INTRODUCTION AND METHODOLOGY

At the request o f the Mining Forum, the mineral resource p o t e n t i a l o f the Vale of Belvoir-Reynolds F a l l s - G r a n i t e Tor area o f western Tasmania has been assessed ( F i g . 1 ) .

Consistent w i t h the d e f i n i t i o n s and philosophy advanced i n a previous document 'Contrasting Approaches t o Mineral Resource P o t e n t i a l ' the e v a l u a t i o n has in v o l v e d a p p r a i s a l o f the adequacy o f the e x i s t i n g g e o s c i e n t i f i c data base as w e l l as i t s content.

The r e s u l t s of past e x p l o r a t i o n i n the area are summarised from OPEN FILE r e p o r t s h e l d by the D i v i s i o n of Mines. Some comments are made about t h i s work, but there has been l i t t l e attempt t o synthesise or r e i n t e r p r e t the data. E x p l o r a t i o n of c u r r e n t l y h e l d licences over the l a s t f i v e years i s h e l d by the D i v i s i o n on CLOSED FILE and remains c o n f i d e n t i a l t o the companies concerned.

The r e p o r t separates the i n f o r m a t i o n i n t o sections on 'DATA' and 'ASSESSMENT'. The l a t t e r s e c t i o n applies known mineral deposit models t o the geologic i n f o r m a t i o n t o a d e f i n i t i o n o f zones of mineral deposit p o t e n t i a l ( F i g . 2 ) .

DEFINITIONS

A previous r e p o r t by the D i v i s i o n e n t i t l e d "Contrasting Approaches t o the Assessment o f Mineral Resource P o t e n t i a l " adopted p r e f e r r e d d e f i n i t i o n s o f the vari o u s classes - high, moderate, low and unknown. These d e f i n i t i o n s are r e s t a t e d below. I t i s necessary t o r e s t a t e t h a t these categories are a product of b o t h the c u r r e n t knowledge o f the geology o f the area and ore genetic models. As such they are l i k e l y t o change d r a m a t i c a l l y w i t h f u t u r e work and w i t h d i f f e r e n t commodities r e q u i r e d t o meet the f u t u r e needs o f humanity.

A HIGH MINERAL RESOURCE POTENTIAL e x i s t s where the g e o l o g i c a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s favourable f o r resource accumulation are known to be present, or where enough of these features are present to support the r e l e v a n t genetic model and where there i s evidence t h a t m i n e r a l i s a t i o n , not n e c e s s a r i l y o f economic s i z e or grade, has taken place.

A MODERATE MINERAL RESOURCE POTENTIAL e x i s t s where the g e o l o g i c a l data suggest t h a t the f a c t o r s favourable f o r f o r m a t i o n of a class of deposit are present or can be reasonably i n f e r r e d , or where the g e o l o g i c a l features o f the area show a reasonable degree of f i t w i t h those o f the deposit class considered. There need not be evidence of m i n e r a l i s a t i o n i n the area.

A LOW MINERAL RESOURCE POTENTIAL e x i s t s where the g e o l o g i c a l c o n d i t i o n s suggest t h a t mineral concentrations are u n l i k e l y and t h a t the r e l e v a n t genetic model cannot be supported. As noted by Taylor and Steven (1983), t h i s r e q u i r e s an element o f p o s i t i v e knowledge.

A category o f UNKNOWN MINERAL RESOURCE POTENTIAL i s used i n s i t u a t i o n s where e i t h e r the g e o s c i e n t i f i c data base i s inadequate t o assess the l i k e l i h o o d o f the resource accumulation, or the r e l e v a n t deposit models are so p o o r l y understood t h a t a reasonable assessment cannot be made. This d e f i n i t i o n i s not to be equated w i t h low mineral resource p o t e n t i a l , but takes i n t o account a hig h degree o f u n c e r t a i n t y or incompleteness i n the a v a i l a b l e i n f o r m a t i o n .

1. SUMMARY

A review o f the mineral resource p o t e n t i a l o f the Vale o f Belvoir-Reynolds F a l l s - G r a n i t e Tor area of western Tasmania i n d i c a t e s t h a t there i s considerable scope f o r the f u t u r e discovery o f economically v i a b l e m e t a l l i c m ineral deposits of a wide range of commodities i n c l u d i n g t i n , tungsten, copper, lead, z i n c , s i l v e r and gold t r a d i t i o n a l l y produced i n Tasmania as w e l l as others such as bismuth, arsenic, c o b a l t and vanadium which have not achieved prominence i n the past.

