A recent Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters finds that just 41 percentnow believe it is possible for the United States to win the nearly nine-year-old war inAfghanistan.

More to the point, a plurality of 48 percent now say ending the war in Afghanistan is amore important goal than winning it.

Meanwhile, 53 percent of those polled by Newsweek disapprove of how Obama ismanaging the war a sharp reversal since February when 55 percent supported Obamaon Afghanistan and just 27 percent did not.

(Put another way, the percentage of Americans who disapprove of Obamas Afghanpolicy has nearly doubled in four months.)

The same Newsweek poll finds that 46 percent of respondents think America is losingthe war in Afghanistan (26 percent say the military is winning).

Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan predicts that conservatives may start to

    peel off as well.

Not Washington policy intellectuals but people on the ground in America, she wrote thisweek. There are many reasons for this. Their sons and nephews have come back fromrepeat tours full of doubts as to the possibility of victory, whatever that is, as we all nowsay.

Noonan continued: The other day Sen. Lindsey Graham, in ostensibly supportiveremarks, said that Gen. David Petraeus is our only hope. If he cant pull it out, nobody can. Thats not all that optimistic a statement.

At three different New York City commuter terminals five different troops wereoutreached - all National Guard.

The first pair of soldiers, a sergeant and companion private, were reluctant to takematerial offered (handout from last outreach: Sir! No Sir! DVD, business card [seebelow], Traveling Soldier newsletter [http://www.traveling-soldier.org/] and a Querido

Camilo DVD). The sergeant explained, although knowing me (us) from armoryoutreach, that he never accepted anything, saying that, having signed a dotted line, acommitment had been made that was not to be counteracted.

Our viewpoint was understood, however. The private, throughout the sergeants lengthyexplanation, looked directly ahead and said not a word.

The next day found another sergeant-private combination more receptive.

Again, the sergeant knew me from previous commuter outreach and gladly accepted thehandout and Sir! No Sir! This non-com had, with a smile, accepted a card weeks(months?) ago.

The private also accepted the same material with thanks and confirmed he was Spanishspeaking, while also taking a Querido Camilo DVD.

At the third station another sergeant, who never heard of us, took a handout andbusiness card. Unfortunately I had no more DVDs. I was asked to write my name on

the card after being thanked. I complied.

    Moral?

Not all sergeants and privates are the same.

Cpl. Daane Adam DeBoer, 24, was killed Friday by an improvised explosive device whileon foot patrol, said his father, David DeBoer of Valparaiso, Ind.

    He died a hero.

Daane DeBoer was born in Valparaiso and attended Immanuel Lutheran School throughsixth grade before moving to the Grand Rapids area. He lived in Rockford untilgraduating from high school, his father said.

Mother Remembers Eight Mile AirmanKilled In Afghanistan

June 14, 2010 Roy Hoffman, Alabama Live

When Mildred Hardee heard the news at work that four airmen in Afghanistan had beenkilled in a helicopter, she had a dark foreboding.

Her son, Staff Sgt. David Smith, was a flight engineer on an HH-60 Pave Hawkhelicopter in Afghanistan.

He had only five days of combat duty left, according to Hardee, before coming home.

  • 8/9/2019 Military Resistance 8F15 Americans Puking Up the War

    10/28

Flying in combat-rescue missions, Smith, 26, had been in danger many times, havingalso served in the war in Iraq.

But on Wednesday, Hardee had a mothers brooding intuition.

She began to make calls and soon reached a military official who told her: I regret toinform you your son, David Smith, was killed in action.

Reeling from the shock, she had another son pick her up to drive her home to Eight Mile.

Two servicemen in blue uniforms were soon walking up to the door of her house. Shetold them that she already knew why they were there.

I cant believe hes dead, said Hardee, sitting with her eldest son, Randell Dunn, in acoffee shop as she spoke with a reporter Saturday evening.

She, Randell and other family members had just arrived back from Dover Air Force base

in Dover, Del., to be present when the casket arrived from overseas.

Hardee was exhausted, breaking into tears repeatedly but wanted to share the story ofher brave, yet modest, son.

He wouldnt want all this fuss, she said. He would say, I was just doing my job.

