Onceuponatime3BillyGoatsGruffdwelledinanalpinemeadow.Theoldestgoatappearedpowerfulandmuscular.Themiddlegoatwasjustanaveragegoatbyanystandards.Theyoungestgoathadnotyetdevelopedsufficientlytoprotecthimself.

Theirmeadowwasovergrazed;thegrassnearlydepleted.However,alushpasturelayjustacrossthevalley.Unfortunately,togettoit,thegoatshadtocrossarickety,woodenbridgethatbelongedtoagrizzled,menacingtroll.Theyoungestbrotherapproachedthebridgewhiletheotherbrothershidandwaitedunseen.

In1953,EdmundHillarywasthefirstmantoclimbEverest,thehighestmountainintheworld.Hehadmadeanotherattempttheyearbefore,buthadfailedcompletely.Nevertheless,theEnglishhadrecognizedhiseffortsandinvitedhimtospeaktoapackedaudience.

Hillarybeganbydescribinghisdifficultiesand,despitetheapplause,saidthehefeltfrustratedandinept.Atonepoint,however,hemovedawayfromthemicrophone,wentovertotheenormousdrawingillustratinghisroute,andshouted:“Youmayhavebeatenmethistime,MountEverest,butI'llconqueryounextyearforthesimplereasonthatyou’vegotastallasyou’regoingtogetbutI’mstillgrowing.”
