In almost all oases it causes a

little irritation, at first, to find thatsome one else wishes to share theprofits of a trade hitherto carried onby one alone, but, gradually it isfound that competition means an

increase of businessthat bothparties, old and new, gain by it, as,the greater the facilities, the morebusiness will be done.

Sometimes, however, either one ofthe two wishes to oust the otherentirely and thus obtain a monopolyof the business. Now, unless a

monopoly is in the hands of theGovernment, and thus under thecontrol of the people generally, ithas been found to be injuiious tothe public and even to the mono-

polist.The best condition that a country,

an industry, a business, or a politi-

cal party, can be in, is to have a

strong opposition. "Competition is

the life of trade."

Ayi Ion, delivered at theKoyal Institution on 15th Match,that on the Portrush Railway to theGiant's Causeway, in Ireland, ntramcar diiven by electricity iuiissteadily at 10 miles an hours, "anilbut that the speed is limited by Actof Parliament, could easily do 25miles.
