PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dear Members,

I would like to begin my report by thanking Members for the huge amount of support they have shown the National Committee. We have been very heartening by all the members

who have taken the time to contact Committee with their ideas, thoughts, sponsorship and support shown. It is your Association and what you make it and from the support giving

I‘m sure we have some very good times ahead. MHAA is in good hands with some extremely loyal and enthusiastic Members out there.

Our biggest event of the year the National Show is now behind us for another year and what a fantastic show it was. The atmosphere as usual was great with some very keen showies on

hand. The standard of the horses was so consistent you can all be very proud of the quality of miniatures horses being bred by MHAA Members. Thank you also for your dedication to

our wonderful breed of equines it is really showing through in the showring.

I know we all have our vision of the ideal horse in miniature and I think we are fast approaching that very dream, thanks everyone for your determination to stick with the little

guys so that we can hopefully all continue breeding beautiful horses and also showing the world how very talented and versatile our minis are.

Our Membership continues to increase and your National Committee continually endeavor to not only improve the Association for the benefit of all its Members as much as

possible, but also always to attempt to move our breed forward.

The miniature horse I believe has a huge future in the equine world, it is up to us to help it realized as that and become one of the best known little equines around.

On behalf of the Members, the National Committee would like to thank Shirley Smith

for her considerable contribution during her time on National Committee, initially as a Committee Member, then taking over the role of Secretary. Most Members would be

unaware of the enormous contribution Shirley made while on Committee, as she spent countless hours restoring records, complying with statutory regulations, implementing new Member packs and was indeed one of the best Secretary‘s that MHAA ever had.

Shirley was also instrumental and put in a huge effort to get Fine Lines back on track and getting out to Members on time (unfortunately this issue is not, but we will be working

towards using her timeline‘s for future issue). So, THANKYOU Shirley, all the time and effort you put in has not gone un-noticed or un-appreciated and MHAA and its Members

have benefited from your commitment, dedication and diligence.

As foaling has finished and the show season is over in most States it is time to look at finalizing some of that very necessary paperwork.

Stallion Returns – it is never too early to lodge your return. If your stallion has finished serving send it in now. They MUST be in by the 1st of August but the earlier the better

so that you do not forget or miss the closing date. Remember to include ALL outside mares, any mares that you have sold and all mares that you have served even if you

believe them to be empty because if the mares are not on a stallion return and they foal then the progeny will have to be parent qualified prior to registration.

Service Certificates – remember to issue service certificates to all outside mares and to the

new owners of any mares that you have sold which have been served.

If you have purchased a mare that was served by a stallion, contact the stallion owner to make sure that they have included the mare on their appropriate stallion return.

Now for some Do‘s and DO NOT‘s:-

Do – return registration papers to the Office of any horse that has died, the registration

will be notarized and sent back to you if you indicate that is what you want. Do – brand or microchip all foals prior to sale. The microchip number must be recorded

on the registration paper. Do – site brands or read microchip number if measuring a horse to ensure that it is the correct horse.

DO NOT – sign an undated form if measuring a horse. DO NOT – sign measuring forms if you have not actually measured that horse.

DO NOT – breed from your colt/stallion unless it has passed a Veterinary Certificate of Soundness because if it does not pass any resultant foals cannot be

registered. DO NOT – let your young colts run with fillies or mares, you might be quite surprised to find out that those young colts can easily impregnate a mare.

DO NOT - forget that any Stallions used in the 2012/2013 breeding season must have their DNA on file prior to any subsequent Foal registration. If this is done

prior to the 1st of August, 2012 it will be put on your stallion/stallions registration at no cost. After the 1st of August it will cost $11.00 if not done at

an upgrade and/or transfer. Anyone who has a registry issue or query please feel free to contact me:

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING DNA: 12 May, 2012

There was a Resolution passed last year, introducing a new Rule 20.11, with regard the recording of DNA

in our Registry.

This reads:

Rule 20.11 Every entire used to cover a mare/s is to have DNA on file prior to being used. This is to come into effect for the 2012/2013 breeding season.

The wording of this Rule will put the Association in a position of refusing Registration of some foals, with

no opportunity to ever have these foals Registered, other than ―unknown, unknown‖ parentage after they

reach the age of two years old, if the Stallion‘s DNA is not lodged with MHAA, PRIOR to the Stallion SERVING Mare/s. In addition, it could be read that it applies only for the 2012/2013 breeding season.