The p o t e n t i a l f o r non-metallic commodities i s v i r t u a l l y untested.

There i s an i n s u f f i c i e n t g e o s c i e n t i f i c database on which t o make an informed estimate o f resource p o t e n t i a l oVer much of the area. Suggestions f o r f u r t h e r work are appended. This work should be c a r r i e d out and adequate p r o v i s i o n be allowed f o r follow-up e x p l o r a t i o n before any f i n a l d e c i s i o n on land use o f the area i s made.

S t r a t i g r a p h i c and s t r u c t u r a l d r i l l holes i n the area would considerably enhance the confidence l e v e l o f f u t u r e assessments.

The n o r t h e r n p a r t o f the area has been covered by recent 1:25 000 published Mount Read Volcanic P r o j e c t mapping. The c e n t r a l p o r t i o n has been covered by 1:63 600 scale mapping published i n 1966, but the southern p o r t i o n has only been compiled on 1:250 000 scale, published i n 1975, and i s based on i n t e r p r e t a t i o n of a e r i a l photographs by Corbett and Brown (1975). Some u s e f u l observations have been made by e x p l o r a t i o n g e o l o g i s t s , b ut no systematic mapping, apart from f u r t h e r a i r photo i n t e r p r e t a t i o n , has been done (see Fig. 5 ) .

(b) Geological Summary

The o l d e s t rocks i n the area are Precambrian q u a r t z i t e and p h y l l i t e o f the Tyennan re g i o n which crop out i n the eastern p a r t o f the area. These are fl a n k e d t o the west and are o v e r l a i n unconformably by Cambrian sedimentary rocks i n the Back Peak area which are derived from a mixed source comprising

the Precambrian basement and Cambrian v o l c a n i c rocks. These rocks are c o r r e l a t e s of the S t i c h t Range Beds of the T y n d a l l Range. These rocks are o v e r l a i n by a mixed volcanic-sedimentary succession o f the Back Peak Beds. A major q u a r t z - f e l d s p a r - b i o t i t e - h o r n b l e n d e porphyry, the Bond Range Porphyry i n t r u d e s the Cambrian sequence and i s p a r t o f a discontinuous b e l t of s i m i l a r porphyries which occupies the eastern f l a n k o f the Mount Read Volcanics from E l l i o t t Bay t o Lorinna. Windows of quartz-bearing v o l c a n i c s and v o l c a n i c l a s t i c sandstone occur d i s c o n t i n u o u s l y i n the Black B l u f f Range-Mt Beecroft area. These rocks are probably c o r r e l a t e s of the T y n d a l l Group as are s i m i l a r rocks f u r t h e r south which occur on the shores of Lake Mackintosh.

The Mount Read Volcanics are succeeded by quartzose, and minor v o l c a n i c l a s t i c , sandstone and conglomerate of the Denison Group. These rocks are r e l a t i v e l y t h i n i n the Black B l u f f Range-Mt Beecroft area as evidenced by the windows o f Cambrian v o l c a n i c s mentioned p r e v i o u s l y but the area south of Mt Beecroft encompassing Reynolds F a l l s and Ten Mile Creek has not been remapped i n d e t a i l . The Denison Group rocks on the western shore o f Lake Mackintosh have been r e c e n t l y mapped a t a s a t i s f a c t o r y scale. Ordovician Gordon Limestone occurs i n the Vale of B e l v o i r , and the limestone and succeeding rocks, c o r r e l a t e s of the Eldon Group, occur i n the White Hawk Creek-south Mt Cripps area.

A small area o f Parmeener Group sedimentary rocks i s mapped W of Mt I n g l i s . T e r t i a r y b a s a l t crops out i n the Vale of B e l v o i r and the headwaters o f White Hawk Creek. Quaternary g l a c i a l , f l u v i o g l a c i a l , f l u v i a l and scree deposits are widespread.

The g r a v i t y and aeromagnetic coverage i s shown i n F i g . 6. Aeromagnetic data from the Tasmanian Department of Mines western Tasmanian and Devonport surveys i s a t a l i n e spacing o f 500 m w i t h a nominal t e r r a i n clearance o f 150 m. Local areas have been covered i n more d e t a i l i n company surveys.

