Warnings & safety information

Always check input voltage & frequency beforemaking any connections.Incorrect connections will damage the equipment! Always follow the ap-plicable electric safety regulations in all installation work!

Always make sure that the process pipe or chest is unpressurized andempty.

While taking a sample: Do not stand at close proximity to the sampleoutlet pipe or discharge tube while sampling! Especially when taking asample from a hot pressurized process line, watch out for dischargingsteam and hot sample.

When sorted by material, nearly all parts of the device can be recycled.A materials list is delivered with the device. Upon request, the manufac-turer will provide more detailed instructions for recycling and disposal.

Used devicesmay also be returned to themanufacturer for recycling anddisposal against a separate fee.

1. Introduction1.1. General descriptionMetso Consistency Sampler (Metso Nove) is designedto extract a pulp sample from a process pipe. It is suitedfor all screened chemical and mechanical pulps and forrecycled fiber pulps at low and medium consistencyranges. Metso High Consistency Sampler (Metso NoveH) is recommended for high consistency pulps, un-screened pulp and long fiber pulps.

The sampler head is shaped and dimensioned to en-sure a representative sample. The head reaches suffi-ciently far into the process pipe, past the water layerflowing along the pipe wall.

The interior of the sampler can be flushed with waterafter sample taking, so as to prevent any accumulationof drying pulp. Since the sampling valve shut-offmechanism is at the head of the sampler, the devicewill not get blocked even during long duty intervals.

The shut-off mechanism does not contain any wear-ing parts, such as rubber seals.

1.2. Types and applicationsMetso Nove is available in three types, depending onthe mounting method:– clamp-mounted (Nove S),– thread-mounted (Nove T) and– flange-mounted (Nove F).

All types are available with either manual or pneu-matic actuator.

Manually operated sampler (Fig. 1) is suitable foreasily accessible locations. The pneumatically operatedtype (Fig. 2) is also suitable for locations of difficultaccess.

The pneumatically operated sampler is controlledwith a control valve mounted close to the sampler, orthrough remote control. The pneumatically operatedtype can also be used for automatic sampling.

Material options for parts in constant contact withthe process medium include AISI 316L and Titanium.The flange-mounted model (Nove F) has fiberglass-reinforced plastic process coupling.– AISI 316L is suited for the majority of applications.– Titanium is recommended for bleaching stages.

2. Installation2.1. Installation site and dimensionsThe installation space required for each sampler typeis shown in Fig. 1 and 2.

The sampler should be installed in such a place thata representative sample is obtained and the delaybetween consistency transmitter and sampling point isas short as possible. Suitable mounting locations areshown in Fig. 3 and 4.

When the sampler is installed immediately after astock pump, it should be mounted as shown in Fig. 3,on the side with regard to the pump.

There should be a 45° angle between the pump shaftand sampler on the side where the pulp flow leaves thepump.

NOTE: Observe safety requirements when installing theprocess coupling and sampler! Installation must be car-ried out by a qualified, experienced person.

NOTE: If the mounting location is not easily accessible,a service platform should be constructed to ensure ac-cess to the device.

2.2. Mounting with clamp coupling (Nove S)Make a hole to the process pipe, hole diameter 50 mm(2"), and prepare it for welding (V-groove). Insert thecoupling to the hole so that edges A are flush with theinside surface of the pipe. Then weld the coupling tothe pipe as shown in Fig. 5.

Note that it is not necessary to machine the straightedge of the process coupling into a curve shape tomatch the shape of the pipe.

When the coupling has been welded in place, placethe PTFE seal in its groove on the coupling. Then insertthe sampler and fasten it with the clamp. Tighten theclamp screws to a torque of 6.5 Nm.

2.3. Mounting with thread coupling (Nove T)Make a hole to the process pipe and prepare it forwelding (V-groove). The diameter of the hole shouldbe approximately 1 mm (0.04") larger than the outsidediameter d of the coupling. Weld the coupling to thepipe as shown in Fig. 6.

When the coupling has been welded in place, applylocking medium (for example Loctite 572) to the threadon the sampler tip. Then screw the sampler manuallyinto the coupling. When the sampler is fully inserted,the discharge tube must point down.

