ABOUT MIDDLEBURY

Geography & HistoryMiddlebury is a quiet and charming small townthat sits on the banks of the Little Elkhart Riverin the middle of a mix of rolling hills and ruralfarmland. Here you will find a plethora oflocally-owned stores that have been in thesame families for generations along withpicture-perfect Queen Anne and GothicRevival homes.

Before the Europeans came to the region, theMiami and later the Potawatomi ruled the area. That changed in 1832, when the first settlerscame from Middlebury, Vt. They chose thisspecific area because the rolling hills remindedthem of Vermont.

Later, in 1841, the first Amish families came fromSomerset County, Pa., and settled in the coun-tryside surrounding the town. The Town ofMiddlebury was chartered in 1836, and was final-ly incorporated in 1868. In 1888, the railroadcame to Middlebury and began todiversify the town's economy to includemanufacturing as well as farming.

Today Middlebury is a town of 3,420 located inElkhart County approximately 35 miles east ofSouth Bend, 130 miles east of Chicago and 165miles north of Indianapolis.

Conveniently close to major highways, railwaysand airports, where residents can have access tonearby urban centers of culture, entertainmentand higher education without giving up thesense of belonging and the ability to unwind in apeaceful setting.

Home to one of Indiana’s most popularRails to Trails Conservancy projects, thePumpkinvine Nature Trail of Middleburysees more than 88,000 passes each year -the highest usage in all of Elkhart County. The 17-plus mile trail system, coupled with five distinct town parks, means you can enjoy recreational activitiesyear-round.

Middlebury’s growing network of bicycletrails and parks connects people to theplaces they work, shop and recreate.Employees commute to their factories andbusinesses. Children stay active in thegreat outdoors. Bikers, hikers and runnersget a workout. Bird watchers search forwildlife. Families take leisurely trips to localparks and ice cream shops.

Krider World's Fair Garden Park (est. 1934)This garden is hailed “the crown jewel” ofthe town’s park system with good reason. The garden, with its ponds, giant toad-stools, windmill and English tea house, is apopular picnic spot for area residents and astop on the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail.

The park is a legacy to Vernon Krider, whose nursery was the town’s largestbusiness for nearly a century gaining famewith its patented thornless rose. Due toKrider’s thriving mail order business, thetown eventually had to build a new postoffice to handle mail traffic from the business.

In 1933, the company constructed anelaborate garden at Chicago’s Century ofProgress exhibition (gaining them around200,000 new mail order customers). Afterthe fair ended, the gardens were broughtback to Middlebury and replanted on 2.4acres. Now more than 80 years old, thepark recently underwent a number ofrejuvenating projects by the Town ofMiddlebury.

*Names and locations of all the parks andtrails may be found on the Town Map onpage 24-25.