Vale of B e l v o i r

The area has been h e l d under E x p l o r a t i o n Licences 12/65 by Pickands Mather I n t e r n a t i o n a l , 7/68 by Tasminex NL, 10/74 by Union O i l , w i t h subsequent e x p l o r a t i o n under a farm out agreement by Geopeko, 41/83 by RGC and 47/87 by B i l l i t o n .

Most a t t e n t i o n d u r i n g these programmes was d i r e c t e d towards e x p l o r a t i o n o f the Mount Read Volcanics i n the surrounding areas and the Gordon Limestone i n the Vale o f B e l v o i r has received scant a t t e n t i o n . Some 28 stream sediment samples have been analysed from the area: 21 by Pickands Mather, two by Union O i l , two by B i l l i t o n and two by Geopeko. Most reported low base metal values (< 20 g / t ) but three samples c o l l e c t e d by Pickands Mather around 406 500 m E, 5 400 300 m N had Zn values of 100 g/t and Pb values i n the range 50-90 g / t , w i t h r e l a t i v e l y h i g h assays f o r Cu, Co and N i .

Two samples analysed by B i l l i t o n around 408 200 m E, 5 401 500 m N also had r e l a t i v e l y h i g h Pb (82 and 32 g / t ) ; As (14 and 13 g / t ) and Ba (115 and 105 g/t) contents.

The former group o f anomalies i s i n an area u n d e r l a i n by Gordon Limestone and f l u v i o g l a c i a l g r a v e l s .

These anomalies are s i g n i f i c a n t given the g e n e r a l l y poor d i s p e r s i o n t r a i n s o f Cu, Pb and Zn stream sediment r e s u l t s i n areas w i t h peaty s o i l s , b u t d e r i v a t i o n o f the anomalies from the f l u v i o g l a c i a l deposits i s a p o s s i b i l i t y .

Reynolds F a l l s area EL 2/70

E x p l o r a t i o n commenced i n the area around Carters Prospect w i t h s o i l and rock chip geochemistry d e f i n i n g disseminated g a l e n a - p y r i t e m i n e r a l i s a t i o n over an area o f about 150 by 150 metres. Krummei (1970) concluded t h a t the m i n e r a l i s a t i o n was s t r a t i f o r m but had been reconcentrated along NW t r e n d i n g f a u l t s and breccias. Follow up g r i d d i n g and s o i l sampling showed t h a t the anomalies extended over a 5.4 km NE t r e n d i n g zone i n a narrow b e l t o f v o l c a n i c rocks between an i n t r u s i v e porphyry and Precambrian metasediments (Varley, 1971) . A wide spaced stream sediment survey from Anio Creek i n the south t o Mackintosh Creek i n the west was c a r r i e d out a t t h i s time but samples were analysed f o r copper, lead and zinc only. I n 1972 a h e l i c o p t e r borne aeromagnetic/EM survey i d e n t i f i e d f o u r conductors i n the area, but the survey was l a r g e l y r e s t r i c t e d t o the Cambrian rocks (Slade and Webster, 1972) . Follow up o f one o f these anomalies revealed a minor copper-lead-zinc s o i l anomaly and a l i m o n i t e - s t a i n e d s c h i s t b r e c c i a but the EM response was i n t e r p r e t e d t o be probably caused by g r a p h i t i c s c h i s t . At t h i s time the stream sediment survey was extended t o include the Ordovician rocks i n the Southwell River, Mackintosh Creek and t r i b u t a r i e s . Although low order anomalies were i d e n t i f i e d

i n the Vale River near i t s confluence w i t h E t c h e l l Creek and i n a southward f l o w i n g t r i b u t a r y o f Mackintosh Creek near 396 500 m E, 5 390 800 m N i t was considered t h a t the Ordovician and S i l u r i a n rocks were of l i m i t e d p o t e n t i a l (Krummei, 1972) and the l i c e n c e was subsequently reduced to cover mainly the Cambrian rocks.

Further f o l l o w up of the airborne EM anomaly over the Precambrian rocks by ground EM confirmed the conductor which was noted t o be c o i n c i d e n t w i t h a c o p p e r - l e a d - s i l v e r s o i l geochemical anomaly. The g r a p h i t i c s c h i s t model d i d not e x p l a i n why there i s a magnetic anomaly i n the area and a comprehensive geochemical sampling programme was recommended (Skey, 1973) . Follow up of the other airborne EM anomalies revealed they were probably caused by T e r t i a r y b a s a l t (Skey, 1974).

