MARION — TheHerdman children, andtheir tale of taking over aChristmas story, are back.

This weekend’s showingof “The Best ChristmasPageant Ever” at theMarion Cultural and CivicCenter will be the thirdfor the Paradise AlleyPlayers, said Joyce Hope, the group’s president.

The play is part of thetheater group’s five-yearrotation of Christmasshows performed at thecivic center.

“Every time we get anew group of kids,” Hopesaid, who is directing theshow. “They bring adifferent feel to it, eventhough the lines are thesame, these kids make the

lines their own. Our LittleAngle of the Lord ishilarious.”

About 20 children fromage 4 to 14 and eightadults make up the castthat will present the storyof the six Herdmanchildren.

Written by BarbaraRobinson in 1972 and laterturned into a popularmovie, the story centerson the six children knownfor being the worstchildren in history.

One place safe of theirantics is the church, thatis until the children learnthey can get refreshmentsat Sunday school. Butwhen they arrive, theyend up taking over thelead parts in the churchpageant.

Along the way, theylearn about the nativity

for the first time andapply their owninterpretations to itsstory, sharing with thecommunity a rediscoveryof the meaning ofChristmas.

“It’s a real kid show, buteven for people who don’thave children, it’s adelightful little story,”Hope said.

The Paradise AlleyPlayers is in its 39th yearof performing, openingthe community theatergroup up to the region forauditions. It producesfour performances a year, and also features aplaywright competition, aChildren’s TheatreWorkshop and a SummerLab Theatre.
