MAC Members—What a way to end 2018 – with a monumental party with over 450 members in attendance! I was really overwhelmed to see so many people enjoying our Clubhouse and each other’s company. The food, beverage and entertainment were incredible, and the event was a highlight for the year.

After the party roared to an end and the year flipped to 2019, your Board and its committees immediately resumed work on the building project. The 758 Broadway building officially shut down on January 2nd and Clubhouse services began that very day at our temporary home at 735 N. Water St. As expected, there are growing pains. I’ve been privy to the vast majority of the hiccups experienced by members at our new club space. I’ve noticed the issues to be well received by our management and staff. The majority of the ‘irks’ have already been addressed and continuous improvement occurs daily. Almost one full month in at our new space and we have progressed remarkably – our home away from home is serving us well.

If you are still not aware, please know that we have an interim clubhouse to serve all MAC members while our Home Club undergoes renovation. It is located at 735 N. Water St. You can enter curbside at the 735 entrance. Upon entering, walk down the hall and turn left at the Starbucks stand. You will see the MAC on Water Clubhouse double doors with our logo on them. Here you can check in to athletics and/or have a drink and a great meal with others.

The athletic amenities include: executive locker rooms, basketball court, cardio, weights, machines, group fitness studio, mind & body studio, a women’s only (Lady Gold’s) area, pool, group cycling, cardio theater room and even a smoothie bar.

I have worked out, swam, played basketball, eaten lunch, eaten breakfast and even enjoyed an after-work beverage in our interim clubhouse already. Each and every experience has been really great. So, please use your Club and don’t forget your Food & Beverage credits being sponsored by the Club until we move back to our renovated home.

Speaking of our renovated home…there continues to be a lot of ‘noise’ about our building project. As anyone in the commercial real estate and development industry can tell you (especially with a project of this size) there are a lot of variables.

Some of our variables include taxes, permits, insurance, financing, property management, service agreements… if I haven’t touched on all of the aspects of the project, then I missed something! There are some really delicate steps that need to fall into place, which takes a lot of different business entities communicating constantly. We are well on our way to achieve planned milestones on-time despite some timing setbacks.

Here is the good news: We are still on pace with our original building plan. Our developers are finalizing their tax credit partnership along with selecting a construction lender. Offers have been received, albeit behind schedule,

but are now in hand with an intent to finalize in the next few weeks. The MAC building is finalizing its auction to clear the house of all its ‘stuff’, and upon conclusion of that process the team can begin abatement, demo and general construction.

I have met weekly, if not daily, with our Club partners and developers to ensure the project schedule remains intact despite some timing frustrations during the holiday season. Our finance committee, led by Dave Mesick, meets weekly, if not daily via e-mail, to schedule, forecast and plan our next steps as a Club.

The complexity of this deal was not unexpected, but the variety and volume of critical elements necessary to successfully commence construction has taken more time than originally planned. We remain completely invested in our membership stakeholders and entirely optimistic that the project will continue as scheduled, on time, and conclude with a Q1 2020 relaunch in our fully updated and renovated Club home at 758 N Broadway.

Milestones the Club, our developers and future partners have in store for the next 30-60 days:-Building acquisition-Environmental-Construction Loan closing-GMP contract signing-Historic tax credit partnership selection-PE partnership selection

In closing, we have a tremendous amount of momentum building at the Milwaukee Athletic Club. Our developers are heavily invested personally and professionally in our building project. Despite some delays, all parties remain committed and highly confident in completing the steps outlined above and commencing construction as soon as possible to ensure our relaunch timetable is still accurate.

As always, please direct any questions or inquiries to myself or your Board. Until relaunch, please continue to enjoy all of the services and amenities our interim club offers.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

God bless,

A. David KrieteMAC Board President

MAC MeMbeR sPotLIGHtAlexandra Don

Why did you become a member of the MAC?As I was moving into my apartment, my mom noticed the rooftop twinkle lights from my living room window and asked me what the building was. After some research and Google mapping, I was able to figure out that it was the rooftop of the MAC. We proceeded to browse the MAC website, and I decided to set up a tour with Tori in the week to follow. After being presented with what the various opportunities the MAC has to offer professionally, personally and athletically, I decided that I wanted to join and became a member in July of 2018. Joining the MAC has been the best decision I made since taking the leap to move to Milwaukee for law school.