Follow up I.P. surveys were done over four l i n e s covering two of the Paringa lead s o i l geochemical anomalies and revealed weak anomalies c o i n c i d e n t w i t h the geochemistry. Reconnaissance d r i l l i n g was recommended (Skey, 1975). Trenching o f the anomalous areas was f o l l o w e d up w i t h p e t r o l o g y and rock chip geochemistry w i t h l e a d values t o 2400 g/t reported. I t was concluded t h a t the source of the anomalies was disseminated sulphides i n f i s s u r e s , but t h a t a source i n g l a c i a l scree might p a r t l y be responsible (Young, 1978).

E x p l o r a t i o n was continued from 1979 by Geopeko under a j o i n t venture agreement w i t h Aberfoyle. Geological mapping, and stream sediment geochemistry w i t h analyses f o r copper, lead, z i n c , i r o n , t i n , tungsten and g o l d (small p r o p o r t i o n of samples only ) was c a r r i e d out. Minor anomalous gold was r e p o r t e d from streams d r a i n i n g the porphyry and base metal anomalism mainly was found i n areas d r a i n i n g the Cambrian v o l c a n i c and sedimentary rocks east o f the porphyry. Anomalous t i n values to 425 g/t were recorded from Fleece Creek and a t r i b u t a r y t o the south which d r a i n an area south of Carter's Prospect and values up t o 165 g/t were recorded from the lower reaches of Tumbling Creek i n an area d r a i n i n g Cambrian porphyry and Ordovician sandstone (Herrmann, 1980).

D e t a i l e d g e o l o g i c a l mapping C h o r i z o n s o i l geochemistry over the Heap of Rocks (Prover 1) prospect was f o l l o w e d up by diamond d r i l l i n g of one 156 m diamond d r i l l hole under the peak lead s o i l anomaly. Twenty three metres of 0.14% lead, 0.14% zinc and 2.5 g/t s i l v e r were assayed from an i n t e r v a l of minor v e i n l e t p y r i t e - b a s e metal sulphide m i n e r a l i s a t i o n i n s i l i c e o u s s i l t s t o n e and zinc m i n e r a l i s a t i o n i n c l u d i n g 4 m of 0.6% Zn occurred f u r t h e r down the hole i n a b r e c c i a t e d lava c o n t a i n i n g q u a r t z - c h l o r i t e - s u l p h i d e v e i n l e t s (Herrmann, 1984).

A h e l i c o p t e r borne EM-magnetic (Dighem I I ) survey was flown over 1?he area i n 1979. Follow up o f most o f the anomalies was d i s a p p o i n t i n g , one was due t o b a s a l t , another could not be located on the ground and a t h i r d was j u s t west o f Carter's Prospect. Neither of the more s i g n i f i c a n t m i n e r a l i s e d zones (Carter's and Speeler Creek Prospects) were detected by the survey. A magnetic anomaly east of the Vale River (Prover 8) was found to be r e l a t e d t o hematite-maghetTte v e i n s , w i t h up t o 1600 g/t copper, i n t u f f s s t r a t i g r a p h i c a l l y above the major q u a r t z - f e l d s p a r - b i o t i t e porphyry (Herrmann, 1984).

Cyprus Minerals then j o i n t ventured i n t o the l i c e n c e as operators. An EM-77 electromagnetic survey was run over 7 loops covering the Heap o f Rocks, Carter's and Speelers Creek Prospects. Weak responses occurred over the three prospect areas and f o u r d r i l l holes were proposed to t e s t the anomalies (Jones, 1985). Follow up geochemistry showed a promising g o l d zone a t Speeler Creek (Jones, 1986) but t h i s was downgraded by re-assay and was assumed t o be due t o l a b o r a t o r y e r r o r (Jones, 1987). One of the f o u r holes was d r i l l e d a t the Speeler Creek Prospect, outside the CEG nominated area w i t h a 3 metre zone of 785 g/t Cu, 2600 g/t Pb, 260 g/t Zn and 2.5 g/t Ag i n a vuggy s i l i c e o u s zone i n f i n e t u f f . A downhole EM survey f a i l e d to detect any s i g n i f i c a n t o f f hole conductor and the area was r e l i n q u i s h e d (Jones, 1987).

