IN EVERY ISSUE

Page 4: Mike O Mag

never imagined I would be writing a “Letter from the Editor” or for that matter, living the life that I have right now. My fiancé, Mike, and I have been navigating this photography business and letting our opportunities lead the way. Somehow, the road led us to creating

Mike O Mag, and I am so proud of how this first issue has come together. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have been up to, and especially looking forward to hearing your feedback. Our intent is to keep our readers up-to-date with what is going on in our business, as well as cover other photography-related topics. Fortunately for us, you can photograph just about anything, so we will be talking about a variety of things. In order to keep things a bit more organized, we will try to narrow it down so we have a theme for each month. Being that the “September Issue” is the most sought after issue for most fashion magazines, we felt it was only appropriate to focus our energy on fashion photography this month. Which, by the way, is one of our favorite styles to shoot. As anxious as I am for you to start reading, I wanted to give you a brief overview of what is to come. There are a few sections that will be staples, and I wanted to give you a background on what they are and why we have included them. One of my favorite sections was a last minute addition called “Instagram Inspiration.” I can’t tell you how many amazing photos I’ve seen on Instagram that were taken with an iPhone and tweaked with their simple filters. I’m inspired by so many of them and wanted to share those photos with all of you. With their permission, we pulled some of the photos we were most inspired by and pieced them together for you to enjoy. We left their names on the bottom of the photos, so feel free to check them out and continue to follow along. The contributors’ page…. This issue would not have been possible without the help of these ladies. This section will always be so important to both Mike and I. We are honored to have so many amazing friends, family, and coworkers support us and trust in our vision. The contributors included in this issue are more like team members. We work with them regularly, and will continue to do so. They rock, simple as that. However, we are always open to working with new people and would love to use this platform to showcase other artists’ talent. Please reach out if you are interested and would like to collaborate. As stated earlier, I can’t wait to hear your feedback on specific features, articles, and the magazine as a whole. We are not just looking for a bunch of praise. (But please send that, too! LOL) We are also looking for your hard-core critiques. Tell us if you think something was garbage and not worth repeating. Let us know if we got our facts wrong, or if you have a better way to capture a photo or explain a process. If you agree with us, but you have more to add to a topic, fill us in. All of your glorious feedback will be duly noted and some of it, good and bad, may end up in the “Reader’s Viewpoints” section of the next issue. I’ll wrap it up with just a few more things to look out for in each issue. We will always showcase a Model of the Month. The featured models will come with interesting stories to back up their pretty faces. Make sure you test yourself with our Mike O Challenge. If you succeed you will be able to take advantage of the money saving prizes. Lastly, we will close out each issue with the “Look Again” section to showcase one of our before and after photos. I can’t thank you all enough for taking the time to check out our premier issue of Mike O Mag. I hope you enjoy what’s included in this issue and can’t wait to show you what is coming in the next.

MODELS WANNA KNOWHey there! I’m so excited about the first issue and seeing what it’s all about. I would love if Mike O Mag talked about what professionals expect on the job. Not just modeling, but music, design, makeup etc. Also, what a photographer expects from a model or any client they work with. I would love for you to keep me

informed about upcoming castings, not just here in Chicago but other cities as well. I’ll be keeping an eye out and I can’t wait to follow along.

Willow StarChicago, IL

TALK PHOTOSHOPFirst off, I'd just like to say how excited I am for the first issue! I've been following your work for what seems like forever, and am so ecstatic to see what exciting things will be compiled in this online work. If you get a chance, I was wondering if it would be possible to include a workflow in one (or all :)) of your issues for one of your photos from SOOC (straight out of camera) to the finished project?!? It would be great to be able to see the work that turns out such brilliant photos! Ok- I look forward to the first issue. Like I said, I'm a huge fan--- and I'm sure soon to be a loyal reader of the new Mike O. Mag.!!!

BRING ON THE FOODI am really excited about this new magazine! I know you guys enjoy great food. What I would like to see are photos of some amazing looking dishes. They could accompany reviews, feedback, even photos submitted by your readers with details of where to buy or the recipe for how it’s made. Okay, now I’m getting hungry. Bring on the food photos!