The National Committee now believe that the Rule as it stands, does not lend itself to the recording of DNA of Stallions into our Registry, without causing major concerns for Members and believe that this

would be an unacceptable situation and in no way in the best interest of the Association or its Members.

Having taken advice, the National Committee unanimously agree that this Rule needs to be changed and believe that this is the most sensible and workable way around resolving a situation, which could have

been detrimental to the Association.

Therefore, effective immediately (12 May, 2012) using the powers given to the National Committee of Management, under Article 31.3, we have removed Rule 20.11 (above) and replaced with:-

Rule 20.11

Every entire used to cover a mare/s is to have DNA on file prior to any subsequent Foal

Registration. This is to come into effect from the 2012/2013 breeding season.

The rewording of Rule 20.11 will enable foals to be registered at any time once the Stallion’s

DNA is lodged and recorded with MHAA

What does this mean to our Members?

You must still submit a Stallion return in the same way as always.

If you are going to register Foals, born any time after August 1st 2013 the sire must have DNA on file

with MHAA before the foal can be Registered.

Where you source your DNA results from is up to the Member.

Our Registration papers have been modified to include a field specifically to show DNA, parentage

qualified, colour Genetics etc.

Send in your original paperwork with DNA results and you will receive new updated paperwork showing on the paperwork that the horse has DNA on file with MHAA.

If you do this before July 31st it will be done at no cost.

If you send in DNA results for a permanent registered Stallion after July 31st 2012, there will be an $11.00 fee to update the paperwork.

If you send in DNA results at an upgrade, temporary adult or permanent adult, it will be recorded

and included on the paperwork at no extra charge.

You can voluntarily send in DNA results for Mares and Fillies, this will be included on paperwork at no charge if done at an upgrade.

This is taking the Stud Book of MHAA to a new and exciting level of professionalism, in line with other breed Registries who truly value the integrity of their breed and we congratulate the Members of MHAA

for having the foresight to embrace this change.

Over the next few days, we will email as a separate E-News, information on DNA Typing and Parentage Testing, giving information on alternative labs that can be used, ie the Qld lab through MHAA and also

via the American lab.

Procedure to have DNA Testing done

through MHAA / Australian Genetics Testing Pty Ltd, Qld:

1. Complete a Work Order, noting that DNA Testing is required and send to the office, along with

the payment of $87-50 for each Horse that is being tested

Please note: Members do not need to complete a DNA/Parent Verification of Horses Form,

these are now obsolete.

2. A Hair Kit will be sent to you from the MHAA office which will have full directions on how to take the hair sample, with it will be the appropriate paperwork, along with a self-addressed envelope to

the Australian Genetics Testing Pty Ltd. All you have to do is follow the directions and post the sample.

3. The results will be sent to the MHAA Registrar, who will forward the results to the Member.

Notes:

Australian Genetics Testing Pty Ltd only deal with Breed Registries and therefore Members

cannot deal with them direct.

MHAA Charges Members the fee that is charged by Australian Genetics Testing Pty Ltd and do not receive any commission or added bonus for acting as an intermediary to assist Members.

All results are kept on file at the Australian Genetics Testing Laboratory, so that if you had DNA testing done with this lab and have mislaid the results, it is possible to obtain a copy of them.

All you need to do is contact the MHAA Registrar, Helen Klingberg.

If Members have had testing done and advised the MHAA office, but it does not appear on the Registration Certificate of the Horse that has been tested: they should send in their Certificates,

with a copy of the DNA results, to have the Certificate updated. If this is done before 1 August, 2012, there will be no charge. If sent in after that date, there will be an $11-00 fee,

unless there are other transactions taking place, i.e. upgrade, transfer etc.

Procedure to have DNA Testing done through Animal Genetics Inc, USA:

DNA Typing and Parentage Testing:

Since 1992 Animal genetics and its avian division Avian Biotech International have tested over

1.5 million samples.

Animal Genetics performs a wide range of assays including DNA typing, infectious disease

screening, genetic disorders screening, coat colour identification and genetic sex identification.

Our panel for Equine DNA Typing is based on the internationally accepted panel of microsatellite markers set up by the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) and 11 additional industry

used markers.

Our equine profiles can be compared with other labs using the international alphanumeric nomenclature.

Our panel of markers has an efficacy rate greater than 99.99% for detection of incorrectly assigned

parentage.

Our laboratories are staffed with highly experienced people who process thousands of DNA tests

from the United States and around the world.

