ACTIVITIES COLUMN

Tony Megowan

Welcome to 2018! I hope everyone had a good holiday season. For January, we have the Mullin Automotive Museum on the 13th. We will plan to leave the Vons parking lot in Ventura (off of Seaward Ave) with a drivers meeting at 9:00 AM with a departure at 9:15 AM. Tickets are $15.00 and must be pur-chased ahead of time. We will plan on the 10:00AM tour. The tickets can be purchased online at https://mullinautomotivemuseum.tix.com/Event.aspx?

EventCode=996839 . This link will take you to the right date and time for the tour. Please let me know when you have purchased your tickets. Afterwards we will drive to the Collection in Oxnard and have lunch at the Annex. This is a collection of dif-ferent restaurants from burgers to Pho so there should be something for everyone.

For February we will have the run to Dodger Stadium on the 17th. It is the third oldest stadium in baseball behind Wrigley Field and Fenway park (the oldest). We are going to do the 2:30 PM Clubhouse Tour. The cost is $53.00. We will plan to leave the Vons parking lot in Ventura (off of Seaward Ave) at 11:30AM (drivers meeting at 11:15 AM) so that we can see the 60 Years in L.A. Exhibit prior to the tour. The tour will take about 2 hours and we will plan an early din-ner afterwards. For those of you who wish to attend purchase your tickets online https://www.mlb.com/dodgers/ballpark/tours and let me know when you have done so. On March 10th we will have Wino’s Gone Wild Under the Wisteria at Thore’s

humble abode. We are going to make this one a little more interesting. The wine will be a Sangiovese that is NOT from the US (think Italy). We will order pizza’s (the wine’s Italian, of course we are having pizza) and will also have desserts and appetizers for your din-ing pleasure. Remember on July 21st we will have the Fillmore and Western Railway Mur-der Mystery Dinner. If you plan to attend this event you will need to have a check payable to CCSB to me no later than May 1st, 2018. I still need some volunteers to lead some of the runs. I will give you as much guidance and support as I can so it will make it a lot easier for you to lead and plan the run. And again, because of the NCM Caravan, this will be my last year as your Activities Director. If you want to try your hand at it, let Mike Christenson know. Again, I will not leave you on your own and I will give you as much help and support as I can.

This year, we were privileged to be invited to Frank and Barbara Lo-Monaco's home for our annual Christmas Party. During the weeks

before the event, I was checking the 10 day weather forecast daily to see if rain was predicted. We were planning to use their outside seating in addition to the inside seating for the event and the possibility of a wildfire in our mountains and foothills did not occur to me. In the week before the party, it was touch and go as to whether or not it would have to be cancelled. As the fire progressed thru Ven-tura County and then toward Santa Barbara County, the ash began raining down. Frank and Barbara went to work on developing in-door seating for the event and were able to accommodate everyone inside their home. It all came together with the extra effort and it was a memorable occasion. Thanks again to all for helping overcome the challenging environment, espe-cially Frank and Barbara! Now, we are all waiting for a big rain to wash down the ashes and let us get back to our Runs and "Runches".

Member Highlight: Ed Clerkin—GM HISTORY: 1955-57 CHEVROLET BEL-AIR

In 1955, Chevrolet completely redesigned its stodgy fleet with their 'Motoramic' look for the new year plus they brought back the Bel-Air moniker for its upscale model lineup. Exhilarating performance and a flamboyant, confident and colorful style were what made the 1955 Bel Air coupes, convertibles and station wagons stand out among the crowd. General Motors cars from 1955 to 1957 became so popular (especially post production) that it garnered the nick-

name 'Tri-5'among Chevrolet aficionados. Styled by Ed Glowacke and overseen by Harley Earl, the Tri-5 series is without a doubt some of the greatest styled vehicles that ever came out

of Detroit. GM also met a major production milestone: A 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air sport coupe rolled off the Chevrolet assembly line in Flint, Michigan on Nov. 23 as the 50,000,000th car produced by General Motors in the United States. Just look at the production

numbers above for the 1955 model year. The new Bel-Air was also selected as the Official Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500 race on May 30, 1955. [Editor Note: I tried to Photoshop Sandy and Pat in the front seat of that ‘55 Indy Pace Car but it just didn’t work out] Along with its restyled body, Chevrolet (thanks to Ed Cole) also introduced the most legendary engine in

GM history - the small-block V8. It was a 265 cu in engine with a standard 3 speed manual transmission (optional powerglide

automatic) that pumped out 162/170 HP depending on the trans-mission selected. An optional “Super Power Pack”

V8 engine pumped out 180/195 HP depending on the transmission selected. Of course, the stand-ard I6 engine was available as well with a con-servative 123/136 HP depending on the trans-mission selected. For 1956, Chevrolet continued with its fresh styl-ing but with minor changes to the dash, grill and front/rear body details. 1956 was also the first year of GM campaigns on occupant safety that included rear door safety locks for the kiddies or feisty liquored-up adults in the back seat, a con-

cave steering wheel to absorb body impact in the event of a collision (never mind that there was a 4-foot-long steel rod behind that steering wheel ready to skewer the driver), padded dashes, pad-ded sun visors (I have never understood the point behind padded visors but maybe because seat belts were not mandated at that time and occu-pants would be bobbing around like dumplings in chicken soup during an accident), panoramic front windshield and rear window glass, unob-structed side views due to pillar-less coupe de-sign and break-away dash knobs. Completely coincidental of this article is the December 2017 Car & Driver magazine offering this summary of the 1955 Chevrolet and safety.

There was also a slew of options carried over from 1955 that included power lift windows, power brakes, power steering, air-conditioning w/tinted glass, AM radio w/wonderbar signal seek/conelrad station indicators and automatic volume control, V8 engine w/4 BBL carb, two-tone paint, tissue dispenser, door handle fingernail guards, rocker panel chip guards...the list goes on and on. The 1957 model year introduced even more chrome and the introduction of rear fender fins. The original 265 V8 engine (162 HP) was still available but now several high-performance options using a new 283 cu in engine could

be ordered with a single 4 BBL carb (185 HP) or dual 4 BBL carbs (245/250 HP) or the new for ‘57 Ramjet Fuel Injection (270/283 HP) dependent on the transmission selected. 1957 was by far the pinnacle of the Tri-5 Chevrolet series and very popular – even today. The Bel-Air Nomad wagon, although not as popular as the coupe, is actually quite rare today for all 3 years.
