On 2 November this year the Retire@Midstream residents were the proud hosts of the President of SA Bowls, the Protea mens and ladies bowling team, the Northern Gauteng and Sables teams, as well as a multitude of other bowlers in the region. The func-tion was held to mark the occasion of the opening ceremony of the new indoor bowling rink at the re-tirement village.

TherinkisafirstforSouthAfricawherebowlsispre-dominantly played on lawns whereas competitions in Europe and Australia regularly take place indoors. Chris Smith from Bondev welcomed the guests to Midrand Estates and Debra Fergusan, the president of SABowls,expressedherappreciationforthedevel-opment opportunity presented to the sport through the unique facility. Fittingly Debra then rolled the

first bowl and declaredthe rink open.

During the course of the evening the Northern Gauteng teams did themselves proudbyfirstdefeatingSablesandthennarrowlybeatingtheNationalteams.Theuns Fraser, the head coach at SA Bowls who assisted in the planning of the facilityexplainedthattheimportedcarpetpresentedplayerswithasurfacethatran true and slightly faster than lawn with the bowl running at 15 seconds in-stead of 12 to 13 seconds over 30m. Whilst the increase in speed presents a challenge to men it brings the game within the ambit of the lady players where less strength is required to roll the ball the required distance.

In the end the greatest advantage lies in being able to play bowls in the shade without interference from weather conditions. An additional bonus – to be able to play at night under the lights! The RAMs club (Retire@Midstream Bowling club) will form part of the Gauteng Northern District and will be established in the new year. Leslie Stolterfoht, a Grade 9 student at Midstream Col-lege, did everyone proud when he was chosen for the U/15 Blue Bulls Invitational team earlier this year. He played for the Bulls at the Interprovincial Tourna-ment held in Bloemfontein between the 2nd and 8th of October, where the U/15 side beat the Dur-banSharksinthefinal.

Leslie previously represented the Blue Bulls U/13 Craven side as well as the U/14 Invita-tional Blue Bulls side in the previous two years.

Rob is a resident in Mid-stream and has asked us to post a request to dog lovers. He says that he quite frequently sees dogs fouling pavements and lawns in front of resi-

dents’ houses. The estate House Rules dic-tate that dog owners must keep their dogs on leash when outside their private property, and that any fouling that may occur whilst the dogs are taking their daily walk needs to be picked up.

Who will ever forget the year 2010 when the soc-cer world cup came to South Africa? The scholars will most probably only remember the extendedholiday enjoyed by them! Others will remember theSouthAfricanflagwhichbecameahouseholddisplay item across the globe, and of course, the introduction of Soccer Fridays. Would it be possible to eclipse 2010? The cover pages of our newsletters provide insight into what took place this year.

Locallythebiggeststoryoftheyearhasbeenthetrafficcon-gestionthathasbecomeanunwelcomeexperienceinthemor-nings. The good news of new roads being constructed was car-ried in the August edition when readers were also introduced tothelocaltrafficofficialswhohadbeentaskedwithprovidinga friendly service to alleviate the pain. As the new roads were completed they were opened progressively and after a tempo-rary delay, construction work on the section to Nellmapius in Centurion was started in earnest during October. Completion oftheroadsisexpectedinFebruaryof2012.

Construction work pertaining to infrastructure has also been a national priority with the Gautrain and the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project being completed in 2011. The Gautrain began operating in the latter half of the year and whilst we are

all enjoying the newly completed freeways, we are holding our collective breath awaiting the announcement of the toll fees. Locally, construc-tion work on a number of facilities was com-pleted in the year, these being the new medical wing with the day hospital, the indoor bowling facility which was opened by the National Protea bowling team and the new church building of the Kerksondermure congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church.

During the year, through the medium of the newsletters, readers were introduced to the parks within the estates (estimated at almost 100 hectares in size), birds found in Midrand Estates (which we now call the habitat we share with others) and a regular feature on the local weather station. With part of our habitat in-cluding a shopping centre, in an edition readers were introduced to the local service providers and merchants.

Jesus Christ was born into this world to reconcile humankind to their Creator, whether we take this opportunity is up to us but everyone has that opportunity, nobody is beyond the reach of the Hand of God.

Simply put, all of us are sinners, all of us are broken, all of us are incomplete, we are shadows of what God intended us to be. So God sent His own Son into the world to give humankind the most comprehensive and awesome insight into their Creator and His love for His Creation.

Incredible promises ‘behold, I make all things New.’ In the Old Testament ‘I will restore the years the locusts have stolen’ simple English, even those wasted years, before I met Christ, can be used for good once my relationship with Him and my

deepest need for Him is acknowledged. Now the challenge! Does this mean once I have acceptedJesusintomylifeeverythingwillgofine? Some promise this, but it is notmy experience.Storms are part of life. Family, work, school, varsity, friendships and Faith itself all experiencestorms. Being Christian does not mean the end of the storms, but it does mean that through the storm I have a Hand to hold that will lead me, guide me, encourage me and most of all, never let me go.