Our crosschecking procedures for processing and recording ensure the highest level of accuracy

and quality control.

Procedure to have DNA Testing done through Animal Genetics Inc, USA: (Contd)

Equine DNA Profiling:

DNA profile, also referred to as genotyping or DNA Fingerprinting, creates a genetic code specific for

each individual. Individuals inherit two sets of genes, one from each parent.

A DNA profile is the inherited genetic information passed on by both parents to the offspring.

Parentage Testing:

Parentage testing establishes the degree of relationship between the foal, and the suspected dam

and sire.

DNA parentage testing can determine with extreme accuracy who is, or is not the possible sire or dam of a foal.

DNA profiling is the most accurate and reliable method for determining the parentage of any foal.

Use our online parentage calculator to perform your own parentage verification.

How do we do it?:

The principle bases for most parentage testing is ‗exclusion‘. An individual inherits one copy of each

gene from each parent.

When performing a DNA profile or genotype the idea is to compare a specific allele (fragment of DNA) of an individual with that of the dam and potential sire(s).

Any alleles of DNA found in the foal, which are not present in the dam‘s DNA, are concluded to have

come from the sire.

An assay of equine-specific markers allows for a DNA profile unique to that individual horse.

Each marker generates two alleles (bands) of a particular size.

A genetic analyser (ABI-3100) accurately identifies all 20 different STR markers.

When an allele is the same size, it is considered homozygous i.e. the foal has inherited two identical copies, one from each parent.

Where the two bands appear as different sizes, the individual is considered heterozygous, i.e. the

foal has inherited one specific sized allele from each parent.

Results are shown as Confirmed or Excluded as well as all allele sizes are indicated. In cases of

exclusion, all markers determining the point/s of exclusion are highlighted.

Cost: US$40.00 for single DNA Profile.

US$100.00 for Parentage Verification (Both parents and offspring).

Sample Collection:

Collect the sample by pulling (not cutting) 20-30 mane or tail hairs with roots attached.

It is important that you pull the hairs and confirm that the actual root of the hair is being collected.

The root contains the genetic material of your horse that is needed for DNA testing.

Therefore, cut hairs do not provide an adequate sample of your horse.

Place the collected hairs of each horse in a separate zip-lock bag or envelope labeling the bags

accordingly with the horses name or identification number.

Download and complete a submission form for each sample and send along with payment to

Animal Genetics for testing.

The Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss as of 1 May, 2012, printed in this issue of

Fine Lines shows our financial position as at that date. However, it should be

pointed out that while it reflects most of the National Show income, it does not reflect all of the expenses. Therefore it

may appear somewhat more buoyant, than it will when all National Show

commitments have been dealt with. A complete financial statement of the 2012

National Show will be tabled with all other financial statements at the AGM.

Working alongside the National Committee of Management, as our accounts reflect, we have considerably

reduced the expenses, however we do need to improve our income. To this end,

we do have to consider increasing some of our fees, so the we can maintain our

income level. As we, like all other equine groups are finding their income and Memberships are suffering due to the

general financial position Australia as a whole finds itself in.

For sometime we have been working on improving some of our accounting

practices, in particular tightening up a few areas that needed it and I am pleased to

advise Members that we have implemented some new procedures with

regards to debtor management.

As a reminder, those Members who

haven't renewed their Membership by August 1, will not be able to Upgrade Hors-

es, Register Foals, enter any Shows, vote, or hold a position on a State or National Committee. So if you haven't

renewed your Membership, you should do so without delay.

Association and as I always say, if you have any queries please don't hesitate to

AGM advance notice to Members:

Dear Members,

I am very honoured to have been entrusted to put together this National Show Edition of Fine Lines #82

and hope that I have been able to capture in the photos from the National Show, some of the excitement and great moments of the Show. As well as give you some interesting reading and portraying Members

stories through pictures from various Shows etc.

Thanks to Rebecca Harper, for putting the idea to us, we have introduced a new feature to Fine Lines,

called ―For The Love Of A Gelding‖. This works perfectly with our Gelding promotions and the introduction of Gelding Cash Bonus Awards at our 2012 National Show; as our aim is to highlight the

importance of Geldings and the valuable role they play in promoting our Miniature Horse breed. Gone are the days when inferior stock was the only male Miniature Horses that were gelded. In fact at

the 2011 National Show, both the overall Miniature Horse and overall Small Horse, were Geldings. Rebecca, from Excellence Academy, has written the first article for us, which is a great story about her

―Love Of A Gelding‖ and I must admit it brought a tear to my eye and I am sure that Members will enjoy

reading it. Members are invited to contribute to this feature in future Fine Lines editions, so if you have a Gelding

that is the love of your equine life, please put pen to paper and share your story with Members.

