Mexico's participation in the First Preparatory Committee for the 2020

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference

Ambassador Alicia Buenrostro headed the Mexican delegation at the First Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, which took place in Vienna from May 2nd to 12th. On that occasion, Mexico reiterated its strong and active commitment to the international community's goals to achieve a nuclear-weapons-free world through the fulfilment of the liabilities incurred by the Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Ambassador Buenrostro delivered a speech during the consultations on nuclear disarmament, non-

proliferation and pacific use of nuclear energy, in which she pointed out the constant contribution of Mexico to designing and implementing measures and mechanisms to eliminate nuclear weapons and assure the secure and pacific use of nuclear energy.

Mexico at the Vienna Energy Forum 2017

From May 9th to 12th, the Vienna Energy Forum 2017 took place in Vienna under the theme of “Sustainable energy for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement”. This fifth edition of the forum was attended by 1,500 representatives from more than 100 countries who participated in the high-level panels realized at the Vienna Imperial Palace (Hofburg) and in the side events at the United Nations base in Vienna. The main topics discussed at the forum focused on sustainability and the fundamental connection between energy, climate and development, as well as the synergies among Sustainable

Development Goals (SDGs). The Mexican delegation consisted of representatives of the Permanent Mission of Mexico, Santiago Creuheras, Director General for Efficiency and Sustainable Energy of the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER) and Ernesto Fernandez, Technical Director for Fishery and Chains of Value of the Mexican institution Fideicomisos Instituidos en Relación con la Agricultura (FIRA). The representative of SENER, Santiago Creuheras, participated in the high-level panel “The pioneer role of innovation technologies”, in which he gave an introduction of the projects implemented in the course of the energy reform in Mexico and extended an invitation to the international community to participate in the event “Dialogues for the Future of Energy”, which will take place in Mexico City in September 2017. He also delivered a key note together with the representative of FIRA, Ernesto Fernandez, at the side event “Scaling up Energy Efficiency Financing: Lessons Learned from the Climate Investment Funds”, in which he talked about Mexico's experiences in this field.

Visit of the folklore group of the Instituto Blaise Pascale in Bratislava and

Vienna

On May 30th, Ambassador Buenrostro received the folklore group of the Instituto Blaise Pascale and Mexican painter Rafael Ortega at the headquarters of the Embassy of Mexico in Vienna. The students and the artist participated in the 19th anniversary of the Mexican Cultural Festival in Slovakia, where they gave a presentation of Mexico's cultural diversity at

the House of Culture Dúbravka in Bratislava on May 25th, 2017.

Music Friday at the ICM with Erika Cano and Héctor

Jasso On May 12th, the second Music Friday took place at the Cultural Institute of Mexico in Vienna (Türkenstraße 15, 1090 Vienna). The event was attended by members of the Mexican community and friends of Mexico. Violinist Erika Cano Magdaleno and violoncellist Héctor Jasso played pieces of classical music.

Mexico's biodiversity has the world's largest number of reptiles

Mexico has the privilege to be the home of 12 per cent of all flora and fauna species of the world. The protection of biodiversity is one of the country's utmost priorities. Mexico has the world's largest number of reptile species and the second largest number of mammals. It has the fourth largest number of amphibians and the fifth largest diversity of plants. Mexico continues working on the creation of sustainable tourism zones, in order that fewer known

Mexico is the world's third largest honey supplier

Mexico has announced the implementation of a new programme to strengthen its honey industry. The national production of honey will receive an impulse through an investment amounting to 280 million Mexican Pesos. 80 per cent of Mexico's 200,000 apiculturist are women. The current value of honey production amounts to 500 million dollars, of which 150 million dollars are destined to be exported. Thus, Mexico is the world's fifth largest honey producer and third largest honey supplier after China and Argentina.

