n c e ag a i n i i n v i t e yo u t o j o i n u S t h i S S e a S o n for a variety of musical performances featuring our exceptional faculty artists, guest artists, and student ensembles. Whether your taste runs to the classical masters, opera, jazz, contemporary, or chamber music, we promise you something very special and exciting this year.

I am pleased to report that the extensive acoustical renovations to the Music Building Auditorium are on track and scheduled for completion in October. I hope you can join us when the auditorium reopens as the Cook Recital Hall in honor of Byron and Dee Cook, longtime friends and supporters of MSU and the College of Music.

In addition, major renovations to the Fairchild Theatre have begun this summer, converting the 75-year-old facility into a state-of-the-art venue for principal use by the College of Music. This major project is slated for completion by Fall 2013. These much-needed renovations will transform the playing and listening experience for our faculty, student musicians, and audiences alike. Visit our website – music.msu.edu – to see photos and updates on the transformation.

This season marks the third year for the Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series. Created by and featuring College of Music faculty in performances of chamber and solo piano music, the series will include four concerts focusing on specific composers: All American in October, Rachmaninoff in November, Mozart in January, and Brahms in February. At our patrons’ suggestion and due to the popularity of this series as well as the smaller size of the new Cook Recital Hall, we have established a reserved-seating policy for all of the West Circle Series concerts. Each of these four concerts will offer repeat performances – one on Sunday afternoons, and the next on Monday evenings.

The West Circle Series will conclude in March with the 13th Annual Cello Plus Chamber Music Festival offering a week filled with the music of Schubert, Beethoven, Bach, and Brahms. Come early to all of the West Circle concerts to hear preview lectures by experts who will discuss aspects of the composers’ lives, traditions, and techniques. You can read more about the West Circle Series on page 4.

Our popular Showcase Series – including our Collage concert, MSU’s Home for the Holidays, A Jazzy Little Christmas, and the Piano Monster concert – has become a popular annual tradition. This year we are introducing something different to the Home for the Holidays event – an interactive holiday party featuring excerpts from Strauss’ Die Fledermaus! More details are provided on page 8.

The college is grateful for the ongoing support of its many patrons and friends. To learn more about how you can enhance our efforts to prepare the next generation of performers, composers, music educators, and scholars, please see page 32.

Please join us this year in celebrating music and the joy it adds to our lives and community.

r 10/19-10/21Friday-SundayMSu opera theatre presentsKurt Weill: 2012 But the days grow short ... 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday3:00 p.m. SundayMSU Community Music School Auditorium, 841 Timberlane St., East Lansing. general admission. $20 for adults; $18 for seniors; $5 for students. TICKETS available from Wharton Center Box Office only, (517) 432-2000, (800) WHARTON and at the door.DIRECTOR Melanie HeltonWith twelve-piece orchestral ensemble

Long ago, the Mayans predicted that the world will end on December 21, 2012. But there have been many times in human history where the world seemed destined for disaster. Through the music of Kurt Weill, MSU Opera Theatre embarks upon its first experimental, experiential piece of music theatre. Audience members will be immersed in a theatrical experience where they will find it difficult to separate reality from theatre. Through Weill’s short opera Mahagonny Songspiel and songs from The Threepenny Opera, Happy End, Knickerbocker Holiday, Street Scene, and Lady in the Dark, among others, patrons will join in a journey from despair to hope, from isolation to community. Don’t miss this opportunity for a new and highly theatrical evening, featuring the stirring and beautiful songs of a composer who fled Hitler for the freedom of America. Sung in English. A preview lecture will be held 45 minutes before each performance.

This performance is funded in part by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc., New York, NY. 10/21 Sundayhaute ecole de Musique de lausanne String Quartet gueSt Recital 7:00 p.m. Cook Recital Hall, Music Building $ 10/22 Mondayconcert Band/campus Band7:30 p.m. Cobb great Hall, Wharton Center $gUEST CONDUCTOR

Join us for a whirling evening of mismatched lovers, old flames and wise old women in Stephen Sondheim’s Tony-award winning A Little Night Music. Based upon Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night, the musical unfolds completely in three-quarter time as it tells the story of an aging actress who longs to rekindle a long-lost romance. Recently both Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bernadette Peters revived the role on Broadway, singing the beloved hit, “Send in the Clowns.” Waltz away with us for a magical night where the sun never sets in the summer. Sung in English. A preview lecture will be held 45 minutes before each performance.

Riders can purchase tickets from the drivers. Riders should gather at the campus/southeast entrance of the parking ramp facing East Circle Drive and look for the vans with the Vivace Shuttle sign.