Member input is vital to a publication like Fine Lines and Members are invited to submit articles which

they think will be of interest to Members. Likewise if any Member has any ideas or suggestions for future features or articles for Fine Lines, please email: [email protected] or contact me.

Don‘t forget Members are also encouraged to send photos of their Foals and/or Horses. There is no charge to Members for their stories or photos, so why not send in your favourite photo or story that epitomizes

your love of Miniature Horses, just as Keeley Zammit (5 years old) has done; its a great little story.

We also need an Editor, so if you are interested, please contact me to discuss what the role entails;

Members are reminded that as per the Constitution, the Editor must be a Member of the National Committee. Even if you aren't interested or able to take on the position of Editor, but would like to

contribute to the magazine, please don‘t hesitate to contact me.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this edition of Fine Lines and in particular

Printer has to do any work on them, that‘s where extra cost is involved. As well as being submitted in the correct format, the adverts need to be a specific size to enable the printing and processing of the page for

What’s happening around the States __________________________ State Reports

Unfortunately Victoria has been without a State Representative for the past year, but thanks to a very dedicated group of Members, there have been a couple of Shows held, with some more planned.

We have a group of Members who we are willing to assist running some Shows and also have a Member who is considering the State Representative role. As soon as details are confirmed, Member‘s

will be advised, but in the meantime if you are interested in being part of getting the Victorian Promotional Group up and running, please contact Brian Neal or Barb Voysey.

Lines we have some great photos from the Kingston Show as well as the Victorian State Show, which was held in February at Tatura Park. Also in this edition are the results of the State Show.

Thanks to the Members who attended the State Show, as although small compared to previous State

Shows, it was a fun Show with a great friendly atmosphere and the biggest plus to the Show was the number of Members helping each other out and that always makes for a successful, fun filled event.

A BIG THANKYOU to Brian Neal for all his work both before and during the Show, for without Brian there would not have been a Show. Thankyou also to Ty Little for his assistance with the Show and to

all the Members who helped at the Show, especially Jayde Porta and Daniel, for helping pack up the performance gear, which was much appreciated, especially as they had several hours drive to get home.

WA STATE REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT

Hello to all Members,

Well not much to report from WA at this time of the year. Our show season is starting up again and

there are plenty of local shows to attend for those wishing to show. A big CONGRATULATIONS must go to Debbie Tucker and Michelle Avery for making the long trip over

East to attend the MHAA National Show. Well done on your results girls. It was great to have some people supporting WA at this show. I know Debbie and Michelle had a wonderful time and I know more

people are looking forward to attending next year. It is time for us to start thinking about our next State Show. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions

please contact either myself or our Show Co-ordinator Jayne Cruttenden. We are hoping to have more

classes available at our next show with the usual array of ribbons, trophies, rugs, prize money and gifts. If anyone would like to obtain some sponsorship it would be very much appreciated. The last few

years we have had the one major sponsor who has so kindly donated to our Show. It would be great if a few members could try and obtain

sponsorship. It doesn't matter how small as it all helps. Please remember if you have any ideas or suggestions please contact us as soon as possible.

Foaling season is not too long away and most people will be getting excited at the prospect of little hooves in their paddocks. We will be looking forward to the foaling season ourselves.

If anyone would like a write up about their Stud or a special horse in their life please contact me so we

can include it in the next issue of Fine Lines.

NSW STATE REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT

Members, As I write this report we come to the end of another term of the State Committee.

I would like to thank all Members of the previous NSW State Committee for all their hard work & en-thusiasm. Unfortunately holding a Committee position is often a thankless task, but our love of our

breed, the sense of accomplishment and helping to make a difference, I think keeps us all there. I would like to wish the incoming NSW State Committee every success in the future and do hope that

all Members will support and assist them in any way they can to make NSW a great State for the Miniature Horse Association of Australia Inc and the Miniature Horse Breed.

Recently we have received so much Member support, advice and encouragement and we thank you so

much for that. There has been some great and very much appreciated sponsorship offers, along with some great ideas for classes clinics and lot of helping hands and new ideas, all very gratefully received.

