Reading comprehension
-Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
The tree is the largest of all plants. The tallest tree grows higher than a
thirty-storey building. Besides, many trees outlive other plants. Some trees live
for hundreds or even thousands of years. They are the oldest living things known.
People don't think of trees as they do of other plants which grow only a
short time and then die. People think of trees as if they would live forever. Year
after year, large old trees shade houses and city streets from the sun. Their
flowers fill the air with their smell in spring. Trees continue to grow as long as
they live.
A tree's leaves make food that keeps the tree alive and helps it grow
. When winter comes, many trees lose their leaves in autumn. Other trees keep
their leaves during the winter and so stay green all the year around . When
spring comes again, trees get new leaves and flowers again. These flowers grow
into new fruits.

Reading comprehension (6)
Read the following passage, then answer the questions below:
People use clocks to measure units of time that are shorter than natural units.
Natural units are the day, the month, and the year. The clock is a very old
invention. People designed many shapes of clocks according to their knowledge
and scientific abilities. Sundials, for example, were used in ancient times.
Sundials work by measuring shadows that are cast by the sun.
Mechanical clocks appeared in the 13th century in Europe. They work with
a system of moving gears. Now people typically use mechanical clocks or digital
clocks. Digital clocks show numbers on a screen. The numbers represent the
time. Some people use auditory clocks. Auditory clocks use language to tell the
time aloud. Computers also use clocks. Computers use internal clocks in order
to work properly. In today’s world, clocks are everywhere – in homes, schools,
offices, and public places. Many people live according to the clock. School days
start and end according to the clock. Airplanes take off and land according to
the clock. It is fun to imagine a world without clocks.