POSTPRODUCTION MAGIC" I simply can't wait for the debut issue of Mike O Mag. I have been a fan of their Facebook page and absolutely love when they post new images. They have such a fresh twist on their images that it really gives them an innovative presence among the photography crowd. I would love a small section that illustrates (but doesn't give away the magic) your camera settings. Maybe

include post production tips on how you could make your images look like something out of Mike O Mag."

Christopher Otto SundeMinneapolis, MN

CREATIVITY AND MOTIONWow! That is great to hear that you guys are doing an online magazine. I can't wait to check it out! Me… I would like to see pictures of models, of course. Both abstract and contemporary. I would also love to see pictures of the great outdoors. Another thing I would love to see is images of artist in their elements. Creativity in motion if you know what I mean.

Charles OyegokeDallas, TX

I’M JUST EXCITEDI've been watching Mike grow as a

photographer from the beginning of his career and I can't tell you how thrilled I am with the

progression and now a full on editorial magazine! It's definitely one to keep up with!

Sora ConnorNew York, NY

I WANT IT ALL I'm very excited for the new online magazine Mike O Mag! I love to look through magazines that display artistic and original photography. I love Mike's style of photography and design and I'm glad I will have access to it. I would like to read about some of the step by step process and how he develops an idea into the final piece. Other things I would like to see in the magazine would be: make-up tutorials, nightlife/restaurant recommendations in different cities, seasonal fashion and even book, music and movie reviews. I'm excited to start following.

Nicole’s makeup artistry is showcased in almost every photo throughout this issue. If you haven’t noticed already, she is REALLY good at what she does. Mike and I are so used to having her on set, it doesn’t feel right when she is not there. In addition to making sure so many of the models seen in this issue are flawless, she also offered up a few makeup tips on page 20. As much as we want to keep Nicole all to ourselves, we know there are a lot of other faces out there waiting for her magic touch. She has worked on a number of celebrity faces, a whole lot of brides, and clients heading out to a wide variety of special nights and fancy events.

Annie played a major role in this issue by conducting our feature interview with Chingy and our Model of the Month interview with Bambi. Annie is an HR Professional by day / comedian and writer by night. She spends a lot of time listening to and telling peoples’ stories, so we were so glad when she agreed to work with us. She was the logical choice to both get, and share, both of their stories with all of you. We were so happy with how well the stories were told and can’t wait to work with her again.

Changing your hair is so much easier than changing your wardrobe. I wanted to pass along the tips I’ve been sharing with my clients, to all of you. The overall theme of my 1-2-3 plan is keeping your locks low volume and under control. So let go of your light, bouncy summer tresses and get grounded with these heavier looks for fall.

Blunt, Bold, and Bossy.I love my layers, but this fall be

brave with a full heavy bang. Clip-on bangs let you switch things up without the commitment. You can

rock it bone-straight with the use of a ceramic flat iron to keep hair smooth from root to end. Or go

BOLD and add waves to your hair by twisting hair overnight and

releasing in the morning.

Parts and Ponies.Ponies are always a fast way to change

up your hair with little to no effort! This look has been all over the runways and for good reason. Make a deep side part and gently apply a conditioning pomade

around your nape and edges. Use a boar-bristle brush to smooth your

strands back. Wear your pony just below the crown for the ultimate grown and sexy look! So remember to keep your

part deep and sleek, and your ponytails long and slick, this fall!

Wrap it up. A scarf is always a super chic

and oh-so-trendy way to refresh a hairstyle! Take a

scarf (preferably satin), twist it and tie it around your head like

a headband. Have fun by mixing up colors to add an

artistic touch to any ensemble!

“Shannon was the first model to shoot that day and we were running a bit

behind schedule. By the time she was out of hair and makeup we only had about 20 minutes to shoot before she had to leave for work. She stepped on set and said something like, ‘It’s all good! I’ve got this. We can get this shot.’ I love that attitude and she

didn’t disappoint one bit. When she left if felt like a tease. I hope we get the opportunity to shoot her again.

She really knows how to work a camera.”