Favorite MAC memory so far?Other than the welcoming and creative monthly MAC Women’s events that I attend regularly, my favorite memory at the MAC thus far has been attending the Best Is Yet To Come Gala. The atmosphere was terrific, the music was engaging, and the camaraderie amongst the members and other attendees was invigorating. I hope that the Gala is an accurate representation of the future events that will be held at the MAC once we get back into our redeveloped and reimagined home.

Other than the MAC, what other local organizations are you apart of?As far as personal organizations are concerned, I am a member of the Junior League of Milwaukee and the Kappa Alpha Theta Milwaukee Alumni Chapter. As far as professional organizations are concerned, I am a member of Wisconsin Commercial Real Estate Women (WCREW), part of the NextGen Class of Commercial Association of Realtors of Wisconsin (CARW), and member of the State Bar of Wisconsin.

Where did you grow up, attend school, degree?I was born and raised in Pasadena, California. After graduating from high school, I moved to northern California where I attended Santa Clara University and received a dual degree in Economics and Political Science. Then after graduating from college, I moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to attend Marquette University Law School where I received my J.D. and earned a Certificate in Global Arbitration as well as Alternative Dispute Resolution. Upon graduating from Law School in the Spring of 2016, I was fortunate to land my dream job, and I have stayed in the Milwaukee area ever since.

What do you do for work?I am a Transactional Attorney that focuses mainly on Commercial Real Estate at a boutique law firm in the Third Ward named AVK Law, LLC. We represent clients in all aspects of Commercial Real Estate transactions from buying and selling properties to leasing properties, be it on the Landlord or Tenant side.

What is something someone would be surprised to know about you? Most people are surprised to find out that I am a first generation American that is 100% Cuban. Both of my parents were born in Cuba and migrated to the States when they were young children. I am very fortunate in that during the majority of my childhood my grandparents, and my parents focused on speaking to my brother and me in both Spanish and English, which has afforded me the opportunity to become fluent in both languages. Additionally, most people are also surprised to hear that I played water polo since it is not a common sport here in the Midwest.

What is your superpower?I’m an excellent multi-tasker. I find that the more items that are on my plate, the more I excel, which is why multi-tasking is a useful superpower for me since I believe that the more you put into an activity or a group, the more you get out of it. That is one of the reasons that I make it a point to attend as many events as I can in the various organizations I am involved in. I find that showing up is the best way to get to know people.

What are your other outside interests?I love attending sporting events and events with live music. Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed seeing people live out their passions be it on a field or on a stage. I find it inspiring, and it makes me want to strive to be the best I can be in my profession. I also have a strong passion for community service. I am often thinking of ways to incorporate an aspect of community service in all areas of my life, which was one of the reasons that lead me to host blood drives in partnership with the Blood Center of Wisconsin at the MAC.

What would your perfect day look like?My perfect day would be sleeping in, hanging out with my friends, attending a sporting event or concert, and trying a new local restaurant.

Favorite music or sports team?I love anything country music! It is the genre that takes over almost all of my radio presets. When it comes to sports teams, I tend to follow more college teams than professional, however, as a proud adopted Wisconsinite, I have become an avid fan of the love the Packers, Bucks, and Brewers.

Recently, some of the MAC Women took a trip to Nashville, Tennessee. It will hopefully be the first of

many trips we take as a group. (Above photo)

Where did you grow up and attend school? college? degree?I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin (Go Pack Go!) and attended college at UW Oshkosh. My major was Kinesiology with a Minor in Business Administration.

How long have you worked for the MAC?I have worked for the MAC just shy of 3 years. I started with the MAC in the athletic department, moved into marketing, and now into my current role of membership sales. It’s been great working for all the departments as I have learned quite a bit along the way, while also meeting Members in all different areas of the Club.

What did you do before your role as membership director?I worked in Appleton before I moved to Milwaukee to pursue a career in corporate wellness. I worked for a few major corporations including Johnson Controls, Kohl’s Corporate and Northwestern Mutual before starting a full time career with the MAC.

What is your favorite part of the position?Meeting and getting to know both current and new Members!

