There are thousands of them in the Association, trees of all ages, sizes, varieties, and condition. Many of us who have lived here since the 1980’s cannot help but notice how dense and how much larger the trees are in our common areas and on our residential properties. This makes our job more complex and expensive, but we have a plan in place thats working. Our Maintenance Crew is on the lookoutAs beautiful as healthy trees are, the MCCA has to remove trees that are dead, dying, diseased, damaged, and/or dangerous to residents, their property, or the Associations infrastructure. We look for trees that stand out for their lack of color, fullness, excessive sap and cones, among other signs of decline. When we notice trees that are in trouble, we get an experienced arborists opinion. If they have to be removed we have it done by professionals with an eye toward limiting the impact on the eco-system. Trees removed in areas where we mow are removed entirely. Trees in wooded common areas are sometimes left where they fall. We replant whenever possibleThe MCCA plants trees and shrubs after removal every chance we get. As examples, we planted Western Red Cedars on the Huckleberry hillside, along Village Green Drive, along the path between Douglas Fir and Holly, in Holly Park, and in the Nature Preserve. We planted Burgundy Leaf cherry trees in Cherry Park, and weve planted Rhododendrons and Vine Maples in various places. We are constantly purchasing native plants and trees to replace those lost as we enhance our Mill Creek Community Association environment. We want to keep Mill Creek Community Association green for many years to come. December 2019

MillStream President’s Message by terry gemmill Trees are a big issue at the MCCA… We love our trees. Trees are one of the most appealing features of living in a NW community. There are thousands of them in the Association, trees of all ages, sizes, varieties, and condition. Many of us who have lived here since the 1980’s cannot help but notice how dense and how much larger the trees are in our common areas and on our residential properties. This makes our job more complex and expensive, but we have a plan in place that’s working.

Our Maintenance Crew is on the lookout… As beautiful as healthy trees are, the MCCA has to remove trees that are dead, dying, diseased, damaged, and/or dangerous to residents, their property, or the Association’s infrastructure. We look for trees that stand out for their lack of color, fullness, excessive sap and cones, among other signs of decline. When we notice trees that are in trouble, we get an experienced arborist’s opinion. If they have to be removed we have it done by professionals with an eye toward limiting the impact on the eco-system. Trees removed in areas where we mow are removed entirely. Trees in wooded common areas are sometimes left where they fall.

We replant whenever possible… The MCCA plants trees and shrubs after removal every chance we get. As examples, we planted Western Red Cedars on the Huckleberry hillside, along Village Green Drive, along the path between Douglas Fir and Holly, in Holly Park, and in the Nature Preserve. We planted Burgundy Leaf cherry trees in Cherry Park, and we’ve planted Rhododendrons and Vine Maples in various places. We are constantly purchasing native plants and trees to replace those lost as we enhance our Mill Creek Community Association environment. We want to keep Mill Creek Community Association green for many years to come.

Stay in touch with your Association by way of this MillStream Newsletter, Constant Contact, our Facebook page, and our 3 major mailings each year (budget, assessments, and the annual meeting). Thinking of becoming a committee volunteer? Call us at 425-316-3344.

MCCA Administration

Learn more about MCCA on our website and see our fresh, new look. You can keep up to date with everything that is going on in MCCA via our website calendar. The website also has all the forms you will need to apply for roofing, painting, landscaping, and more. Please take some time to look around!

Our PayHOA system is up and running. Please make sure your current email address and phone number are in the system. If you have a question about logging into PayHOA, please email the office ([email protected]), we are happy to help. Updated contact information allows us to contact you regarding projects going on in your neighborhood, mail hutch replacements, our annual survey, the bi-monthly MillStream, and so much more.

MCCA Maintenance

Our maintenance staff has been working hard to keep our trails and sidewalks clear of leaves and moss. Although the City of Mill Creek owns the sidewalks along our main roads, MCCA crews work hard to keep the sidewalks adjacent to our common areas clear of leaves and debris. This a large job in the fall months. We also work to remove moss from the city sidewalks adjacent to our common areas as well as our trail system.

