Term Romanesque comes from the rounded arches and columns from Roman art

Roman Catholic Church established and strong = church construction

Better materials = larger buildings

Relief sculptures were common as most church goers were illiterate

Medieval art developed in France from Romanesque art and spread throughout Europe, especially Germany

Primary media: sculpture, panel painting, stained glass, fresco (Mural painting on fresh plaster with pigment and water) and illuminated manuscripts

Architecture is the key identifying feature and recognizably different from Romanesque styles