EL 14/74

EL 14/74 was h e l d over Carter's Prospect. Comstaff Pty L t d c a r r i e d out g r i d d i n g , g e o l o g i c a l mapping and ground magnetics, s e l f p o t e n t i a l and Crone EM surveys over the g r i d . I n a d d i t i o n 135 A h o r i z o n s o i l samples were analysed f o r copper, lead, z i n c , molybdenum and barium and 19 rock samples were analysed f o r the above metals and s i l v e r . Best assays i n the gossan were 0.18% copper, 9.2% lead, 1.15% zinc, 880 g/t molybdenum, 1050 g/t barium and 80 g/t s i l v e r . I t was concluded t h a t the m i n e r a l i s a t i o n occurred as gash veins i n Precambrian host rocks. Although the m i n e r a l i s a t i o n i t s e l f was concluded t o have l i t t l e p o t e n t i a l , i t s presence enhanced the p r o s p e c t i v i t y o f the Cambrian rocks t o the west. Tourmaline was noted i n one v e i n (Rugless, 1976).

EL 46/80

EL 46/80 was taken up over Precambrian rocks i n the Heap o f Rocks area t o explore f o r t i n and tungsten. Anomalies generated by the Dighem I I survey were fo l l o w e d up w i t h l i m i t e d stream sediment geochemistry which revealed low order t i n and tungsten anomalies (Heithersay, 1982). A panned concentrate stream sediment survey, and l i m i t e d ground magnetics and C-horizon s o i l sampling were c a r r i e d out. Two panned concentrated tungsten anomalies o f 160 and 170 g/t were defined i n Fleece Creek j u s t upstream from Carter's Prospect (Pemberton and Sumpton, 1983).

EL 89/87

This l i c e n c e was taken out by CRA E x p l o r a t i o n but a l l e f f e c t i v e work was done by Aberfoyle under a j o i n t venture agreement. The Ten Mil e Creek G r i d o f the adjacent EL 24/84 was extended t o the NE t o examine the c o n t i n u a t i o n o f stockwork and v e i n hematite-gold m i n e r a l i s a t i o n i n the Bond Range Porphyry. F i f t y C h o r i z o n s o i l samples were analysed f o r copper, lead, arsenic, z i n c , gold, s i l v e r and i r o n . Weak to moderate copper anomalies ( t o 535 g/t were detected. Minor gold anomalies ( t o 0.068 g / t ) are associated w i t h c h l o r i t i c a l t e r a t i o n . I t was concluded t h a t hematite stockworks are surrounded by h e m a t i t e - c h l o r i t e a l t e r a t i o n anomalous i n copper and zinc and, t o a l e s s e r e x t e n t , gold. Conventional and b u l k cyanide leach stream sediment samples were c o l l e c t e d from the SE drainages of the Vale River between Ten M i l e and Tumbling Creeks. One anomalous sample was r e l a t e d to the h e m a t i t e - c h l o r i t e stockwork.

Three a d d i t i o n a l stream sediment samples and one b u l k leach sample were c o l l e c t e d i n the area near the Cradle Mountain Link Road. Two nearby samples assayed 130 g/t Pb, 205 g/t Zn and 1250 g/t Ba and 200 g/t Pb and 155 g/t Zn but 'were not considered anomalous'.

EL 90/87

EL 90/87 was taken out by B i l l i t o n A u s t r a l i a t o explore the Back Peak Beds between Mt Remus and the Speeler Ck Prospect. Stream sediment geochemistry ( i n c l u d i n g b u l k cyanide leach sampling f o r gold) was c a r r i e d out. Most anomalies could be r e l a t e d t o the known prospects, but some p o s s i b l y r e l a t e d t o the contact between the Back Peak beds and the Bond Range porphyry were not f o l l o w e d up. A d d i t i o n a l s o i l sampling was c a r r i e d out over the Carter's and Heap o f Rocks Prospects t o confirm previous anomalies and a 166 m hole was d r i l l e d a t the Speeler Creek Prospect over an EM and s o i l geochemical anomaly def i n e d by Cyprus. Minor disseminated z i n c - l e a d m i n e r a l i s a t i o n w i t h peak values of 0.23% lead, 0.21% zinc over 1.2 metres. Downhole EM surveying f a i l e d to detect an o f f hole conductor (Randell, 1988 and personal communication). F i e l d work t o explore the contact between the v o l c a n i c s and the Denison Group sedimentary rocks was considered, but was not c a r r i e d out and the l i c e n c e was r e l i n q u i s h e d (Randell, 1989).

