Next week we begin with what is in many ways the most meaningful, and certainly the most powerful, season of the Christian year. The church gives this season the name “LENT”. Lent translated could mean “spring” or “lengthening of days”; and so for the Christian church it has become a season (40 days excluding Sundays prior to Easter) for followers of Christ to focus on new growth. The Bible tells us that can only come when we focus our lives on repenting of our sins and consecrating oneself to God. Therefore, the call of the church to the people during this time is to set aside a special time for prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works in preparation of the celebration of Easter. Why “40” days? It recalls the forty days Jesus spent in the desert being tested before he began his public ministry. Forty has long been an important number in the Bible. Forty was the number of years the people of Israel wandered in the wilderness, and the number of days Elijah spent listening for a word from God. It also reminds us of the flood in Genesis, and denotes the number of hours Jesus spent in the tomb. The liturgical symbol of Lent is purple acknowledging the royalty of Jesus. Since its first observance, dating as far back as the year 180 AD, Lent more than any other season of the Christian year is a time of intention and resolution. On the first day of Lent next week, (A sh Wednesday – Feb. 10 th @ 6:20 pm), the ashes that are imposed on our foreheads are a symbol of penance, reminding us to turn to God. Historically, the season of Lent has been marked by fasting or “giving-up” something we enjoy. The purpose of such a ritual is to help us reprioritize our lives and draw closer to God. Here at Milledgeville First UMC, we will be marking these weeks leading up to Easter in a number of ways. My sermon theme will be “Opening up to God”… so that God can do what God does best in us”. Besides the Ash Wednesday observance, we will offer our traditional Holy Week worship services including the communion Last Supper on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday day of prayer, and four (4) Easter Morning services beginning at sunrise on our front lawn. I want to encourage you during this time of high resolution to make regular worship a priority in your life. The best way to appreciate the “Glory of Easter” is to experience the power of Jesus’ life during Lent. I look forward to the journey before us, and worshiping with you. Sunday’s Scripture Lesson:

“The Celebratory Life”

Psalm 34:1-7

‘Tis the Season—Holy, Holy, Holy….

Next week we begin with what is in many ways the most meaningful, and certainly the most

powerful, season of the Christian year. The church gives this season the name “LENT”. Lent

translated could mean “spring” or “lengthening of days”; and so for the Christian church it has

become a season (40 days excluding Sundays prior to Easter) for followers of Christ to focus on

new growth. The Bible tells us that can only come when we focus our lives on repenting of our

sins and consecrating oneself to God. Therefore, the call of the church to the people during this

time is to set aside a special time for prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works in preparation of

the celebration of Easter.

Why “40” days? It recalls the forty days Jesus spent in the desert being tested before he began

his public ministry. Forty has long been an important number in the Bible. Forty was the

number of years the people of Israel wandered in the wilderness, and the number of days Elijah

spent listening for a word from God. It also reminds us of the flood in Genesis, and denotes the

number of hours Jesus spent in the tomb.

The liturgical symbol of Lent is purple acknowledging the royalty of Jesus. Since its first

observance, dating as far back as the year 180 AD, Lent more than any other season of the

Christian year is a time of intention and resolution. On the first day of Lent next week, (Ash

Wednesday – Feb. 10th @ 6:20 pm), the ashes that are imposed on our foreheads are a symbol of

penance, reminding us to turn to God.

Historically, the season of Lent has been marked by fasting or “giving-up” something we

enjoy. The purpose of such a ritual is to help us reprioritize our lives and draw closer to God.

Here at Milledgeville First UMC, we will be marking these weeks leading up to Easter in a

number of ways. My sermon theme will be “Opening up to God”… so that God can do what

God does best in us”. Besides the Ash Wednesday observance, we will offer our traditional

Holy Week worship services including the communion Last Supper on Maundy Thursday, Good

Friday day of prayer, and four (4) Easter Morning services beginning at sunrise on our front

lawn.

I want to encourage you during this time of high resolution to make regular worship a priority in

your life. The best way to appreciate the “Glory of Easter” is to experience the power of Jesus’

life during Lent. I look forward to the journey before us, and worshiping with you.
