Metropolis

Metropolis is a city in turmoil.

Revolution is brewing amongst the

workers, labouring deep in their

underground city – the rich, in their

golden pleasure gardens, are desperate

to regain control.

The city’s rulers hire a scientist to create

an android replica of Maria, the leader

of the revolutionaries – the android takes

her place, incites the population to rise,

and in the chaos the children are lost.

But there is still hope…

Inspired by Fritz Lang’s classic film,

Metropolis is a powerful new production

from internationally acclaimed theatre

company Kaos UK. Metropolis blends

the company’s physical style with live

sound and visual technology to create a

distinctly cinematic, scientific piece of

twenty first century fiction.

This cunning thief will steal your Dad’s

snores, your cat’s purr, the snap, crackle

and pop noise your cereal makes. Life will

never be the same again! Think: What

would you do if you couldn’t atchoo?

The Sound Collector is a bright, funny

play which explores the potential of sound

and silence through poetry,

music and audience

participation.

“A witty, poetic look

at how sounds shape

and, in some ways,

dictate our lives. A play

to amuse and gently

“Nick Harper is following in the

footsteps of his father, the great Roy

Harper, as a singer-song writer. There

are stylistic echoes of his old man in

his singing, and he possesses an

equally idiosyncratic artistic vision,

but he is emerging as very much his

own man.

“His own songs are powerful and

unconventional, whether dealing with

politics, love and friendship… or a

favourite pub in Ireland.

“He is cutting, comic, tough and

tender by turns, and sings with a

disturbing, unsettling passion that is

entirely compelling.

The Bank JobIn a small, lopsided lodging house, an

unlikely trio of would-be crooks plot the

largest bank heist that 1950s London

has known. But things do not go

according to plan…

“It’s like watching the story Ealing

never told.” Paul Hunter

The Bank Job is Spike Theatre’s tribute

to the black and white comedies of the

fifties. Set in a world of bedsits, Pathe

News bulletins and the Salvation Army,

the show uses a range of physical

theatre techniques to tell the story of a

hilariously chaotic crime caper.

“The Holmes Brothers’ excellence

reaches beyond the catch-all labels of

blues and gospel. It’s a sound also

stirred profoundly with country and

rural soul. They can swing and rock…

So rich, so beautiful, a Holmes

Brothers’ show is a truly enriching

event.” NOW Magazine

The Holmes Brothers are Wendell

Holmes, Sherman Holmes and Popsy

Dixon – three New York musicians who

have been honing their unique gospel

blues sound for over 30 years. Since their

‘discovery’ in 1989 they have released six

highly acclaimed albums and toured

worldwide. Their appearance at The Met

was one of the musical highlights of ‘97.

“Stripping their sizzling soul music to

the bone, the Holmes Brothers were a

living, breathing testament to the fact

that great music is timeless… the trio

played like they wrote the book,

whipping through it all with a spiritual

fervour and a total sense of

commitment that you could feel way

down in your bones.” Metroland

Huw and Tony

WilliamsHuw and Tony Williams – not related, but

closer than brothers – have been

performing together on the unusual musical

combination of acoustic guitar (Huw) and

double bass (Tony) for over twenty years.

“Well-crafted songs, prepared with

humour and verve, and startlingly

brilliant instrumental technique. They

are the best live act in the country.”

Western Mail

Returning after their popular appearance in

June last year, they will be performing

songs from their new album “Who Are All

These People?”, including material from “A

Generous Anger” their musical life story of

Labour hero Aneurin Bevan.

“Great songs, good humour, terrific

rapport with their audience, great tea

makers and they

even tap dance!”

A ruined jungle temple and two giant stone

statues are the only things that remain of a

long lost South American people. Here in

the ruins we meet The Storycatchers –

travellers who breathe new life back into

old stories with wit, humour and

imagination.

We travel through hot deserts and steamy

jungles telling stories rich in colour…

Hear them tell the story of creation… see

how the god of creation first tries to make

people from stone… watch the ‘new

people’ as they learn to farm, how to grow

crops, and many other

valuable lessons.

The Storycatchers

is told in an innova-

tive style with

hand and rod

puppets, music

and atmos-

pheric lighting.

would have no choice but to be his wife.

Rhythm ‘n’ Blues

“Back in 1966 Yorkshire lad Chris Smith

moved to London… There he met a

student called Freddie Bulsara – that’s

Freddie Mercury to you and me… later

Chris teamed up with Brian May and

Roger Taylor in Smile. He quit the band

to pursue his first love, the blues.

“Thirty years on, and Chris fronts his

own outfit, the King Ivory Band,

delivering the sort of

honest, imaginative

blues which would

make Eric Clapton

Bulsara’s Blues

Connection

Two gloriously funny puppet plays for

children aged 3–9 years which take an

entertaining look at pollution, waste and

litter.

The first story is set in the frozen Arctic and

tells of two Innuits who have a big problem

with their rubbish. With the help of a seal

and a polar bear they find a solution which

helps everyone. In the second we meet the

amazingly repellent Litter Bug, a

talking dustbin called Horace

and a very brave girl!

Tales from the Washing Line! features

puppets created by Ken Haines, puppetry

workshop leader for the Royal National

Theatre.