Mike O

“Shannon’s smile was as bright as her dress! She is definitely a natural on

“When I saw Natalie, I instantly fell in love with her long hair. She mentioned that she really never had extensions, so I decided to give her a long, luxurious ponytail. And to give it a little funk, I decided it tease the ponytail to make it exotic, yet fashionable. For the second look, I made a

simple bun with the ponytail to make it simple, yet elegant.”

Jamal-RashadHairstylist“I had such a hard time

deciding what Natalie should wear because she looked

amazing in EVERYTHING! She transitioned with such

ease between the beauty and edgy looks. I can definitely

see her images on a ‘She’s In Color’ Billboard ad.”

" I had an amazing experience working with everyone on this shoot! Very professional, patient, and clear on their vision for the

outcome. Mike and Naomi were absolutely wonderful to work with and I will definitely be going back to them for future projects. Thanks to Aaja and everyone else who had a part in

selecting me and I look forward to working with the entire team again soon"

Natalie King

“Natalie stepped on set and all eyes were on her; which I’m sure is no different than anywhere she ever goes. Everyone will look at her because of

her natural beauty and stature. However, they will stare because she has that “thing” that comes

from inside that you can’t really describe. It’s that “thing” that I wanted to capture in her photos.

Her headshot is one of my favorites from the whole shoot. We were so struck by her effortless beauty and we knew right away we had captured exactly

what we were looking for.”

Mike O

Page 16: Mike O Mag

“It’s always a little scary when a model tells you it’s their first time, especially when we are

working under strict time constraints. However, as soon as we started clicking away we

gave a big sigh of relief. We immediately noticed she was

very photogenic. Although we could feel her nerves in the

beginning, she slowly relaxed and her pictures came off

confident and relaxed. She did a great job.”

Jamal-RashadHairstylist

“As the lights flashed, I learned not to be nervous, but instead just to be my natural self. Thanks to an amazing team, I was able to do exactly that. I felt beautiful and strong. This is a day I will never forget.”

                               Marissa  Kendrick

“Marissa was the last model up after a long day of shooting. Before she stepped on set,

Naomi and I looked at each other and said, ‘We have to

keep our energy up for her.’ We wanted to make sure she got the best of us. Little did we know we

would pull all of our energy from her. She worked the set like

a seasoned champ. We kept shooting way after knowing we ‘got the shot.’ We didn’t want it

to end.”

Mike O“Her first words to me when she sat down was ‘wait let me go wet

my hair.’ No one had ever said that to me at any photo shoot I

have ever done. She was nervous that I couldn't tame her hair, but the finish product was SHEER

BEAUTY.”

1 - minuteMakeup Tips for a quick fix in or less.

MULTI-TASK YOUR MAKEUP

When you only have 1 minute to make a difference using one product with two great uses is the

best way to maximize your time. Tinted moisturizer with an spf is the ultimate makeup multitasking tool. It will moisturize your skin while lightly covering blemishes. Make sure you are

using one that has spf included. Protecting your skin from the sun is key! While using your fingers to rub a quick coat on your face

WILL work, taking the time to pull your foundation brush out will definitely give you a much cleaner, more even, coat. If you haven’t already settled on your chosen tinted moisturizer, check out Bobbi Brown's cosmetic line. It’s oil free and

includes that oh, so, important spf 15. It can be found at Macy’s for

roughly $42.

Touching up your eyebrows can make a huge impact on your appearance. In less than a minute you can frame the face & define the eyes by slightly filling in your brows. Starting at the top of the arch, use light strokes to begin filling in your outer brow. Try using a clean mascara wand after you fill in the brows to help groom them. If you have more than a minute, I recommend stopping by a Benefit Cosmetics Brow Bar. They will give you a professional recommendation for the brow shape that will work best for your face. If you don’t have time to swing by the “Bar” every time you need a touch-up, just grab their Brow Zigs shaping kit for about $30, and you will have everything you need at home. It’s natural, the brushes are easy to use and I really love the setting wax. Your brows will last all day!

