Athens will host from the 4th till the nth of October 2014 young talented opera singers from all over the world, who want to compete in one of the most challenging international competitions, and invites all music fans to attend the most esteemed artistic event of Greece. Cheryl Studer will be the President of this year's Jury Committee in Opera, that includes Sherrill Milnes, Dame Gwyneth Jones, Martina Arroyo, Christian Carlstedt -Casting Director rqq Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Peter Katona -Director of Casting of The Royal Opera (Covent Garden) and other prestigious members of the world of opera. The 3tIth Maria Callas Grand Prix will be held in the venues of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation and the Megaron-The Athens Concert Hall, with free entrance. Opera singers from all over the world can take part in the competition. The age limit for women is 31 years old and for men 33 and application must be sent by May 2gth 2014. After t w o years of silence the lnternational Maria Callas Grand Prix is held again. Athens

will host from the 4th till the nth of October 2014 young talented opera singers f rom all

over the world, w h o want t o compete in one o f the most challenging international

competitions, and invites all music fans t o attend the most esteemed artistic event o f

Greece.

Cheryl Studer wil l be the President o f this year's Jury Committee in Opera, that includes

The Maria Callas Grand Prix is an annual cultural event with global influence. It was

founded in 1975 by the lnternational Cultural Center Athenaeum and is a member o f

World Federation o f lnternational Music Competitions o f UNESCO. More than 1,800

artists f rom around the wor ld have competed during its 37 years and many o f the winners

are n o w enjoying an international career a t major opera houses and important concert

halls o f the world.

TERMS OF PARTICIPATION

A. PRINCIPAL RULES The lnternational Maria Callas Grand Prix in Piano is open to pianists of all nationalities up to 32 years old.

Al. An application form, properly filled out, must be sent by registered mail or e-mail - to the Secretariat of the Maria Callas Grand Prix, the latest by Januarv 20, 2015. The Secretariat of the competition will be housing at the ATHENAEUM offices: 3, Adrianou St., GR-105 55 Athens,tel.+30 210 3211987-49-fax.+30 210 3211196, e- mail [email protected], www. athenaeum. com.gr.

A2. Applications must be accompanied by: - a) Full contact details. b) Curriculum vitae. c) Detailed information on the musical studies of the applicant (schools attended, seminars, diplomas etc.,) as well as names of the applicant's music professors in particular during the last two years. d) Prizes won at international competitions (if any). e) Two letters of recommendation by musicians of international standing. f) Repertoire for solo piano. g) Repertoire with orchestra. h) Recent DVD (HD) with recent performance of the candidate. i) The overall artistic activity of the applicant until today. j ) Programs and reviews. k) List of the applicant's LPs, CDs or any other recordings, if there are any. I) Two recent photographs, size 9xl2cm (original, jpeg or pdf, in high resolution at least 300dpi). m) A photocopy of their passport or any other official document as a proof of their date of birth.

A3. The Direction of the competition will provide foreign candidates with a formal - certificate of participation, which may be used for the issuance of a visa.

A4. Pianists accepted to participate in the Maria Callas Grand Prix must report at the Secretariat o f the competition two - three days before the beginning of the competition.

AS. Participants must send all the required documents and the list of the works they - wish t o perform for the competition, by Januarv 20, 2015 at the latest. Please do take care t o give us the composers' names, full t i t le of the works wi th opus number and edition. Also participants should write separately the works they wish t o perform in the 1st Stage of the competition, as well as the works they wish t o perform in their recital. N.B. Participants who will not follow the requests of paragraphs A5 regretfully will - not be accepted t o the Grand Prix.

A6. All stages of the International Maria Callas Grand Prix can be recorded and - transmitted through radio orland television. Each candidate, provides his/her necessary acceptance to the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation and the Athenaeum International Cultural Center - irrevocable and without any claim for reword fee for the realization of above mentioned recordings and radio and/or television transmissions, as well as for the reproduction and circulation of any audio or visual material of such recordings for educational, archival, or for museum purposes through the deposition o f his/her bulletin of attendance.

A7. Pianists accepted t o participate in the competition must notify the Secretariat of - the exact date of their arrival at least four weeks before the beginning o f the GRAND PRIX. Otherwise the Secretariat cannot ensure any accommodation.

A8. Pianists who have been accepted but are unable t o participate in the MARIA - CALLAS GRAND PRlX are kindly requested t o notify the Secretariat within a reasonable time.

A9. The Direction o f the competition will not accept any changes in the program - after January 20,2015.

B. ACCOMMODATION B1. Free meals will be offered t o all participants and their accompanists at the - premises of ATHENAEUM, irrelevant to their success.

82. Free hotel accommodation will be offered only t o those singers who will - successfully pass at least into the 2" stage of the Grand Prix.

C. EXECUTION OF THE MARIA CALLAS GRAND PRlX - PIANO C1. The MARIA CALLAS GRAND PRlX consists of four stages. The sequence of the - participants' appearance will be in alphabetical order, this year starting from the letter M.

C2. All works should be performed by heart. -

C3. Composers not included in the competition's program requirements cannot be - selected by the participants.

C4. Pianists, who will not succeed to pass in the 2"d cycle, are entitled to ask the - President and the members of the Jury Committee for their advice and counselling on their performance.

C5. The decision of the Jury Committee is irrevocable. -

D. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Participants of the MARIA CALLAS GRAND PRlX must present a repertoire of seven concerts for piano and orchestra of their own choice, ranging from W.A. Mozart to the 20th century inclusive.

