Winds of Change

What an amazing world! Advances in technology are happening so quickly that they cause constant changes in our businesses and professions. Yet about one-third of the world's population is still

living at a subsistence level with little change in their lives. It is a stark contrast and a cause for concern.

Rotary has both a distinguished heritage and a bright future. My primary task as president is to enhance the vitality and viability of Rotary clubs and to enable them to succeed in the midst of societal changes.

Wind of change was a new and significant phrase when I was a Rotary Scholar in South Africa in the early 1960s. It is serendipitous that the phrase that was first publicized in my host city of Cape Town is now applicable to Rotary as we contemplate the changes in society that dictate some corresponding changes in our organization. The phrase is now better known as winds of change.

Rotary lives and breathes in our 33,000 clubs, and it is the clubs that improve lives by Building Communities-Bridging Continents. If we succeed in helping clubs to become Bigger, Better, and Bolder in the next year, then it will be clear that the best days of Rotary are still ahead. We are fortunate to be Rotarians! The other day after my routine morning walk at 5.30 a.m., I plonked myself on a sofa at my terrace, to soak in first the local news and then, the editorial of my favourite English daily. All of a sudden a sparrow perched on top of the parapet on my roof caught my attention. From a distance it looked like a female. Soon her companion alighted from nowhere and sat next to her. Together they both chirped for a few seconds before they flew and settled under the prolific Quisqualis (madhumalti) bough. I must have spotted a sparrow after a long time. It was reminiscent of my childhood and a reel started unfolding in front of my eyes. I used to come back from school every day from March through August to see a number of sparrows feeding on wheat grains which were washed and spread on a sheet to dry before they could be ground into flour. Their “cheencheen”, and the sight and sound of almost hundreds of sparrows flying away fluttering their wings on hearing our footsteps defies evanescence of childhood memories. Their solidarity was inimitable. When I actually looked around, I spotted a pair of “bulbul” and appreciated their distinct whistle, a full throated “kooo” of “koyal”, the heavy husky sexy voice of “mayna”, and the staccato of a woodpecker. A parrot and a blue bird flew past my terrace and a pair of pigeons sitting at my neighbour’s roof top was moving its adam’s apple as if in a flurry. Amidst all the soft and high pitched sounds were the piercing unmistakable cries of crows. To me it appeared as an amalgamation of tweets and chirps, and whistles and coos and guturgoons into a soft soothing music…a mellifluous one at that. I felt as if I had known these for ever, been with them, grew up with them. Their plumage was so familiar because as kids we used to name a bird by its feathers and beaks. Dull brown sparrows and larks, dark brown red whiskered bulbul, yellow and black mayna and robin, the unmistakable green of parrot, the long beak of woodpecker. Most interesting of them was a flycatcher because it would deftly pick up the flies in its beaks and we as kids would be intimidated. The slender bodied kingfisher, lovely blue bluebird, dark koel, baya, and so many more…. Their names were coming to my mind with stark familiarity and fluency. I was able to discern one’s plumage and tweet from the other. I was mesmerized by the richness of nature.

The eclectic mix of baritones started resonating and to me it was like a philharmonic! I was wondering if these melodious vibrations from the vocal chords of these avian experts had been there all the while and I was oblivious to them, or, I was listening to them without actually hearing, or these birds took a fancy to my terrace that special day?

Why did I fail to perceive the enchanting background music for so long? Why was I not able to appreciate that pleasure was around me until today? Perhaps, in the rigmarole of life and to win a rat race, I did not give a moment to myself, to stop and listen and see and regale and relish and savour………………………… this nature’s splendid vernacular!!

I inadvertently was reminded of “Leisure” by William Henry Davies.“What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare. ...”

- Ann. Dr. Rashmi Kapoor

When the country started the Go Green campaign how could R.C.K.G be left behind. The New Rotary year started with the celebration of "Rotary Van Mahotsav" which was organized all over our Rotary District 3110, under directions of D.G. Rtn. P.P. Singh.

We in our drive planted Plants of Chandni & Har Shringar in the 1st Phase of Tree Plantation at Bal Grah (Boys) in the morning at 8.30 A.M. It was pleasant to find many Rotarians at a rather early morning hour at the venue, which shows that members of our club, are not only aware but very poised for the cause of mother nature and ever ready to fight the ill effects of pollution and green house gases.

Looking Back – And Smiling!

Rotary Year 2009-10 has ended, and RCKG remains the foremost club in Kanpur for its social and charitable activities, a recognition which makes us all proud !

It was just one year back when we had completed a very successful Rotary year 2008-09 under the leadership of Rtn Rajiv Agarwal. At that time, there was apprehension whether the momentum of that

year could be sustained, or better still, increased. With the standard being set high, it was a challenge to think that we could do better.

Looking back, I think there is a sense of satisfaction of a job well done. Not only have we been able to maintain the high standards of the club, but have set higher standards for future Presidents to aspire for. So I hope that President 2010-11 Rtn Sanjay Choudhary is able to reach the pinnacle of achievements.