Eyebrow Bump

Page 21: Mike O Mag

WIGGLE WHILE YOU WORKWe all know that mascara is a quick way to enhance your look. But did you know that wiggling the wand is the key to the perfect application? Start by placing the brush lightly against the root of your lashes. Then, wiggle the wand side-to-side so your eyelashes start to nestle in between the brushes of the wand. Continue to wiggle as you push up and pull the wand towards the tips of your lashes. The wiggling will help to achieve a thicker lash look by coating the roots, which is the key. If you move quick, you should have plenty of time to close your eyes and pull the wand through the top of your lashes to remove any clumps before your minute is up. There are a lot of mascaras out there and different kinds work better for different reasons. For an overall great mascara I recommend Maybelline Volum' Express Mega Plush mascara. It will add volume and looks amazing with just a few coats. You can find it almost everywhere including CVS and Target for about $6.

A Bronzer Brush Is A MustOkay, I guess it’s not a must. Any soft rounded blush brush will do. However, a bronzer brush has more bristles that are more tightly packed. This style of brush will allow you pick up more color with each swipe saving you time, and is definitely worth the splurge. Bronzer applied to the apples of cheeks, enhances your skin tone. Try the Ecotools Bamboo Bronzer Brush. You can grab one at Target for less than $8.

As the day wears on and you see oil starting to peek through your perfectly made up face, don’t be so quick to grab your

powder. Instead, try grabbing blotting papers. You may find that the blotting papers are more than enough to do the trick. If you still need a bit more help controlling the shine after the papers, then powder away. By removing the excess

oil first with the blotting papers, it will prevent your powder from looking cakey. I’ve found the Shiseido Pureness Oil-Control Blotting

Papers to be very absorbent. They are sold at Sephora for $18.

DON’T Shine On

Page 22: Mike O Mag

Chingy not only killed it in the photoshoot, he also sat down with us to talk about his natural

swag in front of the camera, his muscles, his new mix-tape and what’s next in his thriving career…

in and out of the music industry.

Page 23: Mike O Mag

ANNIE: One of the first things the Mike O team noticed during the photoshoot was that you are really comfortable in front of the camera. Was that something that came natural to you from the beginning or has it gotten easier for you over time?

CHINGY: The key to me being comfortable in front of the camera is just me having confidence and being comfortable with myself and who I am. Whenever I do a shoot, I always want the photos to come out nice and look beautiful. It’s just natural for me to really focus on doing what I came to do – make the pictures turn out beautiful so that when people see them, they will naturally be interested in whatever else I am doing.

ANNIE: Have you always had this confidence from the beginning?

CHINGY: Back in the days when I was in groups, I was always doing photoshoots, so I have been building up that confidence over the years and learning on my way up.

ANNIE: Do you enjoy photoshoots or do you think they are just part of the routine?

CHINGY: I have no problem with photoshoots. It can get nerve racking if there’s too much going on and you’re doing them back-to-back, but I really enjoy doing them and seeing the different creative avenues that the photographer or I can take with the shots.

ANNIE: At one point during the photoshoot Naomi said “You look like a beast right now.” She said it really stuck with her which is why the cover says “He’s Beastin’ While You Are Sleeping”. This title was given to emphasize not only your muscles, but also how aggressive your hustle has been in the industry lately. First, I want to hear more about what the ladies are

talking about: your muscles. Where did the muscles come from?

CHINGY: I just wanted to get in shape. I have been working out for the last 5 or 6 years and it just became a hobby and something I grew into and I kind of started taking it seriously. I’m not getting any younger, you know, so I am all about staying fit and the muscles just come with it. With any sport that anyone does, they want to learn how to get better at it, so that’s what working out became for me. I figured I am in a business where it doesn’t hurt to look your best.

ANNIE: More importantly, you’ve been in this industry for so long and

you were a beast and you are a beast. People may not understand just how aggressive you are being right now. Tell us about some of the things you have going on right now.

CHINGY: I’m working on a new mix-tape called Chances Make Champions. The gist of the mix-tape is a little self-explanatory from the title, but basically you gotta take risks and build some things to get what you wanna get.

Sometimes you play your best to get ahead, you win some games, you lose some games, and sometimes you don’t win the title in the end, but you gotta try again. Chances Makes Champions

is saying to keep taking those chances and you will become a champion. On the tape there are some party joints and I’ve got some records on there for the ladies. There is a record titled You & Me explaining my career. I’m talking to the fans, but I put it in the form of a woman, but people will understand it when they hear it.