Granite Tor area

EL 5/74

Following the discovery o f the Que River orebody, Cominco E x p l o r a t i o n Pty L t d (now Aberfoyle) took out t h i s l i c e n c e over the c e n t r a l r e l i n q u i s h e d s t r i p o f EL 2/70. An airborne magnetic/E.M. survey was flo w n over the area and a broad anomaly west o f Backwater Creek was regarded as due t o a l i t h o l o g i c a l response (Webster, 1975). Some stream sediment geochemical anomalies generated by Paringa i n the Backwater Creek-Romulus Pup-Fury River area were f o l l o w e d up w i t h g e o l o g i c a l mapping and stream sediment geochemistry. One anomalous sample had r e l a t i v e l y h i g h copper, lead, zinc and tungsten values (near 496 900 m E, 5 386 000 m N) but samples 50 m e i t h e r side were not anomalous and the anomaly was regarded t o be i n s i g n i f i c a n t (Rabone, 1975). The area was subsequently r e l i n q u i s h e d .

The area was taken out by Alcoa A u s t r a l i a w i t h the primary o b j e c t i v e s of e x p l o r i n g f o r quartz v e i n , greisen, carbonate replacement and skarn t i n -tungsten deposits i n the Granite Tor g r a n i t e p l u t o n and surrounding rocks. An aeromagnetic/radiometric survey was flown w i t h 200 t o 400 metre l i n e spacing and some 26 anomalies were i d e n t i f i e d ( S p e i j e r s , 1978). Follow up work i n v o l v e d water a n a l y s i s f o r f l u o r i n e , stream sediment geochemistry, rock chip geochemistry of the g r a n i t e and petrography of the g r a n i t e and adjacent calc-s i l i c a t e rocks ( S p e i j e r s , 1979a). Subsequent work i n v o l v e d d e t a i l e d m i n e r a l o g i c a l study of 286 heavy mineral concentrates combined w i t h chemical analyses f o r a broad s u i t e of elements, more water analyses f o r f l u o r i n e and photogeology (S p e i n j e r s , 1979b). Further photogeology and stream sediment sampling was c a r r i e d out and g r i d s were e s t a b l i s h e d over the B l u f f River t i n deposit and the Brougham River area east of Mt Swallow. Results from the B l u f f River area showed t h a t greisen m i n e r a l i s a t i o n was more extensive than p r e v i o u s l y known and a number of skarn u n i t s were de l i n e a t e d . I n the Mount Swallow area areas of anomalous tungsten, zinc and lead s o i l geochemistry were d e f i n e d near the margins o f the g r a n i t e . Further work i n both areas was recommended ( S p e i j e r s , 1980). S h e l l then entered i n t o a j o i n t venture agreement w i t h Alcoa and a major change i n e x p l o r a t i o n emphasis r e s u l t e d . A hel i c o p t e r - b o r n e magnetic/E.M. survey was flown over the western p o r t i o n of the l i c e n c e , i n areas mainly of Cambrian rocks, and 19 anomalies were f o l l o w e d up by g r i d d i n g , ground E.M. (mainly VLF, some GENIE), ground magnetics and s o i l , rock and stream sediment geochemistry. Most anomalies were found to be r e l a t e d t o l i t h o l o g i c a l causes. I n a d d i t i o n outcropping lead m i n e r a l i s a t i o n was discovered d u r i n g stream sediment sampling (Ray's Prospect) ( S p e i j e r s , 1982) . I n 1983 the eastern p a r t of the area was r e l i n q u i s h e d w i t h o u t completion o f the sampling i n the B l u f f River and Mt Swallow g r i d areas (Smyth, 1983a). D e t a i l e d f o l l o w up o f some of the Dighem anomalies focussed on a number of areas. These included the Romulus East Prospect ( q u a r t z - p y r i t e -a r s e n o p y r i t e veins w i t h elevated arsenic, lead, s i l v e r , bismuth and mercury values) , Backwater Creek where anomalous t i n and tungsten values were regarded as being due t o g l a c i a l sediments d e r i v e d from the g r a n i t e , the NE shore of Lake Mackintosh, where c h l o r i t e - p y r i t e veins were loc a t e d , as was lead-zinc anomalism i n limestone and Ray's Prospect. Most prospects were downgraded but d r i l l i n g was recommended a t two prospects and geophysics (EM and g r a v i t y ) was

