PERIODS Used at the end of declarative and imperative sentences, after an abbreviation, and after the initials in a name

COMMAS Used to separate a series of

three or more words and also to separate adjectives with equal importance in front of a noun

To set off the parts of addresses, place names, and dates

COMMAS Also used to set off words of direct address and parenthetical expressions. A noun in a direct address is the name of the person being spoken to. A parenthetical expression is a word or a group of words inserted as a comment not necessary to the sentence.

Also used to set off nonrestrictive phrases and clauses

COMMAS Also used to set off a direct

quotation or parts of a divided quotation.

Used before coordinating conjunctions when they are used to connect clauses in a sentence after conjunctive adverbs in compound sentences.

You can also use them after the salutation in a friendly letter and after the complimentary close in all letters.