Let‘s all look forward to another great year ahead, please everyone keep that support up, sponsor where you can, or lend a hand with shows etc; anything you can do will be appreciated very much by

your hard working Committee. Remember we raise all our own funds, so the more you support the shows put on, the more we can do for you the members.

I would also like to give a special thank you to the small team who took their fantastic show jumpers to

SIEC to put on a demonstration for the big horse show jumpers. All the horses and Members in the team had only recently competed in the MHAA National show and

would have normally been enjoying a much earned rest, but they gave up some of their Winter break to travel down to support their Association and breed: thanks guys you did yourselves proud !

SA STATE REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT

Hi Members, With our 2011/2012 show season behind us I wish to take this opportunity to thank the

Members who have continually helped out at all our Shows – Daryl Smith for arranging to pickup and return the keys for the grounds and generally helping setup and pack up at shows, John Bailey (our

main tent putter upper), Alissa Klingberg for putting out ribbons and sashes and helping setup and pack up and Mark Sorensen with out whom we would have all gone very hungry.

A big thank you to all our Sponsors, without their input we could not continue to have such successful shows. This year we had two major sponsors – Kingston Horse Supplies and Jacksons

Miniatures whom sponsored our $50.00 vouchers for all Supremes at all our Feature Shows.

We always have an ―official‖ Photographer at our State Championship show to take photos of all the Champions, Grands and Supremes but unfortunately this year not all the winners took advantage

of this. To the outgoing Committee – thank you for all your input and hard work during the year.

I am sure Members, in general, are totally unaware of the work that goes into holding so many shows so please be informed that all your Committee have worked very hard during the year and for this they

should be commended. Not only have we organized shows but we have also arranged two days with

Bunnings – running BBQ‘s to fund raise. We still have a couple of events before this season is over – our Foal Show and the High Point

Dinner and Presentation. The Foal Show schedule is in this newsletter and also all the information with regard to the High Point Dinner. The High Point Dinner is a great way for all Members to get together

without having to worry about horses so I am hoping to catch up with all our Members at this Function. You should all receive a nomination form for State Committee soon, please think about nominat-

ing as the majority of your State Committee will not be re-nominating this year so if you want the shows and events to continue your State will need some new workers.

Show season in QLD is again under way. Wow what a thrill to see thirty something Youth competi-tors at the Kilkoy Show. It did turn out to be a fairly late day, but that is showing sometimes. The Youth

are such an important part of our Association that they deserve every bit of our support. For the future,

we are going to co-ordinate with the Show Societies and our Youth and hope that we will be able to pro-vide two rings for the Shows where there will be large numbers of Youth in attendance. It is just so

pleasing to see members willing to put up their hands and assist the Show Society with stewarding and our Committee with setting up performance equipment.

I am particularly happy with the mood of trust we have in QLD at the moment. Members are more and more able to put up their hands for volunteer tasks and we are achieving more and more as a ―group‖

that is how it should be done…..congratulations…. after all, if it isn‘t fun, why do it.

By the look of things QLD has once again put some great foals on the ground. The weanling classes at Kilkoy and again at Marburg had some really nice stock in them.

Really looking forward to our Futurities in May… at this stage it looks like we are dealing with some-thing like $10000 in trophies and prizemoney. This Show just gets better and better with each year and

this year we are adding the extra incentive of a $500.00 prize to each of the supreme Miniature and Small Horse if they are a Gelding. This is possible because of the work members have done particularly

with the Bunnings sausage sizzles. Oh yes, how good were the QLD results at the 2012 Nationals? Congratulations to every competitor from

right across the country…. but a special mention to the QLD Competitors, we are a proud lot up here

and very competitive, it is great to see QLD horses achieve so well on the National stage. My thought for the week at the Nationals was….‖ Anyone can carry success home, it is an easy load to

bear, however it takes a very special person to carry disappointment home with grace.‖…. I saw some very special people at the Nationals. It was a great Show and the atmosphere was as good as I have

MEET A MINI AT ‘JUNABEL’ !!!

A 5 year old’s view on having fun with Miniature Horses ... ...

The Horses weren’t sure about going into the water at first but after we got them to go in they liked it.