mooted a t a f u r t h e r f o u r l o c a t i o n s (Smyth, 1983b). The f i n a l phase of e x p l o r a t i o n i n v o l v e d rock chip sampling i n the Lower Brougham v a l l e y and f u r t h e r stream sediment surveys i n the Anio Creek-Mt Remus area, Fury River-Backwater Creek and west o f Mt Swallow. Gold anomalies were re p o r t e d from Ten Mile Creek and Mt Swallow and t i n and tungsten values were re p o r t e d from a l l areas, but were b e l i e v e d to be due t o t r a n s p o r t e d g r a n i t e . The areas of anomalous gold were not thought t o represent major m i n e r a l i s a t i o n and the area was r e l i n q u i s h e d (Smyth, 1984).

ASSESSMENT

(a) Q u a l i t y o f data

Some 80% o f the area has been mapped a t scale s u f f i c i e n t l y d e t a i l e d f o r p r e l i m i n a r y mineral resource p o t e n t i a l assessment (1:63 600 or b e t t e r ) , b u t only about 25% has been mapped r e c e n t l y enough to allow c o n f i d e n t p r e l i m i n a r y assessment.

The southeastern 20% of the area, despite some u s e f u l s c a t t e r e d observations made d u r i n g the tenure of E x p l o r a t i o n Licence 2/78, has never been s y s t e m a t i c a l l y mapped ( F i g . 5 ) .

G r a v i t y coverage i s patchy. I t requires upgrading i n the Granite Tor area and p a r t of the Reynolds F a l l s area. Aeromagnetic data are adequate, but f u r t h e r work i s r e q u i r e d t o l i n k the various surveys.

A number o f a e r i a l E.M. surveys have been flown. The Granite Tor area and the b e l t o f post-Cambrian rocks between the areas of Mount Read Volcanics outcrop i n the Sophia River-Reynolds F a l l s area deserve f u r t h e r a t t e n t i o n .

Numerous geochemical surveys have been done. Most of these have been l i m i t e d i n elements analysed, and d e f i c i e n t compared w i t h c u r r e n t techniques.

E x p l o r a t i o n programmes i n the area have not been supported by s u f f i c i e n t d r i l l i n g . Only one d r i l l hole a t the Heap of Rocks Prospect has been s u f f i c i e n t l y documented. An e a r l i e r hole a t Carter's Prospect has not been logged, analysed or surveyed. I n general, recommendations to d r i l l have not been supported by management decisions i n e x p l o r a t i o n programmes and there has been no s t r a t i g r a p h i c or s t r u c t u r a l d r i l l i n g c a r r i e d out.

This p a u c i t y of data extends t o the understanding of known mineral deposits i n the area. For example, Krummei (1970) suggested t h a t m i n e r a l i s a t i o n near Carter's Prospect was o r i g i n a l l y s t r a t i f o r m but higher concentrations were l o c a l i s e d i n l a t e r WNW f a u l t s i n the Devonian. Rugless (1976) r e p o r t e d tourmaline i n a v e i n from the area r e i n f o r c i n g the i n t e r p r e t a t i o n of Devonian m i n e r a l i s a t i o n . Pemberton et al. ( i n press) summarised the data and concluded

t h a t Cambrian m i n e r a l i s a t i o n may have been remobilised i n t o Devonian f a u l t s d u r i n g Devonian g r a n i t e emplacement despite the i n t e r p r e t a t i o n o f Leaman and Richardson (1989) t h a t g r a n i t e l i e s a t a depth of more than 8 km near Carter's Prospect. On the other hand, Herrmann (1984) i m p l i e d t h a t the m i n e r a l i s a t i o n might be r e l a t e d t o emplacement of the Bond Range Porphyry i n the Cambrian. The unusual metallogenic a s s o c i a t i o n a t the Mt Remus prospect, and i t s i n t e r p r e t e d remoteness from Devonian g r a n i t e supports an a l t e r n a t i v e , novel suggestion. Mo, V and Co are elements known to be concentrated i n black shales together w i t h base and noble metals (e.g. Vine and T o u r t e l o t , 1970; various papers i n Geological Society o f America Abs t r a c t s , v. 22, pp. A11-A13, 1990). The occurrence of prospects w i t h i n the Precambrian rocks, Cambrian S t i c h t Range Beds c o r r e l a t e s and the Back Beds i s c o n s i s t e n t w i t h i n i t i a l metal concentrations i n Precambrian black shales w i t h l a t e r r e c o n c e n t r a t i o n d u r i n g porphyry i n t r u s i o n and Devonian f a u l t i n g . Devonian g r a n i t e emplacement may have played no s i g n i f i c a n t r o l e i n the m i n e r a l i s a t i o n h i s t o r y .

