Sustainable Cities Initiative catalyzes a new school for Springfield, Oregon.

The school comprehends people, place and context through environmental understanding and collaboration. Situated at the transparent edge of an urban growth boundary, the sentinel school serves to protect the surrounding natural landscape and the ample minds inside. The slope of the site is characterized by views to the new development, nature, and wetlands that surround it.

Stained cedar rainscreens, tactile concrete, omnipresent vegetation and clerestory glazing compose the building envelope.

Axial views allow for transparency. Transparency encourages sunlight to dance, wayfinding to guide, and surveillance to protect. Natural daylight fills every space. Each classroom is a transformative envelope redirecting light and air by utilizing passive strate-gies, moveable walls, and emerging educational technologies.

Landscape design and planting pattern integrate accessibility with park-like neighborhood access from the northwest, service entry to the northeast, allees of trees mark the western promenade, and the main entrance serves to the roundabout to the south-west. Panoramic views from the classrooms engage the outdoors and pavilion-style community rooms open to the inner atrium.

The school recognizes the disparate needs of the client, community, and society through unified deliverables and transformative multi-use spaces. Sustainable design strategies include water catchment systems and greywater reuse. Multiuse classrooms and commons use foldaway wall panels, light shelves, vegetated atriums, and LED lighting and projections to encourage immersive interactive educational environ-ments throughout the building.

In addition to solar power, the OSC incorporates a high performance double-skin envelope with geothermal heat exchange core system. Day lighting is maximized by the atrium. The building breathes through the stack ventilated atrium, double-skin louvered bays, and night flush ventilation. Responsible occupant behavior is encouraged by interactive visual building controls. These controls provide feedback allowing tenants to monitor and improve their patterns of energy use.

With 100% of its power needs met on site with solar energy, there will be no fossil fuel combustion or air pollution. Human waste is treated on site, and all gray water is treated on the extensive and intensive green roofs and infiltrated at levels to emulate the site’s natural hydrology. Every work station in the building will have access to natural daylight and operable windows. Indoor air quality will be improved by trees that circumnavigate the high-performance envelope in the building's double-skin facade.