Real faith for real Men and Women of God. A God who is relevant to all areas of my life. 9:00 Sundays at Midstream Methodist Church you are welcome to share and learn more about this Friend who is Closer than we once ever dreamed possible.

PS no service 1st January 2012. Note the Watchnight Service at 18:00 on the 31st December 2011. Have a blessed Christmas and an awesome New Year!

The group of Midstream travellers departed from OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday 25 Septem-ber 2011. Upon arrival at Heathrow the group made theirwaytoStratford-upon-AvonviaOxfordwhereeven the old universities were found to be interesting. They were treated to various productions every evening which included The Merchant of Venice and Macbeth. The next stop was Venice, wherethe hotels, sights, sounds and nightlife was fascinating. Rome stood out, however, be-cause of the Colosseum and the Vatican City. As the tour guide Tim said as the group returned home, “Let this trip not be the whole adventure but rather have whet the appetite and turned the firstpageinyourpersonalbookofad-venturous travels.”

The Annual general meetings (AGMs) of the various HOAs normally take place towards the end of each year. This year the meetings were again characterised by lively debate and a good turnout of residents. ThefinalAGMforMidrandEstateswas scheduled for 25 November and at the date this newsletter went to print the results of the new board was not known.

1. Midstream HOA

More than 400 residents attended the Midstream AGM which took place on 25 October at Midstream College. It was announced at the meeting that Genl Suiker Britz had resigned as Es-tate Manager and that Jan Zeederberg had stepped down as Director. Follow-

ingaquestionfromtheflooritwasconfirmedthatintheinterim, the Estate Manager’s functions would be divided between Etienne Begemann and Paul Meyer.

In line with House Rules the HOA introduced a system whereby Directors would be elected on a rotational basis for a two year period. Seven residents made themselves available for the four available positions on the Board. The vote took place by ballot paper and in the week follow-ing the AGM the Auditors announced the following mem-bers had been elected: Koot Myburgh, Etienne Hefer, Ken Greve, Lewis Mathieson, Louis Botha, Hennie Vermeulen and new to the board, Naudé Klopper.

2.MidfieldHOA

The well at-tended AGM for theMidfieldHOA took place 1 November in the commu-nity hall of the Re t i r e@M id -stream HOA. The HOA is chaired by André Oberholzer who was re-elected to the Board unopposed, along with Chris Smith, Jan Rhood-ie, Deon Louw, Riaan Botma and Jan Zeederberg. Only one nomi-nation was received for the vacant position on the Board and Rapula Modibane was duly elected.

3. Midlands HOA

The auditorium at Midstream College was the venue for the Midlands HOA AGM which took place on 15 Novem-ber. Several nominations were re-ceived for the four available positions, and the elected Board for 2011/12 will be Chris Smith, André Oosthuizen, Jan Zeederberg, Petrus Theron, Pieter Engelbrecht, Riaan Botma and Thinus du Toit.

With almost 170 houses currently under construction, and a large number of open stands, a great deal of the dis-cussion at the meeting revolved around building related topics.

Withoutexception, theHOAs reportedanexemplarysecurityrecordwiththelimited incidents which took place relat-ing to either vandalism or theft of minor building material on construction sites.

In addition to the above, the following matters were reported on at the re-spective meetings.

Most of us always seem to be in a hurry and then seem to forget our responsibility of safe driving. The Estate boasts and encourages safe-ty on all levels, especially where children is concerned. We strive towards a child-friendly environment, where children can walk safely, ride their bicycles and play.

Although the emphasis is mostly on the vehicle- and motorcycle drivers, our “cyclists at play” and pedestrians need to follow traffic rules to ensure everyone’s safety as well.Parents need to educate their children to ensure their safety on the estate roads, sidewalks and pathways.

The law states that where there is a pavement, no pedestrian should walk in the roadway. Pedestri-ans are advised to use pavements where available. Where there is no pavement, walk as far as possible to the right-hand side of the road, facing oncom-ingtraffic.Onecannotbesurprisedbysomethingcoming up behind you – and if any-thing looks dan-gerous, one has enough time to step even further

away from the road. It is safer to cross the road at a marked pedes-triancrossing,buteventhen,donotexpectdriv-ers to stop for you. They may not notice you; or not watching properly. Always remember to stop, look for turning vehicles from ahead and behind you andmake sure the traffichas stopped before you start crossing.

“See and be seen” is always the rule for crossing the street [whether by foot or bicycle].

Our [more responsible] adult drivers [and especially our learner drivers], need to be cautious of pedestrians and cy-clists within the estate. Abide by the traffic rules and speedlimits to ensure accident-free roads. The general trafficlawsapply–donotspeakonyourcellphonewhile driving, be alert and be safe! The House Rules dictate that only licensed vehicles may travel on the estate roads – thus no golf carts or quad- and pit bikes – and that vehicles must be under the control of licensed drivers.