ANNIE: I know you are using one of the photos from our shoot as the image for a single coming out soon. Will it be from this new mixtape?

CHINGY: Yeah, it’s from this mixtape and it’s called “I’m Hurr” (I’m Here). I am using one of the photos from your photoshoot for the release. It’s about a

relationship with a lady who cares for me, I care for her and the story is us saying “let’s go around the world and have some fun and enjoy life and feed off of each other.” It is one of those ‘chic’ records that I’m famous for.

ANNIE: Well we can’t wait for the release. I’m excited to hear it! Tell us more about what is keeping you busy.

CHINGY: I always have a lot going on. I’m working on my next album. Even though I don’t have a title or anything

yet, it’s coming – I just throw mix-tapes out there every once in a while to let people know I’m still working.

I also have some performances coming up. I am always on the road and overseas. It’s nice overseas. I am just appreciative that they always accept me so much over there and keep me coming back. In a week and a half I will be touring in Japan. I am working on doing a European tour and I know at some point I am going to do some dates in Africa.

ANNIE: Outside of your music, I have heard some rumors that you are expanding into other areas of business as well. Maybe alcohol?

I have been

building up that

confidence over

the years and

learning on my

way up.

CHINGY: Yes, actually I am also partnering with a group called Phoenix Brands where I am the face of Shpilka Vodka and also part owner as a business venture. I am in a business where alcohol matters. I go to festivals, clubs and everywhere I perform, people drink, so I thought “why not?” I’ve always had a dream of having my own beverage, whether it was an energy drink, soda or a vodka, we are just getting it off the ground and are going to keep pushing it. The name of the liquor is Shpilka, which means “Stiletto Heel” in Russian. Made in Russia, it’s a premium vodka with a premium taste for a premium price. It’s real

smooth… dangerously smooth to be honest. When people taste it, they will definitely understand what I am talking about.

ANNIE: Yes, you have a lot of things going on. Where is the best place for our readers and your fans to keep up with you? What social media gets most of your attention?

CHINGY: Actually, you can hit me up on Instagram or Twitter @chingyjackpot. My label website is Fulldekk.com. Really, those three places to keep up with what is going on with me.

The art of editorial fashion styling is such that you want to captivate your audience upon first glance. Most flip through magazine pages at a rapid pace, but a good editorial photograph will jump out from the page as you analyze it from top to bottom.

The first key to editorial fashion styling is determining a major focal point that every other element is based upon. In this look that I call "The Glam Sophisticate," I selected the Haider Ackermann wool and silk-blend jacket for its clean lines and rich hue.

Keys to Remember:

Whereas fashion options for women seem endless, men's fashion can be classified into a few simple styles. Because of this, men's trimmings are essential in creating the mood and feel of a look. Using pieces from British High Street's fashion emporium, Topman, I created "Man Homage" with some of the season's hottest trends infused with Aztec Indian influences.

ANNIE: You have such a unique name, so I am sure people ask you all the time, but how did you get the nickname Bambi?

BAMBI: My beautiful mother gave me the nickname “Bambi” the day I was born. She said the first thing she noticed was my big, slanted eyes and extremely long eyelashes which reminded her of a beautiful deer, so she called me Bambi. My given name is Marcelon, so growing up it was hard for people to pronounce, so I just stuck to Bambi and I have strongly identified with the name my whole life. Although I go by my birth name in my professional life, the name carries so much of me and my character that I chose it as my modeling name to make sure it sticks with me through my career.

Also, while I was doing the Mike O photo-shoot, someone said to me “Oh my gosh, your legs are so long. Now I know why you’re named Bambi!” So now I guess you could saw I embody the Bambi name from head to toe!

ANNIE: Bambi is such a unique name, how do you feel about other people who go by Bambi?

BAMBI: It used to be a very unique name! Now with social media people are starting to name themselves Bambi so I see the name Bambi being used quite often.

When I think of Bambi I think of delicate, strength, beauty, big beautiful eyes… The name is something that is near and dear to me so when I see someone who is “hard” or doesn’t fit the Bambi prototype, I get kind of

frustrated. To me, these personas take the whole meaning out of what Bambi means to me and can rub me the wrong way because I feel it takes the credibility out of the name.