Latin American Day 2017 at the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber

On May 15th, the commercial event “Latin American Day 2017” was organized by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ). Austrian entrepreneurs came together to talk about their experiences with Latin America. The event was also attended by Ambassador Alicia Buenrostro and by Nicole Felix, commercial delegate of the Mexican trade office Proméxico in Germany, who gave a presentation on business opportunities in Mexico.

33rd international dairy cattle conference in Mexico The Mexican dairy trade union (Gremio Lechero de México) and Laboratorios Tornel will host the 33rd international dairy cattle conference (CIGAL, abbreviation in Spanish), which will take place at the Expo Guadalajara in Jalisco (Mexico) from August 23rd to 24th. CIGAL is a specialized trade platform for Mexico's dairy industry and offers an excellent opportunity to establish and strengthen business relations, exchange know-how on new technologies and identify market trends, i.e. new dairy and agricultural machines. The event is addressed to dairy farmers, milk producers, associations, enterprises and chains of production of the agriculture industry, as well as to public and private institutions in this sector. Report on the Results of Tourist Activity According to data provided by the Mexican Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR), as per March 2017, Mexico's tourism sector experienced a rise in international visits during the first trimester 2017. The Mexican National Bank informed that the number of international visitors amounted to 24.4 million; 392,000 visitors more than in the same period of the previous year, which means a growth of 1.6 per cent. The number of international tourist amounted to 9.3 million in the first trimester 2017, this is a slight rise by 516,000 tourists in comparison to the same period in 2016 and an annual growth of 5.9 per cent. The foreign currency revenue from international visitors accounted for 5,781 million dollars, which is a rise in 10 per cent in comparison to the same period in 2016. 21st Children's Drawing Contest “Éste es mi México”

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME, abbreviation in Spanish) invites all children to participate in the 21st Children's Drawing Contest “Éste es mi México” under this year's theme “The Monarch Butterfly and its lifecycle in North America”. Every year, thousands of children participate on the international children's drawing contest “Éste es mi México” (This is my Mexico). There are 12 winners and another 50 awarded participants. The chosen drawings are integrated in a touring exhibition, which is presented in Mexico City first and in the whole world afterwards. This year, all children are invited to research about the Monarch Butterfly, its habitat and migration through the three countries of North America, the stages of its life and the challenges of its journey to the place of destiny, and to draw a painting about it. What do I need to participate?

1. Draw your painting. 2. Send your drawing to the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Mexico before the deadline: Friday

October 13, 2017. 3. You must be 6 to 14 years old. 4. Draw or paint your drawing with a brush, pencil, acryl, watercolours, crayons or another

painting material you prefer. 5. Draw or paint on a square painting paper or cardboard (30 x 30 cm). 6. Fill-out the registration form with your personal data, print and glue it on the backside of your

drawing.

Distance learning offer 2017 of the Universidad Abierta y a Distancia de

México

The Open and Distance Learning University of Mexico (Universidad Abierta y a Distancia de México, UnADM) invites Mexican citizens living abroad to take the following distance courses under the terms mentioned below: Licenciatura degree in: * Tourism business administration * Communal development * Land management * Small and medium-sized business administration and management * Mathematics * International Marketing * Social politics and projects * Public security * Software developer (engineer's degree) * Environmental technologies (engineer's degree) Participants need a computer, a tablet or a smartphone with Internet access in order to complete the admission process. The courses require basic skills of informatics and experience in the use of the Internet.

Registration is only possible for the school year 2017. If the course is not concluded in time or form, it will not be recognized. In order to continue studying at the open university UnADM, it is necessary to complete the admission process again under the terms of the following call for participation.

7th Environmental Short Film Festival “Ecofilm”

The international environmental short film festival “Ecofilm” invites film producers to participate in the 7th film contest under this year's theme “Sustainable Food”, which will take place in Mexico City in October 2017.

Since 2011, “Ecofilm” is organized to create consciousness of the main

environmental challenges on our planet through the creation of audio-visual material. “Ecofilm” supports the promotion of Mexican cinema in the world and proposes solutions for a healthier environment.