The hutch replacement program continues. The project started in Spring Tree (our oldest division), and is moving up and around our Association. Our team is currently replacing hutches in the Red Cedar subdivision. Hutch repairs including painting and reroofing will be done in the Spring and Summer when weather conditions allow.

MCCA Security

If you are heading out of town, remember to turn in a Security Check Request Form. Security will either drive by your home, or stop and walk around your home once a day to keep an eye on things while you are away. You can find the Security Check Request and other forms on the Forms page of our website.

We have noticed an increase in car prowlers in the area. The safest place to store your vehicle is in your locked garage. If you park your vehicle on your driveway or in the street, please remove all valuables and keep your car locked. Car prowlers are looking for easy targets, don’t make your car their first choice. Please call the Mill Creek Police Department to report all car prowlers. If you see a theft in progress, call 911. To report an issue after the fact, please use the non-emergency number 425-407-3999.

Covenant Committee

Your Covenant Committee sends wishes for a joyful holiday season to all residents. It is a busy time

of year, so hopefully you have completed your autumn home maintenance list. Please remember

when trimming or cleaning up from wind storms, you are responsible to dispose of all your yard

waste. Extra containers can be delivered to you by Waste Management if you request them. Do not

dump yard waste in common areas. Dumping in the common areas is against MCCA covenants.

As you plan and implement your holiday decorating, please be aware of the covenants governing

these displays. Lighting is not to be turned on until the day after Thanksgiving. Also, all displays

must be dismantled and stored away by Super Bowl Sunday.

Another item of note. Members of the committee have noticed an increase in trash and recycle

containers stored improperly. These must be stored out of view of the street and your neighbors.

Also covenants require that containers not be put on the street until no more than 24 hours before

pick up, and must be stored out of view within 24 hours after pick up.

Your Covenant Committee thanks you for being such responsible homeowners. We have a beautiful

community that reflects your hard work in this area. Again a very happy holiday season to everyone.

Noxious Weed Committee

The Noxious Weed Committee (NWC) is entering its favorite time of the year, and it should be yours too! The insects have gone dormant, and the ground is wet! It is so much easier to remove those pesky invasives root and all! Now that the mowing is done, there is more room in your yard waste container! (But remember herb Robert and yellow archangel must be bagged and put in the garbage!)

The committee continued their work in September at the Spring Tree playground area, in October at Cherry Park, and in November at Huckleberry. This being the committee’s second year, it was rewarding to be able to see previously cleared areas did not require near the time and effort of last year, so new work was begun in each park!

In September our two youngest committee members George (on the left) and Kent (on the right) of Douglas Fir received Excellence Awards and gift cards to Skinny D’s Yogurt for volunteering at our Saturday events throughout the past year! Dad Robert and Mom Miki also volunteer, and Miki is a regular at the Monday morning work events! We say thank you to the Morrison family for helping make our parks more enjoyable for all MCCA residents!

At the Volunteer Appreciation dinner, Walt Lenox received the 2019 MCCA Beautification Award! Walt is a regular at all the NWC work events, which is only one of his volunteer activities with MCCA. But with the NWC Walt takes in stride the sometimes difficult conditions with a smile and sense of humor! Very much appreciated!

The NWC wants you to know in all of our efforts there is a great amount of support received from the MCCA Maintenance Team! They survey sites with us, pick up our debris piles and deliver wood chips willingly in spite of their busy schedule. We can’t thank them enough, and we hope you do too when you see them out working! Here are some before and after pictures that they helped make possible!

The NWC will be hosting events at Douglas Fir on Saturday, January 25, and at Red Cedar on Saturday, February 22! Both parks have playgrounds for the kiddos when they tire of helping out, so put the dates on your calendar!

To follow the NWC , email [email protected] and ask to be put on our contact list. You are always welcome to volunteer when you can on Monday mornings from 9 to 12 or at a Saturday event from 9 to 12! It truly is a committee where the more the merrier! Happy Holidays!