Though there are many things that I think made the year unique, I would like to only share some of them with you :

• Annet Wing – I believe one of the biggest achievements this year has been the start of the Annet Wing. RCKG truly became one big family once the children started being involved in all activities. The six exclusive events that were solely for the Annets such as the Harry Potter movie, Annet Counselling, the Chetan Bhagat evening, Bowling competition, the A-Team movie etc. all made them a valuable part of the club. The portrait of each Annet on their birthday (which was managed by First Lady Ruchi Jain) made each of the children feel special and remembered. My hope is that the Annets will fondly remember this year and Vipul Uncle !

• Fellowships – The fellowship events this year were taken care of by the Ann Wing. Under the able chair of Ann Nandita, the fellowship events were each different, outstanding and the talk of the town. Certainly responsible for getting even sleeping members excited !

• Bollywood at the Installation – Shatrughan Sinha as the Chief Guest at the installation gave the club immediate recognition, and good publicity amongst the Rotary fraternity.

• MILESTONES – the 12 issues of the Club Bulletin were a runaway success with the members, and were highly appreciated by the other Rotary clubs in any gathering. All kudos to Editor Ann Kiran for the superhuman effort in bringing out these 12 quality issues! Though the 12 issues have been done once before in RCKG (in B&W), print in colour and the quality were outstanding this year.

• Ann Wing - The exclusive six meetings of the Ann Wing with Ann alone was also a new start, and gave the Anns an opportunity to do things which were of their interest. The Coffee with Nandita capped the six meetings.

• Board Meeting with spouses – Made the Board meetings less formal and increased the attendance.

• Holding Board meetings at members' place and dinner meets – not only did this make Board meetings something that people looked forward to (in the week), the importance of being a Board member went up hugely !

• Start of a Presidents Club – A new exclusive Presidents Club has been started by the name of 'Gr8pc' (read Grapes), which will meet once in a quarter. It is hoped that this club will make the President's post that much more sought after.

• New Members Directory – Released after a gap of so many years.

• Creating the post of mentors – In the Board, Past Presidents were given the post of mentors, and all other positions were given to members who had never been Presidents, thus encouraging newer members to participate in positions of responsibility.

• Awaking sleeping members – Except for a couple of members, all members participated and contributed during the year. Wonderful fellowships were a reason, but a bigger reason was that they were encouraged to participate. Anyway, nobody can say 'No' to Ann Nandita, at least not easily !

• Emails – Replaced the written circular almost permanently. Reporting was done within 3 days, along with the photos of the event.

• Every Anniversary was remembered by a personal gift by the President and First Lady.

• Starting of the Pacemaker program – which had been the identity of RCKG in its initial years. It was restored to its past glory by the funds for the program being given by the club, and Regency Hospital. A total of Rs 3.6 lakhs was spent on the 6 pacemakers implanted.

• Adoption of the Boys Bal Grah – the new Community services project this year. Spent more than Rs 3.5 lakhs this year on a new room and reconstruction of the Bal Grah.

• A very first time New Years Eve program – which was an outstanding success ! A feather in the cap for the team this year.

• A trip to Jim Corbett – Nobody thought that the huge distance would look so small ! Four evenings together, and still the Rotarians could not get enough of it !

All the above activities were not in isolation but in continuation of all the programs that RCKG is known for. The TB Clinic continued its good work, and we were able to comply with all Rotary Foundation norms, something which is unique for Rotary clubs in India. The Girls Bal Grah continued its monthly activities. There were other contributions to charitable activities such as the Garbage Bin placements in Railway Station, and literacy programs (Spastics Center, Boys Bal Grah, Girls Bal Grah). These all activities had their foundation in the huge fund raising done this year in the play “Teri Bhi Chup Meri bhi Chup'.

I believe all of the above was possible due to the unprecedented team work in the club. The responsibility shouldered by the team members, the complete freedom of team leaders within their sphere of activity and their willingness to actively perform their duties, all this has resulted in the success of the year gone by or Rotary Year 2009-10 ! The district has recognized the overall performance by bestowing 11 Awards on the Club !

At the end, I do not want to name any individual member since the list is too long. But I have to thank the First Lady Ann Ruchi Jain for her ever willing, strong and silent support. For a President, the old adage should be read as 'Behind every successful Rotary President there is a supporting First Lady”. All so true ! Also, I would be missing some important persons who need to be remembered – my children Annets Shubhi, Nehal and Vatsal - for their understanding and encouragement during the year. The Annet idea was theirs and theirs alone !

Looking back, I am surprised by all the achievements, coupled with the fact that I do not feel a sense of fatigue. I believe the credit for this goes to you, the members of RCKG. I hope that the year 2009-10 will be remembered not only as a year that all the members were proud to be RCKGians, but also by the fact that RCKG rightly deserves to be called as the best Rotary Club in Kanpur.
