Publishers Note: November is my favorite month of the year with the the brisk breezes sneaking in at evening time and a nip of frost overnight in the mountains. I love the cooler weather, for adding more blankets on the beds, and getting the fireplace ready for winter use. I enjoy planning, decorating and baking goodies for for friends and family time; and making up my menu for the traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Digging out memories that go with the the decorations and creating some new ones is always fun! How our American Traditions came to be, are much like the diversity of all our citizens... a melting pot of ideas and stories; so rather than looking for flaws, let’s just add our own flavor to the pot! OH MY, HOW WE DO TRY to tell ourselves that ‘this’ Thanksgiving, we will not over stuff on all of the great food that comes our way during the holidays. Yet year after year, we always eat way too much and end up with heartburn. Or some of us, due to the stress of the holidays, end up with acid refl ux. For many years, my family has used a powdered form of Wild Yam root which sweetens the stomach acids up and we are not bothered by acid refl ux. Many folks who have tried it also report great results. Wild yam root (Dioscorea Villosa) has many outstanding attributes and uses. It has diuretic and anti-infl ammatory effects. It relaxes muscle spasms and when combined with other blood cleansers, it will aid in removing waste from the system. It strengthens the function of the gallbladder and liver, stimulating the fl ow of bile to the duodenum, a part

of the small intestine. It also lowers blood pressure (temporarily) and the cholesterol levels in the blood. All of this is good but we primarily use wild yam root for acid refl ux. We use the powdered root and put it into a capsule for ease in swallowing. Granny even used small portions of the root made into a light tea, to help colicky babies. We also use it as a natural steroid, with the ability to

relieve rheumatism. Native people used

it to ease menstrual cramps and prevent miscarriages. Indians also used it to relieve the pains of childbirth,

and it is reputed to be particularly helpful in relieving the nausea of the morning sickness so

often associated with pregnancy. Some folks claim that it equalizes the hormone imbalance and I know that it was used in the fi rst birth control medicine. I encourage you to learn more about Wild Yam root.

As I lay my head down for the night I wonder, what is going to happen? Will I find out that I’m going to meet a new friend, or is an old friend going to deceive me? Will I move or is someone going to move in with me? Dreams are full of unique questions and answers. Yes answers. Did you know that you dream about your future? I don’t have all the answers, but I can tell you that there is definitely something sublime in the works of dreaming. So, tonight, when you fall asleep pay attention to what you dream. And then pay even closer attention to your life and see if you get an “Ah-Hah!” feeling. If you do then your dreams may be telling you something about the future in your waking life. When they give too much advice, recognize it is out of love for you. Don’t get upset and respond in an ugly way. Use the grocery store tech-nique with their well-meaning words – take what you want, leave what you don’t. Getting angry and snapping at them with sharp words only leaves you both hurting. Show them respect by biting your tongue.3. Speak up. While showing your family respect is important, that doesn’t mean allowing them to take over. Remember you and your spouse and children are your own family. You have to decide what is best for you.

But when there is a need to speak to either of your families, let that fami-ly’s child be the spokesperson. If your spouse’s family is rocking the boat, let your spouse speak to them. The same goes for you and your family. It makes for better in-law relationships.4. Invest. Take the time to do little things to show you care. If your moth-er-in-law makes a special dish your spouse loves, be sure to tell her and ask if she will make it. It’s always nice to feel appreciated. Make time to do something special with your fam-ily. Depending on their interests, you could go golfing, shopping, hunting, or maybe have an old-fashioned sing-along at home. If any of you are game buffs, break out the board games. All of these activities are opportunities for the whole clan to bond. It’s an invest-ment that will yield a high return. Sometimes it’s the simple things that make a big difference. Stop and think about how you can create your best family holiday ever. You’ll be glad you did!