The first day I went to Junabel was the meet the mini day. There were lots of people, Miniature Horses and Foals. I decided that I wanted to learn more about Miniature Horses. Mum put my name down for more info. When Ang emailed me and told me they were doing clinics I decided to join in. I have learnt a lot. With out Ang and Mitch I would not know anything about Miniatures and I am having lots of fun learning. I can wash, clip, lunge, lead, groom, feed, put on their halter and rugs. I can even get them to stand up for the judge. I got to take them to the beach. I had lots of fun at the beach. I got the horse into the water and he liked it. I have lots of fun learning to train Miniature Horses and can't wait to have my own. Keeley Zammit (5 years old)

Another successful ‘ Meet the Mini Day ‘ was held at Junabel Miniature Horse Stud on Sunday 1st July, 2012 and we look forward to hearing all about it in the next edition of Fine Lines.

“Wildflower Destiny‟s Ooh La La” ( aka “River” ) was purchased from Wildflower Miniature Horse Stud in March 2011. After purchasing “The Artist” from Wildflower in 2010 and enjoying such great success across Australia with him I made the decision to approach them for another amazing halter horse of equal quality to “The Artist”. At the time I was actually in the process of moving to Queensland; however I phoned Luke just before Nationals and asked what was available in the way of top show filly‟s, but, my main prerequisite was that I wanted “Flashy”, black with socks or stockings for show ring appeal. He sent me photographs the following day and I remember him saying “This filly will go to the top but I do like people to come and look at them in the flesh first”.

Even though he was reluctant to sell her without me going to view her I made the decision that she was the one and I owned her by 5pm the following day. “River” is sired by the extremely beautiful imported Stallion “Rogers HSR Destiny‟s Almighty (IMP USA) and is out of the gorgeous mare “Fairyland Riverdance”. Her pedigree incorporates world class genetics on both the top and bottom including Alvadars Double Destiny (USA) Harris Polka Dot (IMP USA) and the immortal Boones Little Buckeroo (USA). She attended her first National Show in 2011 with her breeder and was awarded The NATIONAL SUPREME CHAMPIONSHIP JUNIOR EXHIBIT. I was absolutely over the moon at this point as all my dreams of “River” being the one were now confirmed.

As I didn‟t have my new barn completed until later in 2011 (due to the move) the next major show this gorgeous filly attended was the 2012 MHAA NSW State Championship Show and once again “River” garnered the top honours. She was awarded the State Championship in the Junior Filly division, then went on to be named the 2012 MHAA NSW State Grand Champion Junior Mare and to top it off was then bestowed the honour of the 2012 MHAA NSW STATE SUPREME SMALL HORSE HALTER EXHIBIT AWARD. Once again, I was elated with her success, so I then set my sights on the ultimate title on offer in this country, The National Supreme of Supremes.

I must thank my dear friend, Nicole Kelly of “Sapphire Park” for showing “River” so beautifully for the above titles, as well as my

close friends and her breeders Kay Burke & Luke Perrin of “Wildflower Miniature Horse Stud” for breeding such an

outstanding filly.

In April of 2012 I attended the MHAA National Show and all my dreams came true. After many months of tireless work and commitment, ”River” was named the 2012 NATIONAL SUPREME SMALL HORSE JUNIOR EXHIBIT and then went on to be be-stowed the most coveted title in Australia, the 2012 MHAA NATIONAL SMALL HORSE SUPREME OF SUPREMES. To add to this, she also went on to win a NATIONAL SUPREME SMALL HORSE AWARD in the Triple-O-Rama, to which I was even more excited, as it further backed up her National Show success.

Coming to the MHAA National show for the first time was such a great experience. It was really good to meet and get to know heaps of new people, to compete in the ring, and just to be there and experience it. Since I had never been before I didn’t really know what to expect, but it was great. I was blown away by the size of everything: the arena, the stables, and the beautiful grounds. Barb and Margaret and other Committee Members were really friendly and helpful and helped us to get organised. It was great to have Peter Scriven and all the Queenslander’s there too. The exhibitors are all so organised with their many horses. I couldn’t believe how many horses some people brought to the show. I know our truck fits 13 horses, so maybe we can do that too next year! I don’t actually own any horses, I am part of the ‘Berakah Miniatures Show Team’ at Nambour Christian College. I am in year 8, and have only been involved with Miniature Horses for one year. I came down with Fran (Show Team Co-ordinator) and Sarah to the National Show to help our team to prepare to bring a larger team next year. I am thankful to Lyn and Brooke Whitehead for the loan of “Riley” for my events. I was excited to place fifth in three events and fourth in one other. It was really challenging to get a new Horse the afternoon before you compete the next morning! Especially at the Nationals! It was such an amazing experience to come down and compete in the National Youth events. I am looking forward to bringing my own NCC Horse down next year. See you then

Jane Rienecker Year 8 Nambour Christian College .

