Sign-Up Genius. Your help is also always welcome whatever Sundays you are here.

What’s New at Mount Calvary this Fall Classrooms B1/B2/B3: We are combining these three rooms together to create a

Learning/Presentation Center. It will be able to accommodate more individuals than our normal class room, and we won’t have to use one of the larger rooms like the Fireside Room or the Fellowship Hall for 15-20 people. It will have a projector screen, tables and chairs for presentations and may also be used for special mission projects.

Old Church Basement/Preschool Area: The contents of this room have been

modified so there is an area for adults, an area for children and a large rug in the middle for those that want to sit on the floor. It will be used for our “Birth to 3” classes, our community group TOPS that meets on Monday nights and our Joy Choir on Wednesday evenings.

Youth Retreat Room: First we converted a class room into an “ Adult Retreat Room” and now we are

converting another classroom into a “Youth Retreat Room.” This room will have carpet squares on the floor and bungee cord/gaming chairs for seating. This room may not be done right away in September but we will be working on it as soon as B1/B2/B3 is done.

The Old Youth Room: The Praise Choir will continue to meet in this room. The bean bag chairs,

pillows and gaming chairs have been moved out so more space will be available for the choir. Bulletin Boards/Library: The bulletin boards on our main level with general information, missions

and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Women (MCLCW) will be moving down to the Lower Level Narthex. The Library will be moved from the Fireside Room to the hallway where the bulletin board information was. This will allow access to the library books on Sundays and Wednesdays when the Fireside Room is occupied.

Adult Retreat Room: We have added a bookshelf in this room and when the library is redone, we will

be moving some of the books to the “Retreat Room” for your reading pleasure.

Saying HELLO to Intern Pastor Dwaine Sutherland

My name is Dwaine Sutherland, and I am very happy to be your intern pastor for this year. I am sure we, as a faith community, will learn from each other. I look forward to getting to know everyone in this faith community as we make this journey of faith together in the upcoming year. I was born and raised in Church Hill, TN. I retired from the Air Force after serving for 27 ½ years. I have been married 21 years to my beautiful wife Amy, and I have five children between the ages of 27 and 6 and two grandchildren. After finishing my undergraduate studies at Metropolitan State University, I enrolled at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. I will return to Luther Seminary for a semester before I graduate in 2017.

South Cluster Meeting

October 8, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lakeville

Hello women of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church:

My name is Marianne Adelmann and for the next two years, I am on the executive board of the Synodical Women's Organization (SWO). Within the St. Paul Area Synod (SPAS), there are six clusters (East Central, North, North Central, South, South Central, and South East). Mount Calvary is one of 19 congregations in the South cluster of the SPAS.

On October 8, all women of Mount Calvary are invited to attend a morning of fellowship, learning, and service with other women of the SPAS-South cluster. The morning fellowship (9:30-11:30 a.m.) is being held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 20165 Heath Avenue, Lakeville, MN. Our hands-on service project will be putting together hygiene kits for homeless youth in Dakota County; and hearing about the Link's outreach to this population in Dakota County.

Supplies needed for the hygiene kits for both men and women -- regular (not travel or super) size:

shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, bar soap, feminine hygiene products, shaving cream, razors, toothpaste, individually-packaged toothbrushes, hair brushes, combs, and pics.

Collection for these items begins on September 18 and runs through October 2. Place your donated items in the red collection barrel in the Narthex.

If you would like to ride along with me, call me and I will meet you at Mount Calvary at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 8.

Mount Calvary’s Life Stories Project

"LifeStories” is a new Mount Calvary inter-generational program to help older adults recall and tell their life stories. It's a way we can honor those in our midst who are further along in their life journeys and whose life lessons can enrich our lives. And it's a way we can give expression to our belief in the sanctity of life—everyone deserves to have a permanent record of how the world is different because he or she walked this earth. We're pleased that a number of older adults have expressed interest in participating in LifeStories. What we particularly need now are interested listeners. Drawing on various resources, the LifeStories committee has developed a number of questions that can trigger life memories, as well as helpful listening techniques. While our initial focus is older adults, we are considering ways to engage people of any age in sharing interesting information about our lives and what makes us unique. We welcome others who are interested in joining us as we think and plan. If you are interested in this service project or would like to know more about it, please talk to any of us. don’t worry, just let me know when you can help. This Salvation Army program is an easy way to volunteer your time and work with other Mount Calvary and Easter Lutheran volunteers. Last year there were 8 of us that helped out; we were so efficient that we finished early! If you can help, please contact NaDyne Glidden at [email protected] or call the church office at 651-454-2344 . Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 26 @ noon.
