About Middlesbrough

HeritageThe world’s greatest explorer Captain James Cook was born in Middlesbrough and is commemorated at the award-winning Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Stewart Park. There are tributes to him throughout the town from the museum itself to the Bottle of Notes sculpture in Centre Square and even to the name of our superb James Cook University Hospital.

Of course no visit to Middlesbrough would be complete without visiting the Tees Transporter Bridge experience. This masterpiece of engineering is the only operating bridge of its type in England. Opened in 1911 it was designed to allow the masts of large sailing ships to pass underneath. The iconic structure has undergone extensive improvement thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund to include a newly installed glass viewing lift to the landmark’s upper walkway, an extensively renovated gondola and improved Visitor Centre.

Middlesbrough is a vibrant university town and the commercial hub of the Teesside region. The town has a proud industrial and engineering heritage uniquely represented by the iconic Tees Transporter Bridge.

Today the town is undergoing a transformation and an unmistakeable buzz lls the air. A positive momentum is redening the area’s future. Plans aren’t just in place, they are happening as we speak.