2.4. Mounting with flanged coupling (Nove F)Make a hole to the process pipe for the fiberglass-rein-forced plastic coupling, and glue the coupling in posi-tion as shown in Fig. 8.

2.5. Sample discharge tubeA plastic discharge tube is included in the sampler de-livery. Attach the tube (A) to the sampler with hoseclamps (B) as shown in Fig. 9.

In case the sampler is installed in a location that isnot easily accessible, for example very high up, use alonger discharge tube or a metal pipe. If a metal pipeis used, the connection to the sampler should be madewith a section of flexible plastic tube to prevent thetransmission of vibration.

Below the sampling point, install a funnel (Fig. 7)with a pipe leading to the closest sewer. To preventpulp overflow and splashing, use at least diameter 60mm (2.36") pipe for the purpose.

NOTE: The funnel in not included in delivery.

2.6. Water flushing connectionThe sampler should be fitted with a flushing waterconnection to prevent clogging and to ensure represen-tative samples. Flushing is not necessary in cases wherethe drying and accumulation of pulp inside the deviceis not a problem, or where sample representativenessis not a critical factor.

The sampler has an R1/4" flushing connector (Fig.9, C) for the connection of a pressurized water supply.The water supply must be provided with a manual shut-off valve (not included in delivery).

NOTE: Flushing with water is recommended in all cases.

2.7. Installing compressed air regulating valveMount the manually operated compressed air valve(Fig. 10) with two M6 screws on a steady base near thesampler.

Attach the warning plate supplied for the regulatingvalve at close proximity to the valve, where it will beeasy to see.

2.8. Closed/open detectorNove P (pneumatic) is available with a limit switchthat provides a binary signal to the system from thesampling moment (Fig. 13).

The sampler is delivered with the limit switch in-stalled. Test the operation of the switch by opening andclosing the sampler, and adjust the position of theswitch if necessary.

3. Sampling3.1. General instructionsUse at least 1 L sample vessel equipped with a lid.Transport the sample vessels in a basket suitable forthe purpose. Before taking consistency samples, makesure that the consistency level stays as stable as pos-sible.

To get a representative average consistency samplefrom the process we recommended taking 3 to 5samples at e.g. 30 second intervals.

This is dependent on the importance of the processpoint and what the sample(s) is to be used for (calibra-tion, offset adjustment, follow up, etc.). Do not makean offset adjustment on any consistency transmitterbased on a single laboratory sample. A single sampleis not accurate enough for that purpose; see TAPPIT240.

The laboratory will then analyze the consistency ofeach sample separately.

Another method to obtain a good average consist-ency sample is to run out 5 to 10 litres of pulp at a timeand to take a sample from this amount for laboratoryanalysis in accordance with the TAPPI T240 standard.The pulp should be well mixed when taking the samplefrom the large vessel.

3.2. Adjusting the sample discharge rate1. Adjust the retaining nut (Fig. 1, part A) and adjust

the valve stroke for 1.0 to 1.5 L/s sample dischargerate. If the valve stem is adjusted for maximumopening, the discharge rate may also be less than1 L/s.

3.3. ProcedureSee Fig. 21. Write down the transmitter consistency readings.2. Open the sampler fully and wait for a stable flow.3. Insert the sample collecting vessel (use a 1 L cup)

into the flow with a steady movement. Fill up (notfully, 0.7 - 0.8 L is enough). Remove the vesselwith a steady movement from the pulp flow, andfinally close the sampler.

4. Close the sample vessel tightly with a lid. Writethe transmitter tag number, transmitter consistencyreading, sampling date and time on a sticker andattach it to the sample vessel.

5. Open the water valve and clean the sampler. Re-move any splashes.

6. Take the sample to the laboratory immediately foranalysis.

3.4. Automatic sample takingMetso Nove pneumatic can be used for automaticsample taking, for instance when the average consist-ency at a sampling point must be observed over a spe-cific period of time. Metso Nove discharge tube is thendirected to a large-volume receptacle equipped with acover.

NOTE: Flushing cannot be used in this case. However,the pulp will not dry in the channels because the end ofthe discharge tube is in a covered receptacle and underthe surface of the sample pulp.

The sampling times and sample volumes can be de-termined with a timer through a solenoid valve or withremote control.

Adjustable restrictors must be used at the exhaustair side to attenuate the piston stroke.
