WELCOME TO THE MET

R 0161 761 2216 P www.themet.biz

Autumn is always an exciting

time of year for The Met

but for 2013 it gets even

better with two exciting

festivals to look forward to.

For the third year of

Ramsbottom Festival we’re

delighted to welcome The

Bridgewater Hall as a partner

who have helped us to

deliver our best line-up yet.

We’ve put together a great

programme of talented artists

from all over the UK and we

hope you join us for what

has become a very special

weekend for Bury and beyond.

Homegrown celebrates

everything great about

English folk music and hosting

England’s only folk expo for

delegates from around the

world is a great privilege

for The Met and for Bury.

We’re really excited to take

over Bury’s Drill Hall to

welcome back Kate Rusby

and Seth Lakeman, but please

make time to discover the

emerging talent performing

throughout the weekend.

This season The Met is

crammed full of music, fringe

theatre and comedy. Last

year was our greatest ever

for number of events and

audiences – achieving no 39

in the PRS top 100 UK venues.

Not bad for a small scale

venue with big ambitions.

There’s lots more to us

than just a venue with our

community work with schools,

our recording studio supporting

young talent and a whole host

of opportunities to get involved

in the arts – for health, fun or

professional development.

All this against a background

of funding uncertainty and

debate about public funding

for the arts. We are lucky in

Bury with support from Arts

Council and Bury Council

who realise the value of what

we do in both satisfying

communities and developing

Bury as a cultural destination

alongside the other great

attractions in the borough.

Thanks also to our new

corporate supporters

which this season

include RRG Group, The

Village hotel and O2.

Please enjoy the brochure

and come and support

what we do – simply

by buying tickets and

enjoying the programme

we’ve worked hard

to bring for you.

Best wishes,

David Agnew, Director

Over twenty-five years

Couglan has made the

most uncompromising,

wholly personal music.

She is unique in blending

the whisky-blurred,

smoke-seared, husky

of Billie Holiday and

Texan Eric Taylor is a

sage musician, a lyrical

genius and a master of

the guitar.

If you’re not familiar

people such as Nanci

Peggy Lee combined with

the line of deep, down

and dirty blues singers

back to Memphis Minnie

and Bessie Smith.

Mary enfolds it all

in a delicious and

unapologetic Irish drawl,

sceptical, rueful and

mournful all in one voice.

He has created a

multitude of fans and

devotees that are legends

themselves, artists who

have long considered

Taylor to be a teacher and

a lantern bearer whose

time is long overdue.

It’s the 80s and wannabe rock star Robbie Hart is

everyone’s favourite wedding singer. He’s the life and

soul of the party until he gets jilted at the altar. Shot

through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as

disastrous as his own, until he meets Julia, a sweet

waitress. The only trouble is, she’s about to be married.

Can Robbie pull off the performance of the decade and

win the girl of his dreams?

Music by Matthew Sklar, Book by Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy, Lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Based on the New Line Cinema film written by Tim Herlihy.

Otis GibbsFriday 25 October 8pm / £12

Otis Gibbs is often referred to as a folk artist, but that is

a simplistic way to describe a man with an amazing past.

Harder Than Hammered Hell is his sixth album. The title

was inspired by Otis’ experiences as a tree-planter where

a co-worker would describe ground too hard to dig as

“harder than hammered hell.” He also used the phrase for

a difficult job, or a tough person. Otis found it a fitting

metaphor for the difficulties of leading a creative

life. If you like Woody Guthrie, Steve Earle or

Bruce Springsteen, you'll love Otis Gibbs.

Folk Song in England Study DayPresented by The Full English, a project run by the English Folk Dance and Song Society

Saturday 12 October 10am-4pm / £10 (includes lunch)

A one-day course led by

Steve Roud for people

who have an interest in

English Folk Song and

would like the opportunity

to learn more about its

roots, development, and

the essential part it played

in communities in this

country in the past.

The focus will be on

the historical, social

and personal contexts

of folk singing rather

than its technical

musical attributes.

No musical ability is

necessary, and no singing

required. There will be

the opportunity to hear

rarely-played archival

field-recordings of singers

from up and down the

country, as well as the

chance to see archival film.

This course is aimed

primarily at those with

little or no prior knowledge

English Folk Song, but

intermediate students will

also find plenty to interest

and entertain them.