What do you like about running Book Club? The Members who are a part of it. Everyone is so great, and the books we read are very interesting and engaging. Never saw myself running a Book Club, but I’m sure glad I was asked to do it. Do you have a favorite MAC event you attend/facilitate/hope members go to?I really enjoy the Member mixers we offer. It’s a great way to meet more Members and have

any questions answered while mixing and mingling with both prospects and the current membership.

What are your hobbies?Racing sailboats, working out, trying new restaurants, being outdoors, spending time with family and friends.

What sailing regatta is the most memorable and why? That’s a tough question. Being a third generation sailor and growing up on a boat, I would say there were a quite a few. Last year, I competed in the Hook race which is a race from Racine to Menominee, MI. We ended up sailing in crazy storm conditions that included gale winds (34 + knots) and 8-10 foot waves. The fleet started with 50 boats and only 11 finished. The best and most rewarding part was winning the entire race.

What is your exercise routine?I typically work out every morning before work. I mix it up between cardio, strength, flexibility and balance. In the Summer I enjoy biking and hiking outdoors.

Favorite treat: cocktail, food, candy, snack?I love food in general and will eat almost anything. But my favorite guilty treats are

dark chocolate, kettle corn and ice cream. I’m definitely a sucker for sushi as well… became my favorite food after moving to Milwaukee.

How much do you like Lifesavers mints on scale of 1-10?10/10 for sure! Pretty sure I eat half of the bowl I have at my desk when I put it out for Members and guests. Definitely love my wintergreen mints.

What do you think about the “new MAC” and the experience it will bring to members?I think the new MAC will be outstanding. The location, amenities, service and experience will be the best in the area, and I think those that stick through this transition will be pleasantly surprised at how great the MAC will be (once again). To be a part of the renovation process and to say you made it through the transition is something not everyone can say they’ve done. Definitely looking forward to the bright future ahead.

Any thoughts on the MAC on Water being on the river?I look forward to the Summer weather and being able to open the doors of MAC on Water. The views downtown and being along the river are great. Looking forward to the MAC possibly offering some boat/pontoon rides for our Members!

Tori with Pro Football Hall of Famer, Jerry Kramer when he spoke in July at the MAC.

"Right before we took the photo, he said 'the short ladies are the ones who know how to demand

attention' - hence the big smiles/laugh."

Four reasons Pilates is good for injury rehabilitation

Pilates is much more than an exercise for physical appearances. There are so many benefits for those who have suffered an injury. Not only does Pilates help you come back from injuries stronger and faster, but it’s proven time and time again to be a key to prevent future injuries as well.

Pilates combines the principles of breathing, core strengthening, align-ment, integration, and spine articu-lation, which offer an opportunity to re-align and transform the body and mind.

Many would suggest that providing a positive movement experience with-out pain might be the single greatest contributing factor to successful outcome in anyone who has or is suffering an injury. A positive outcome signifies a return to activities that were limited prior, which leaves one with a sense of happiness, hope, empower-ment and optimism.

1. Control: Pilates is such a safe and effective training program for rehabilitation because all the movements are done with control. The movements work in cohesion and require you to maintain a neu-tral spine. Plus, there is primary focus on continual-ly keeping a strong core.

2. Positive movements: Pilates teaches clients where their body is in space and helps them to find the best sequence to complete movements. Pos-itive reaffirmation of movements allows one to re-learn appropriate ways to complete movements that decrease stress on injured areas. This is ex-tremely empowering to have the ability to move in confidence after being injured and decreases the chance of future injuries.

3. ConsCious breathing: Pilates has you con-tinuously aware of your breathing. Correct breath-ing helps the diaphragm stabilize the trunk. Also, correct and conscious breathing will help you to breathe into your injured areas, helping to slowly re-lieve pressure points and provide better circulation to the injured areas.

4. restores musCular balanCe: Muscle im-balances are a huge component to injuries. There are many things that cause these imbalances- our posture, the way we walk, bend over, sit, lie down, or work out. Most of us move incorrectly in some way or another, which puts too much pressure on some muscles and weakens others, causing an imbalance. The great part about Pilates is that it addresses incorrect movement patterns, promotes even musculature throughout the body, and helps you move in correct and aligned movements that will not only help to heal your injuries, but will pre-vent future ones from occurring.