ANNIE: Tell me a little of your history with modeling and photography. How did you get into it?

BAMBI: I started modeling in 2000/2001. I can always remember my grandmother, my mother and my father would always tell me how beautiful I was and that I should be a model. I have always been tall and very thin (the typical model prototype), so along with

finishing my education, it was always something that I wanted to pursue. It wasn’t until my best friend called to tell me about a supermodel search in Kansas City, MO, that I said “I will go if you go with me”. She agreed and so together we embarked upon a grueling 2-day journey that included lengthy interviews with two different judges, walking the runway and some snapshots to show our potential. I wish I could say the rest was history, but when they chose the models at the end of the second day, I was devastated to find out I wasn’t one of them. It was my first exposure to a modeling search, and also to being rejected. I was feeling dejected and declared I would never do it again, but clearly that did not last long.

I am not a person who gives up easily, so when I received a call from my hair stylist a couple weeks later telling me that there was someone looking for models, I decided to give a second chance. Following that opportunity, I started to get more calls for fashion shows, and other modeling gigs, and have been hooked ever since.

My father was supportive of my modeling but also encouraged me to get an education and just do modeling on the side. I took his guidance, have a bachelor’s and master’s degree, and currently have a great career in HR consulting. I had taken a few years off of modeling to focus on my career, and am just getting back to it. I can already feel momentum picking up again now that my name is back out there.

ANNIE: I understand you are looking to get into styling. What are your plans on growing as a stylist?

BAMBI: Fashion is my passion, and while I am going to keep modeling for as long as people will book me, we all know that looks can only last so long and a pretty face isn’t forever! Knowing that I want to stay tapped into this industry, I have started to pursue my other passion – styling. Fashion is a statement, and unfortunately when people see you they perceive you based on your appearance. So, one must be passionate about their appearance and how they look, and I would love to help others find that.

ANNIE: What are your thoughts on Photoshop?

BAMBI: I am all for Photoshop. It is used in every magazine, on every print ad, and as you’ll see in my “Before & After” pictures in the back of the magazine, it is a powerful tool when used in moderation. What I am against is overdoing it and using Photoshop to totally transform a picture and strip the model of all her natural features.

Models work hard on their bodies, and it is a lifestyle you have to commit to in order to ensure you are fully prepared for a shoot. I work out regularly and eat everything from Kale to Broccoli and every berry and antioxidant that I can get my hands on. It is a lifestyle that is hard to keep track of, it is expensive, but it is what every model should strive for so that when it is time to take a picture and have a photoshoot, the need for Photoshop is minimal so you don’t have to be faced with a total transformation in the picture. Also, everyone is built differently. There are different shapes, forms and skin tones – you are chosen to be a model because of your uniqueness, so if I am chosen because of that and then I am photoshopped and given bigger boobs, or a smaller nose, it’s not me anymore and it’s just not natural.

I am excited about the Before & After feature because they had to do minimal, if any, Photoshop to my pictures. What I want the world to see is the beauty in the natural shot and that you don’t have to change it for it to be beautiful. I can’t wait to see the reader’s reactions!

Check out the photo on the next page to see if you can spot the changes.

This was one of our first “big” photo-shoots almost exactly a year ago. Emily, Mike, & I drove to a throwback, drive-in diner, ordered burgers and casually pulled out our camera. Before getting to deep

into the shoot we asked the employees if it was okay. They smiled and watched as we pulled out flashes and umbrellas, and proceeded with multiple wardrobe changes. This was also the first time we would

work with Nicole from Flawless Beauty. This photo-shoot marked the start of two wonderful friendships.

Look Again

The amount of retouching that was done to her face and body was so minimal you would need a magnifying glass to see the changes. Nicole did an amazing job of contouring her

whole body with shimmer making her appear plastic without any additional work in postproduction.

The two major differences you notice are the color enhancements and the extra hair added for a touch of drama. Look again, folks. Your eyes are not playing tricks on you.

This is why Photoshop is NOT a requirement for Bambi.
