Faith Story By Richard A. Bailey
I was very small when I had my first contact with the Lutheran Church. Lois’s aunt told us that she took us when we were very small to Sunday School at Messiah. We were both dressed in sailor outfits, and people thought we were twins. I put a picture on the table in the narthex taken of Lois and I at a birthday party later when we were a little older. My parents and I attended a different denomination as I was growing up. When I was a sophomore and about 15 years old, Rev. Grobe preached a sermon on Isaiah 6:8 & 9 “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said , ‘Here am I, send me!’” I felt that the Lord was calling me to become a pastor. In later years a physician asked me if I heard a voice. I replied, “No, it was an inner urging.” But this experience scared me so much that it was a long time before I talked to my parents about it. At that time I thought that I wanted to be coach because of my interest in sports and love of children. I had not done well in school in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. I had been in some mi-nor trouble so I did not think I was qualified for such a responsibility but God kept urging me! My parents en-couraged me, and guided me to talk to the pastor. Shortly thereafter he left Burlington, and my family was looking for a new church home. I was dating my first wife, and I began attending Bethany Lutheran Church. My parents and I joined the Lutheran Church. I was ordained into the Lutheran ministry June 9, 1957. Pas-tor Wayne Weissenbuehler has often said to me, “We were blest to be able to serve Christ and his church.” And that is certainly how I feel! I think of how many people I was able to visit in their homes, at nursing homes, and at the hospitals. How wonderful to be able to share scripture, prayer and Holy Communion with them! I have placed on the table my two communion sets and occasional service books. The early set is very worn. How blest I was to be able to hear their stories - some rich with faith experiences. Some sad with such painful stories. I remember one older man telling me his father beat him with a buggy whip. As he told me tears streamed down his face! But he was a gentle man, and a wonderful Christian! I believe God touched me on the shoulder, and called me into the ministry. I did not understand the experience then, and I do not understand at 85 years old. But one thing I want to make very clear! If I had been a coach that would have been an equally high vocation. We have heard and read the stories of the care and coverage of the coaches and teachers at Parkland, Florida school. Those teachers and coaches protected the youth, and some died doing so. I wonder if I would have been as courageous and faithful! I look at the youth of that high school with great admiration! And with them I say we will make this a better world.
From the Pastor’s Desk Christ is risen! God bless all of us who have made yet another Lenten journey, who minded the Ash Wednesday admonitions for that journey, and now get to experience the lovely grace of Easter. Christ is risen, and He is risen indeed! I always feel lighter on Easter—tired, but lighter—when the burden of Lenten expectations, and the burden of late winter, are both lifted, suddenly and mysteriously. For me, Easter is always a surprise and a gift, a Lamb of God gift, a Eucharist gift. We will have taken communion together on Easter morning, with singing and rejoicing, and all the inside lilies blooming. And the outside dirt is almost ready for planting. I love it. I feel better at Easter!
Do you remember those Ash Wednesday challenges? “As disciples of Jesus, we are called to a discipline that contends against evil and resists whatever leads us away from love of God and neighbor. I invite you, therefore, to the discipline of Lent—self-examination and repentance, prayer and fasting, sacrificial giving and works of love—strengthened by the gifts of word and sacrament…..”
Not as though we don’t have the same challenges in front of us all the rest of our Christian journey or all the rest of the year. But celebrating the risen Jesus makes the walk a less uphill than it seemed in February, a little happier, a little more…light. Like the puzzled couple on the Emmaus road on Easter Sunday evening, walking in Jesus’ company, encouraged and a bit bouncier as they told Jesus the events of the past few days in Jerusalem. And he nods his head and grins at them. No wonder we often put a drawing of Jesus laughing on the bulletin cover on the first Sunday after Easter! He loves it too. That story is recorded in Luke, the middle part of chapter 24. Read it and put yourself in their shoes, or sandals, for a few minutes.
Want a new ministry challenge this summer? Come with us for a week, Sunday July 15 through Saturday July 21, to volunteer in inner-city Detroit. Homeowners who have stayed in these neighborhoods need help maintaining their homes and yards. Our host is Rippling Hope, who works with neighborhood associations to get these chores done. We expect to learn more about walking with Jesus from them, and we get an adventure in the bargain. Information packets are on the table in the narthex. Our next meeting is Sunday, April 29, 5pm, in the Messiah library. Or ask Dennis or Pastor Susanne for information. God bless us every one this Easter. He is risen indeed! Pastor Susanne+

Messiah Preschool SHAPING FUTURES THROUGH FAITH BASED EDUCATION 3, 4, & 5-Year-old Sessions
Greetings from the children’s wing of the church. Our Preschool Logo is
“Shaping Futures”. Spring surely will come this year we tell the children.
March truly came in like a lion! The children have been singing a new song: “Snow, snow, cold
wind go away, little children want to play!” The children are anticipating outside play that they
have been missing. We are learning about weather both good and bad has been hands on this
month for sure. They are looking forward to “lamb” April weather. The seeds of learning that
have been planted in the children can now shine with all their accomplishments and
growth as we have been busy conducting conferences with our preschool parents. The
children have grown in so many ways this school year both physically and academically. We are
so proud of their accomplishments and the parents are truly excited with the growth they have
seen in their children just from the beginning of the school year. We have visitors and field trips
lined up to go along with their learning themes for this month. Ms. Pat from the Library comes to
read monthly, Pastor Susanne comes to read and sing with children monthly. Our Dental
Hygienist will be here to do her final check on their teeth. We will be going with the 4’s to the
Recycling Plant and the West Burlington Park. The 3’s will get to visit the downtown fire station
and then the library. We will have some other parent community helpers and our friends from the
community that always come to share their jobs with the children. We will also be learning and
studying bugs up close. We have six very healthy Hornworms the children have been caring for
since they were small eggs. They will soon be in the pupa stage and then their “babies”
will be born again as a beautiful adult moth. A very timely lesson don’t you
think…? He or she will be allowed to fly away and hopefully live a beautiful life! The
children are so excited to be new parents soon. Like our praying mantis in the fall
the children do much of the care for the insects which they really enjoy. Science is so much fun
at this age. Soon we will be enjoying some end of the year celebrations. Promotion and gradua-
tions are scheduled for May. In the meantime, it’s registration time for children ages 3, 4, and 5.
If you would like a registration form or information about next year’s sessions, please call Ms
Margie (our Director) 319.754.7591 ext. 2. The new Preschool Board has met and has
established our priorities and I look forward to a renewed interest and support of this wonderful
ministry that comes from our wing of Messiah Lutheran Church! As always, thank you for your
support of “our” preschool and its mission to Shape Futures. Hoppy….Hoppy….
Hoppy…. Spring! It finally has come!!!!