More specifically: a) Two concertos by W.A. Mozart and one concerto by L.V.Beethoven or vice-versa.

b) Two concertos out of the following: F. Chopin, nr. 1 and 2 R. Schumann, a min. F. Liszt, nr. 1 and 2 E. Grieg, a min. J. Brahms, nr 1 and 2 C. Saint-Saens, nr. 2 C. Franck, Variations Symphoniques P. I. Tchaikovsky, nr. 1 and 2

c) Two concertos out of the following: M. Ravel, g maj. S. Prokofieff, nr. 1,2 and 3 S. Rachmaninoff, nr. 1,2,3,4, Paganini Variations B. Bartbk, nr. 2,3 R. Strauss, Burlesque G. Gerschwin, Rhapsody in blue, Concerto in f. A. Schnittke, of 1960 & 1979 A. Scriabin, C# min. W. Lutoslawski, Variations on a theme by Paganini

A recital of a duration of 50'-55' min. that should include: a) One work by J.S. Bach b) One sonata by L.V.Beethoven, to be chosen out of the following: op.2 nr2 and 3, op.10 nr.3, op.7, op.26, op.27, op.28, op.31 nr 1, 2 and 3, op.53, op.57, op.81, op.101, op.109, op.110, op.111. c) One important work out of the following composers: F. Schubert, R. Schumann, J. Brahms, F. Chopin (The 24 Preludes and the 12 Etudes op. 10 or op. 25 are included - these works have to be performed in whole), and F. Liszt (we can accept a group of 3 Etudes Transcendantes or the 3 Etudes de concert or 3 Paganini etudes).

The works of the recital are performed without repetitions.

FIRST STAGE (Preliminary -duration of approx. 45', with piano accompaniment). The participants should present three different concertos of their own choice. (movements are acceptable) SECOND STAGE A 50' - 55' minutes Recital (See chapter Program, paragraph 2) THIRD STAGE (With orchestra) The Jury will decide the works to be performed in this stage (one complete work at least). FOURTH STAGE (Final - With orchestra) The Jury will decide the works to be performed also in this stage (one complete work at least). N.B. Participants should bear in mind that the Jury Committee may require from them to perform the whole work, parts of which they have already performed at the first stage.

E. THE JURY El. Members of the Jury will be international known personalities in music, from - abroad and Greece.

E2. The final stage of the competition will be attended by agents, opera artistic - directors and other persons involved in music and having interest to promote the careers of the young laureates of the Maria Callas Grand Prix.

F. PRACTICE AND ACCOMPANISTS The Direction of the competition will arrange for the participants the following: F1. Possibility of daily practice. -

F2. One hour's duration rehearsal prior to the lSt stage with an accompanist. - Participants wishing to have more than one rehearsal will have to undertake financially the accompanist's engagement.

F3. Participants may be escorted by their own accompanist, for whom the - administration of the competition will not undertake any financial or other obligation (fee, accommodation etc) except the daily meals.

G. NOTES G I . We kindly request of the participants, when sending in their application form, to - write clearly in capital letters or in computer, their surname, name, address and temporary address, tel. nr., e-mail as well as their program. Please use English, French, or German.

62. During the Grand Prix, the Secretariat will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to be - of service to the participants.

C2. Participants must specify on their application form the type o f their voice (soprano, - mezzo - soprano e.t.c.).

C3. All works should be performed in their original language and key. The sole exception - t o this rule will be those works which have been transposed into another key in internationally known editions.

Group A Arie Antiche composed by: Caldara, Handel, Monteverdi, Purcell, Scarlatti etc

Group B Opera arias composed by: Beethoven, Bellini, Bizet, Boito, Borodine, Catalani, Charpentier, Cilea, Debussy, Delibes, Donizetti, Giordano, Gluck, Gounod, Leoncavallo, Mascagni, Massenet, Mussorgsky, Mozart, Ponchielli, Puccini, Rossini, Saint-Saens, R. Strauss, Thomas, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Wagner and Weber.

Group C Lieder by: Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, De Falla, Duparc, Dvorak, Faure, Granados, Grieg, Mahler, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Respighi, Schubert, Schumann, R. Strauss, Tchaikovsky and Wolf.

Also Lieder by: Bartok, Berg, Berio, Britten, Copland, Dallapiccola, Hindemith, Ives, Milhaud, Pizetti, Poulenc, Prokofiev, Schonberg, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Webern

Singers must know thoroughly a complete leading role of an opera. To make your choice please see the list o f leading roles at the end o f 'TERMS OF PARTICIPATION". The Jury wil l ask parts o f this role t o be performed at the 2nd stage of the competition.

1'' STAGE (Preliminary) One aria from group A

Four arias from group B (arias of the leading role cannot be included) Four Lieder from group C

2nd Stage (Semi-final - recital) Five arias from group B (arias of the leading role cannot be included) Three Lieder from group C

At this stage, the Jury wi l l ask candidates t o perform parts of the leading role they have chosen.

Notes The arias and Lieder of 2nd stage must be different of those of the 1st stage. The arias and Lieder of 1'' and 2"d stages cannot be from the opera of the candidate's leading role.

3rd Stage (Final - with orchestra) Three arias from group 0, one of which must be by Mozart.

Notes The arias of the 3rd stage must be different to those of the lSt and 2" stage

One of the arias of the 3rd stage can be from the complete leading role which the participant has chosen. Participants are to choose for themselves the order of the works to be performed in all stages.