Mill Creek Garden Club

Gardeners, Grub and Gabbing

Although now at capacity, new joins were warmly welcomed at a recent

Newcomers’ Social. Club President Lyndal Kennedy along with officers

Kathy Thomas, Connie Hannam, Nancy Hedges and Stephanie Morse

were there to greet everyone, as were several committee chairs.

Introductions were made and the chairs spoke briefly, encouraging the

new members to embrace the Club’s projects and activities. The

gathering, planned by Gail Fraioli, featured apple cider, tea and coffee

along with seasonal baked treats; the perfect combination for a

delightful afternoon.

Harmony and Giving

The November meeting featured guest speaker Ladd Smith of In

Harmony Sustainable Landscapes, who spoke about preparing our

gardens now for an easier spring. In Harmony has been a generous

supporter of the Mill Creek Garden Tour. In the spirit of Thanksgiving,

members dropped off non-perishable food items in the waiting truck and then some of our wonderful

husbands delivered the goods to the Mill Creek Community Food Bank.

Shh, Garden Elves at Work

It’s the best kept secret—the decorations, menu and entertainment for the annual MCGC Christmas Party.

How this most-popular committee keeps all that secret is anyone’s guess! The one known is the Club’s annual

contribution of “toys, mittens, & hats” to Christmas House. The

unwrapped, new items are displayed in the entry way of Shawn

O’Donnell’s where it looks like a visit from Santa! Pictures are

taken before the gifts are loaded into a waiting truck. Our

special elves deliver the donations to the Christmas House

“store” in Everett.

Mill Creek Garden Tour & Artisan Market 2020 Scheduled Saturday, June 27, 11 AM-4 PM

We need your garden on the tour! Apply to schedule a garden walk through at millcreekgardenclub.com. We

can look past the frozen leaves to see the love you put into your yard!

‘Tis the Season! Garden Club wishes you balmy times ahead!

Mill Creek Women’s Club

Holiday Program and Author Event

The Mill Creek Women’s Club’s Governing Board is pleased to

announce a successful fund-raising event on November 20 at its

annual auction. Many thanks go out to its members and guests who,

by their generosity, allow the Club to continue its philanthropic mission,

helping to fund the needs of the YWCA Homeward House, Woodside

School, Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County and Dawson

Place Child Advocacy Center.

On December 18, 2019, members and guests will be entertained by the

Mill Creek Chorale, founded in 2014. Its Artistic Director is Sean Berg.

The Chorale is an “adult auditioned community choir” with

approximately 85 members that serves Mill Creek and surrounding

areas in Snohomish County. The Chorale currently rehearses Tuesday

nights from 7-9 pm at the Advent Lutheran Church in Mill Creek and

welcomes individuals who enjoy singing and would like to try out.

Contact [email protected] for further info. Members will

also enjoy a Christmas party, a singalong, and a book exchange.

On January 15, 2020, The Club is very fortunate to present author, Kelli

Estes, who will discuss her latest novel, Today We Go Home, which was

released in September 2019. We remember her as the author of The

Girl Who Wrote in Silk. Members will be able to purchase an

autographed copy of her books after her presentation.

Ms. Estes earned a degree in business before deciding to try her hand

at writing. Six manuscripts, two kids, and fifteen years later, her dream

of being an author came true in 2015 with the publication of The Girl

Who Wrote in Silk which is a USA Today Bestseller and winner of the

PNWA Nancy Pearl Award and WFWA Star Award (debut). Her second

novel, Today We Go Home (Sourcebooks Landmark) was released in

September 2019. She’s passionate about stories that help us see how

the past shapes who we are today, and how we all have more in

common than not.

The General Membership Meetings of the Mill Creek Women’s Club are

now held at the Hilton Garden Inn at Canyon Park. Registration begins

at 10:30 a.m. For information about these meetings or membership in

the Mill Creek Women’s Club, email [email protected].