Such thoughts are pre-emptive and s p e c u l a t i v e , but emphasise the gaps i n knowledge of the g e o l o g i c a l h i s t o r y of the area. A c l e a r conclusion i s t h a t much more work i s r e q u i r e d t o enable a reasoned estimate o f the mineral resource p o t e n t i a l o f the area. Further petrographic, i s o t o p i c and ore genetic s t u d i e s are r e q u i r e d , i n a d d i t i o n t o the basic g e o l o g i c a l , geophysical and geochemical mapping c u r r e n t l y l a c k i n g .

One p a r t i c u l a r item impacts s t r o n g l y on the resource p o t e n t i a l o f the area. The p o s i t i o n of the s t r o n g l y m i n e r a l i s e d Henty F a u l t Zone has not been e s t a b l i s h e d n o r t h of Mount Cripps. Although i t has been suggested by Pemberton et al. ( i n press) t h a t i t l i e s underneath b a s a l t to the west o f the study area, i t remains p o s s i b l e t h a t the f a u l t l i e s beneath Quaternary a l l u v i u m and T e r t i a r y b a s a l t along the upper reaches of Mackintosh Creek.

I n summary, mineral e x p l o r a t i o n has been extensive, but somewhat s u p e r f i c i a l . This i s shown by the emphasis on airborne geophysical surveys and stream sediment geochemistry despite the p o t e n t i a l l y masking and confusing e f f e c t s of p o s t - m i n e r a l i s a t i o n rocks such as T e r t i a r y b a s a l t and Pleistocene glacigene sediments. I n a number o f cases promising anomalies have been incompletely d e l i n e a t e d , but programmes were aborted due t o changes i n metal p r i c e s . A good case i n p o i n t i s the work on t i n - t u n g s t e n m i n e r a l i s a t i o n c a r r i e d out by Alcoa on EL 2/78.

Past e x p l o r a t i o n i n the area has been hindered by the remoteness of the area and the l o g i s t i c a l d i f f i c u l t i e s and expense o f performing the work. Notwithstanding these problems, s t r i c t environmental standards should be a p p l i e d to f u t u r e e x p l o r a t i o n and mine development.

The p o t e n t i a l f o r the discovery and development of economic mineral resources i n the area warrants such an approach.

GEOLOGICAL MAPPING PROGRAMS

Estimated costs o f g e o l o g i c a l mapping programmes have been prepared.

The costs have been a r r i v e d a t i n the f o l l o w i n g way:

1. Costs are based on $300/skm which i s the standard g e o l o g i c a l survey cost f o r 1:50 000 scale mapping i n c l u d i n g f i e l d work, l a b o r a t o r y work and map productions.

2. The costs f o r each area are those r e q u i r e d t o update the g e o l o g i c a l mapping a t the 1:50 000 scale b e l i e v e d t o be s u f f i c i e n t f o r p r e l i m i n a r y assessment of these areas. As f a r as costs are concerned, t r a v e r s e mapping has been t r e a t e d a t the same r a t e as 1:50 000 scale mapping as the l o c a t i o n and d e f i n i t i o n o f basement rocks enclosed i n d o l e r i t e or Parmeener Group rocks i s req u i r e d .

GEOPHYSICAL COVERAGE - EXISTING AND REQUIRED

The e x i s t i n g coverage of geophysical data i s shown i n F i g . 6. I t i s considered t h a t the aeromagnetic data are adequate. Upgrading the g r a v i t y coverage t o one s t a t i o n per skm w i t h i n the area and t o a distance o f 5 km t o the east and to a d e n s i t y of one s t a t i o n per 9 skm from 5 t o 40 km to the east would r e q u i r e an a d d i t i o n a l 453 s t a t i o n s . At a cost of $195 per s t a t i o n , a l l o w i n g f o r the remoteness and topography o f the area, would r e q u i r e $88,300. Coverage o f the area t o the n o r t h i s adequate and f u r t h e r coverage r e q u i r e d to the south and west w i l l be addressed i n companion volumes o f t h i s s e r i e s .