Plans were still being made for Smiths final trip home to Eight Mile and his funeralservice. Hardee said Radney Funeral Home in Saraland will handle arrangements.

Smith had been in the 66th Rescue Squadron based at Nellis Air Force Base in LasVegas.

According to information from his base, four airmen were killed when Taliban insurgentsfired two rocket-propelled grenades at their helicopter as it flew across the Helmandprovince.

David Cazzie Smith was the baby of the family, the youngest of five. One sister is in theCoast Guard, and a brother is a Navy veteran. Smiths maternal grandfather served withthe Armys Military Police in World War II.

Hardee depicted her son as quietly intellectual, a Satsuma High graduate who took ayear off after school before making his decision to join the Air Force.

He was a computer nerd, Hardee said. Anything electronic, he could take it apart andput it back together.

He enjoyed pranks with his brothers and sisters, too. Hardee laughed between hertears, reminiscing about the time her children got into a paintball fight.

Were a close family, she said of her four surviving children and 10 grandchildren. Mostlive near one another in north Mobile County.

  • 8/9/2019 Military Resistance 8F15 Americans Puking Up the War

    11/28

Her late husband, George Melvin Hardee, was a stepfather to Smith, she said.

That her son had gone into rescue missions made sense to her.

He was a loyal friend, she said, remembering how David, in grade school, had stoodup for a buddy who was made fun of by other kids for having learning disabilities.

She recalled his dry humor and his enjoyment of funny movies and stand-up comedy.

He received five Air Medals and an Air Force Achievement Medal, according to Nellis AirForce Base, but Hardee said her son never boasted.

On his trips home to Eight Mile, he relaxed in civilian clothes, laid back, said hisbrother, Randell. He talked little about the war.

When he put on his uniform again, said his brother, he was Staff Sergeant DavidSmith.

He had plans to go to college after leaving the military in another year, his mother said, and buy a house with the money that he had saved in the Air Force.

And he had just gotten engaged.

His fiance, who lives in Nevada, is now heading to Eight Mile for sadder reasons.

He was a hero, Hardee said, a young patriot who had complex feelings aboutAfghanistan -- as does she -- but he said to her, Im needed in this war.

She does not want the public to forget the sacrifices of her son and of all the men andwomen in the armed services.

Her son, Hardee said, was concerned about her feelings and wanted to shield her frompain and worry. He urged her not even to follow accounts of the war.

He told me, Mama, dont listen to the news. Dont worry until you see blue uniformsknocking on your door.

Call me a cynic, but as soon as I hear of the latest rogue state, declared by the US andendorsed, invariably, by UK and Israel - a rogue, always far away, invariably eitherpoverty stricken, or embargoed - I reach for a 1993 Encyclopaedia of WorldGeography, turn to the page on the latest declared enemy, and look at the box whichlists: Major resources.

In October 2001, as the assault on, and invasion of, Afghanistan began, ostensibly in thesearch for one man, Osama bin Laden, I found (p. 400) : Major resources: natural gas, coal, iron ore, beryllium, gold, silver, lapis lazuli, sulfur, chrome, copper ...

Although deposits have also been seen, clearly, from satellite for years, incredibly, themight of United States experts have only made this (estimated at least a trillion$discovery) little over a year before they are pondering draw down (sort of, maybe, whatever ...)

As Peter Eyre has written: ... I was informed of this incredible wealth over 20 yearsago, whilst working in the oil, gas and mining industry. The Russians have a wealth ofinformation in their archives in Moscow and the US have been monitoring this wealth

over many years, with an in depth study taking place soon after they invadedAfghanistan. (My emphasis.) Take the area around Kabul.an extensive copper beltextends from southeast Kabul up the eastern side, reaching up and around the USBagram air base. One can normally associate the existence of copper with that of gold...

Further: (... added) to this the US proposed gas pipeline Turkmenistan Afghanistan Pakistan India (TAPI) which is worth (inestimable) dollars to the US economy thecentral aim of US, UK and NATO forces seems obvious. I would again ask: why are allthe coalition forces directing their fighting in the provinces of Herat, Helmand andKandahar? (It is) the expected transit route for the TAPI pipeline .., comments Eyre.