On Monday the second of April, I arrived at Sydney International Equestrian Centre as a representative for Nambour Christian College. When first arriving at the Equestrian Centre, I was so amazed at the whole set up and facilities of the place. I dream of having such facilities at home, I particularly wished I had the cross country course in my back yard. Not having my Horse there was really frustrating because I’m used to being continually busy doing all the duties for him. Instead, I along with fellow Student Jane Rienecker, helped various people out wherever we could – cleaning stalls and exercising horse. We met lots of new people from all over Australia, even as far as Western Australia and everyone was happy and willing to help us out. The biggest challenge was using a Horse that you’ve never met before, that had been trained differently and responds to different commands. I had to learn how to communicate to the Horse so that it could side pass, pivot, lunge and jump in a very small amount of time prior to the events that I was in. I was so keen to do it as best I could in the Youth Events held on Wednesday 4th April. Overall, by the end of Wednesday’s events, I managed to achieve a 3rd in Youth Hunter and a 1st in Junior Judging. I didn’t do as well as I would have liked to, but I am thankful to the MHAA National Committee particularly Barb Voysey and Margaret Lawson for giving me the chance to participate at this year’s Nationals. Next year I’m looking forward to bringing down my own Mini, hopefully doing a bit better and having a heap more fun. Finally, I would like to say thank you to Justin, Troy, the Whiteheads, Tara and her Mum for helping us out and letting us borrow their horses.

It was an absolute pleasure having Sarah and Jane at the Show. They were so eager to assist everyone with their Horses, soaked up all the knowledge they could and were great ambassadors for Nambour College and we look forward to welcoming them back with their Horses in 2013.

NATIONAL SHOW CO-ORDINATOR’S BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE NATIONAL SHOW:

2012:

As those of you who attended will know. the 2012 National Show was a fantastic event, the atmosphere was friendly, relaxed and even people who didn't win were happy !! I think the overall feeling of the Members was to enjoy the Show, catch up with other

Members from around Australia, they don't see very often and show off their magnificent Miniature Horses to their best ability and they certainly did that.

A great hit were the Member bbq‘s which really are a great way to set a relaxed atmosphere

and we are indebted to Kerry Starling, Helen Cupitt and the band of helpers in the mess hall, with a special mention to the King Family who were also a great help. Our in house catering team also did the catering for our Saturday night function and wow

what a great job they did, much better than so called professionals who have served us in the past. Needless to say we will be repeating that again !

To our fabulous entertainers Scott & Shaz Crawford, what a great Show they put on for us, so THANKYOU SO MUCH from all the Members we loved your Show and by the way,

―Elvis‖ did a great job too ! We introduced the American Miniature Horse (AMHA) Classes for the first time this year

and they were very well received and many Members have indicated they would enter them again.

We also re-introduced the Amateur Owner Trained & Exhibited (AOTE) Classes this year

and they were also well received, with many Members indicating they would like to see them included in the National Show again, now that they know the criteria will be enforced and that only those eligible and genuine ―Amateur‘s‖ will be permitted to enter the Classes;

which is as it should be.

There is so much to do after the National Show and while I am still finalizing this years Nationals, we need to give some thought to 2013 and I have already had a lot of Member

feedback and just to give you some idea of these, I will list a few of the things that are being taken into consideration for next year. 2013:

AMHA Classes: re-arrangement of Judges - different Judge to National Show. Amateur Owner (AO): NOT Amateur Owned Trained Exhibited (AOTE) refine criteria.

Veteran Classes: Include Veteran Classes - change existing age groups. Re-vamp Sunday‘s Show: ? Not triple.

That‘s just for a start …. In addition a couple of exciting items to add … as you will see on the opposite page, the Harness events are going to be something very special .. … but wait

until you hear what we are going to have as a raffle prize ?????? Details are being finalized now and Members will be advised as soon as it is confirmed ….. You are going to

love it !!! Perhaps you would like to comment on the above and/or have some particular Class or

change to the Show Schedule that you would like to submit; please do so, but do it soon, as we will be working on the final National Show Schedule of Classes within the next

month or so. Member feedback, particular Members who Show, is vital to the success of any Event and is always taken on board for consideration.
