EMAIL, WEB, ARCHIVE SERVERS AND MFI NETWORK

WEB SERVER:- India Meteorological Department is maintaining website with URL: http://www.imd.gov.in .

The website is hosted in two servers with IP address 202.54.31.8 and 202.54.31.9 working in sharing mode.

The DNS is configured both at VSNL and at HQ servers also.

The website is updated from HQ as well as from outstations also. Probable faults and their rectification procedure are given below: TROUBLE SHOOTING 1. If http://www.imd.gov.in is not accessible from ISSD section (RTH) but Internet is accessible then

STEP1: Check the link between RTH PC and the server using ping command

# ping 202.54.31.8 #ping 202.54.31.9

If servers are not pinging then find the link using LAN SOP or call the network team. If servers are pinging but website is not accessible then

STEP2: Find the server disk space as root user using command

# df -k One script is running to archive delete the old access and error log file in every 9th minutes of 00hrs every day. If disk is full then inform the web administrator.

STEP3:

Page 5: Ministry of Earth Sciences INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT Information ...metnet.imd.gov.in/manuals_sop/chapter_15.pdf · INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT . Information System and

Restart http and named service using the command

#service http restart # Service named restart

And then look the output the commands given. If there is no error then open the http://www.imd.gov.in from the server itself . If it is not opening on server then find whether any other website is opening ex Google, yahoo etc. If not opening then find whether VSNL link is working or not using the LAN SOP. If VSNL link is not working then book the VSNL link. If VSNL link is working but http://www.imd.gov.in is not accessible then inform your Web administrator.

2. If the website is not accessible from SATMET /SEISMO division but accessible from ISSD division then follow the STEPs given below.

STEP1: Ask SATMET/ Seismo division whether they are able to open other website like Google, yahoo etc. If able to open then ask to check from other PC. If unable to open then ask

(a) to check from another PC. (b) Ask Seismo to access IMD website, if complain received from Satmet. (c) if seismo is able to open then ask satmet to see their internal network. (d) If both the sections are unable to open the internet as well as http://www.imd.gov.in then check the link between DGM and satmet building and follow the LAN SOP.

WEBSITE UPDATION

SEVERE WEATHER: A script has been written and running at both the web servers in every 7 minutes intervals to convert warning .dat to severe.htm file. The script is ./updatesevere.sh TROUBLE SHOOTING: If servere weather file is not getting uploaded then a) Find whether warning .dat is available at /var/www/html/section/nhac/dynamic folder. b) If this file is available then run the script manually and see there is any error or not. If there is any error then inform the administrator. c) If this file is not available under above folder then follow the same procedure as explained above for other products updated by NHAC/NWP division.

TROUBLE SHOOTING:- If there is any problem in connectivity between the servers then use ping and trace- route command from both the server for the corresponding ASA and router gateway IP. If it is pinging then ask the server administrator to check the administration. If it is not pinging then then see the cable, connector, IPs, Gateway etc.

These IPs are accessible from 192.168.2.0, 192.168.4.0 and 192.168.7.0 networks at IMD HQ Delhi. To check any link, at first that IP is to be routed to 192.168.2.254 (when trying from 192.168.2.0 network). To check any link from Delhi, at first WAN IP of Delhi ISP (172.50.16.174) is to be checked. If Delhi ISP WAN IP is down, then no other IP VPN Circuits will be accessible form Delhi. If Delhi ISP WAN IP is live, then only other IPVPN access point/station should be checked. To check an IPVPN access point, WAN or LAN IP of that access point can be checked by ping command. Before pinging the IP, that IP must be routed to 192.168.2.254 (when accessing from 192.168.2.0 network).

FTP SERVERS IMD HQ Delhi has a FTP Server which hosts NHAC products, GTS data etc. The IP address of that FTP Server is 192.168.12.159/125.21.185.11. This server is accessible from outside of IMD HQ through Internet. RADAR stations send gif images to this server through Internet when there is break down in IP VPN link. This FTP server is also used to receive city weather data through Internet. FTP Server 125.21.185.44 is used mainly by NHAC and NCMRWF to get GTS data. Transmet National sends GTS data to this FTP server. FTP Server 192.168.2.75/192.168.12.75 is in IP VPN Network and is used to receive raw as well as gif images of RADARs. Raw data of RADAR is taken by NHAC for their use and the gif images are sent to the FTP server 192.168.12.159. IMD web servers take RADAR images from 192.168.12.159 and put those images in website. FTP Server 192.168.1.99/202.54.31.12 is used to receive satellite and hydrology data which are fetched by IMD website to put those in IMD website. This server also receives city weather data of different cities. IVRS servers of different stations receive GTS data from their respective AMSS FTP Server. The easiest way to know the functions of a FTP server is to see its scheduler.

To check connectivity of any IVRS server, one can ping the IP of that IVRS server. For example, if one wants to check connectivity of Chennai IVRS server 1, then one should give the command ping 192.168.113.60 in the console. To check operation of IVRS server of a station, one has to call the direct telephone number of the IVRS server of that station. Connectivity of all the servers can be seen on central monitoring server at HQ.

IMD LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) The LAN diagram is given below:

IPs of L2 switches of DGM, SATMET and DDGM(UI) are 192.168.11.10, 192.168.11.200 and 192.168.11.100 respectively. All the gateways of different networks are configured in UTM. UTM can be accessed from 192.168.2.0 network by http://any_gateway_address. IPs of Internet Router and Internet router Switch are 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 respectively. The gateway of 192.168.2.0 network i.e. 192.168.2.201 is configured in firewall. Any switch or router can be accessed from its console. Two ISP AirTel and VSNL is connected to the Ethernet ports of cisco 3845 router. 192.168.20.0 Network is dedicated for NIC link users. Gateway for 192.168.20.0 network is 192.168.20.201. The NIC gateway 192.168.20.201 is not configured in UTM. It is configured in a separate router. NIC link is connected to the Ethernet port of that router (cisco 1800 series). To check connectivity of a PC/Server, the best way is to ping its gateway, 10.0.0.1 or 10.0.0.2.