Coincidentally it is also the centre of the Opium trade.

Two days after the Twin Towers fell, George W. Bush stated:The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priorityand we will not rest until we find him. (Washington, D.C., Sept. 13, 2001.)

Yet, incredibly: Two dozen members of Osama bin Ladens family were urgentlyevacuated from the United States in the first days following the terrorist attacks on NewYork and Washington, CBS reported.

The Bush and bin Laden family had, of course, been partners in the giant Carlyle Group(arms, construction) for years.

Even though American airspace had been shut down ... the Bush Administrationallowed a jet to fly around the US., picking up family members from 10 cities, includingLos Angeles, Washington DC, Boston and Houston.

The skies over America in the days following 9/11 were in lock-down mode, yet theentire family of Americas number one enemy is released ... not a single Americancitizen could fly ... yet ... the family of the evil mastermind who allegedly usedcommercial jets (to destroy buildings, departs on) commercial jets! This sort of irrational

    22/28

behavior ... makes it look as if the Bush Administration knew that Osama bin Laden wasnot responsible for the attacks ... (1)

Just five months later, George W. Bush was asked:But dont you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed wont truly be eliminateduntil he is found either dead or alive?

The President: .... I Ill repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him... (transcript from Press Conference.)

The page before Afghanistan is devoted to another recurring US bogeyman, oftenaccused of harbouring terrorists, Yemen. The little over eleven million populationposing a threat to Americas three hundred and fifty million, have a life expectancy of fifty(men) and fifty two (women.) Clearly the country could make better use of the petroleumand natural gas, listed in Major resources.

Just across the Gulf of Aden, is another American nemesis: Somalia (populationapproximately ten million, life expectancy two years more than Yemen) where the mightof the US Sixth Fleet and UK Navy patrol against pirates, whose unconventional career

choice provides facilities and infrastructure the government is unwilling or unable to.

Will the occasional extra-judicial murder by US drones turn in to the full scale invasion ofanother far away place? Major resources include: uranium, iron ore, tin, gypsum, bauxite, copper and other minerals not yet exploited (my emphasis.)

Up the coast, where Israeli pirates hi-jack aid ships and murder passengers deliveringessential goods to besieged, poverty stricken Gaza, with impunity - and to deafeningsilence from Washington - the wealth of Gazas natural gas fields are denied to itspeople, by Americas ally, the only democracy in the Middle East.

Pakistan, US spokespeople claim, increasingly shrilly, is not pulling its weight in the war

on terror, with seriously bad people from Afghanistan, or their allies, operating fromwithin its borders. American troops wearing Pakistani traditional clothing, have, onseveral occasions seemingly carried out murders within the countrys sovereign territory,or been, coincidentally, very close to scenes of explosion and carnage. Majorresources include: natural gas, coal, iron ore, bauxite, wheat and tobacco.

As American and Israeli war ships are reported to be heading towards Iran (embargoedby the US since 1979) notable is that it does not alone have a vast oil potential, but:natural gas, coal, chromium, copper ...

Next door, Iraqs vast oil wealth, with its fake tenders was carved up long before theinvasion to liberate the country from a tyrant - and impose more compliant despots.

The country also has a wealth of: natural gas, phosphates, sulfur - and vast deposits ofuranium, known to Americas ally, Britain, who prospected for it there in the 1950s.

North Korea, no stranger to sabre rattling by the US, was in May, accused of torpedoingthe warship Cheonan, vessel of its southern neighbour and close American ally. NorthKorea has been under a US embargo since 1950, tightened by Americans Nobel PeaceLaureate President, at the UN in June 2009.

No doubt sixty years of deprivation of normal international trade relations havesomething to do with the countrys inability to sufficiently exploit its reserves of: iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, coal, gold, silver, uranium, manganese and petroleum.

We would never have been invaded if we exported carrots, is a wry, frequently heard,Iraqi refrain. Indeed.

Twisted Freaks Say They Did It BecauseThe Old Woman Took A More

    Aggressive Posture In Her Bed

June 24, 2010 By TIM HULL, Courthouse News Service

Police Tasered an 86-year-old disabled grandma in her bed and stepped on her oxygenhose until she couldnt breathe, after her grandson called 911 seeking medicalassistance, the woman and her grandson claim in Oklahoma City Federal Court.

Though the grandson said, Dont Taze my granny! an El Reno police officer toldanother cop to Taser her! and wrote in his police report that he did so because the oldwoman took a more aggressive posture in her bed, according to the complaint.

Lonnie Tinsley said that he called 911 after he went to check on his grandmother, whom

he found in her bed, connected to a portable oxygen concentrator with a long hose. She is in marginal health, takes several prescribed medications daily, and was unableto tell him exactly when she had taken her meds, so, Tinsley says, he called 911 to askfor an emergency medical technician to come to her apartment to evaluate her.

In response, as many as ten El Reno police officers pushed their way through thedoor, according to the complaint.

The grandma, Lona Varner, told them to get out of her apartment.

The remarkable complaint continues: Instead, the apparent leader of the police(defendant Thomas Duran) instructed another policeman to Taser her!

He stated in his report that the 86 year-old plaintiff took a more aggressiveposture in her bed, and that he was fearful for his safety and the safety of others.

Lonnie Tinsley told them, Dont taze my Granny! to which they responded that theywould Taser him; instead, they pulled him out of her apartment, took him down to thefloor, handcuffed him and placed him in the back of a police car.

The police then proceeded to approach Ms. Varner in her bed and stepped on heroxygen hose until she began to suffer oxygen deprivation.

    The police then fired a Taser at her and only one wire struck her, in the left arm;

the police then fired a second Taser, striking her to the right and left of the midlineof her upper chest and applied high voltage, causing burns to her chest, extremepain and to pass out.

The police then grabbed Ms. Varner by her forearms and jerked hands together, causing her soft flesh to tear and bleed on her bed; they then handcuffed her.

The police freed Lonnie Tinsley from his incarceration in the back of the police car andpermitted him to accompany the ambulance with his grandmother.

Tinsley says the cops capped it all off by having his grandmother placed in thepsychiatric ward at the direction of the El Reno police; she was held there for sixdays and released.

As a result of the wrongful arrest and detention, the plaintiff Lona M. Varner suffered the

unlawful restraint of her freedom, bodily injury, assault, battery, the trashing of herapartment, humiliation, loss of personal dignity, infliction of emotional distress andmedical bills.

The father of a 6-year-old Ohio girl who turned up on the U.S. governments terror watchlist says the worst thing his daughter has ever done is probably been mean to her sister.

But Santhosh Thomas, a doctor from Westlake, Ohio, says hes sure thats not enoughto land his 6-year-old Alyssa on the no-fly list of suspected terrorists. She may havethreatened her sister, but I dont think that constitutes Homeland Security triggers, hetold CNN.

An airline ticket agent informed the family of their predicament when they embarked on

recent trip from Cleveland to Minneapolis.

They said, Well, shes on the list. Were like, okay, whats the story? What do we haveto do to get off the list? This isnt exactly the list we want to be on, Thomas said.

The Thomases were allowed to fly that day, but authorities told them to contact the U.S.Department of Homeland Security to clear up the matter.

Now theyve received a letter from the government addressed to 6-year-old Alyssa, telling her that nothing in her file will be changed.

Federal authorities have acknowledged that such a no-fly list exists, but as a matter of

national security, they wont comment on whose names are on it nor why.

The watch lists are an important layer of security to prevent individuals with known orsuspected ties to terrorism from flying, an unnamed spokesman for the TransportationSecurity Administration told Fox News.

Shes been flying since she was two-months old, so that has not been an issue,Alyssas dad said. In fact, we had traveled to Mexico in February and there were noissues at that time.

Thats likely because of a recent change by the Transportation Security Administration, which used to check only international passengers names against the no-fly list, but

since earlier this month has been checking domestic passengers as well.

The Thomases told CNN they plan on appealing Alyssas status to the U.S. Departmentof Homeland Security again, and will be sure to leave plenty of extra time for check-inthe next time they fly.
