WHY PRAY?
The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true
God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetor-ical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The
apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet,
knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The
poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and
make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once
said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door
down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow

Los “extranjeros” que Isaías menciona, los “gentiles” de que habla Pablo, o los “cananeos” que cita Mateo son llamados a
adorar en oración al verdadero Dios. Al escuchar las lecturas de hoy, tal vez nos sintamos tentados a preguntarnos: ¿Por qué
rezar? Es una pregunta retórica; se equipara a preguntar por qué han de hablarse los amigos o los enamorados besarse. Rezar
es una manera de relacionarnos con Dios, una manera de hablarle. Los apóstoles tuvieron la oportunidad de conversar en persona con Jesús encarnado. Nosotros tenemos la oportunidad
de hablar con Dios en la oración. Nuestra relación con él debe ser entusiasta; no puede ser pusilánime. John Donne, un poeta y

SAINT PIUS X (1835-1914) August 21 Presidential vetoes we understand. But imagine veto-ing a papal election! Yet in the conclave of 1903, the Archbishop of Cracow (ironically, a predecessor in that office of Karol Wojtyla, the future John Paul II) vetoed the leading candidate on the order of the Aus-tro-Hungarian emperor. Instead, the cardinals elected Giuseppe Sarto of Venice as Pius X, the first pope, after a succession of nobles and diplomats, to hail from humble origins. Nor did the papacy alter his endearing simplicity. Tailors eventually made his cassock cuffs detachable because he absentmindedly wiped his fountain pen on them, forgetting that his old black cassock had been replaced by papal white! Taking as his motto “To restore all things in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10), Pius condemned the theo-logical innovations called “modernism,” yet dramati-cally altered the then-common practice whereby peo-ple rarely received Communion for fear of unworthi-ness, mandating early First Communion and urging everyone to frequent reception. Refusing to bless troops Europe assembled in Saint Peter’s Square—“I bless peace, not war!”—he died brokenhearted as World War I engulfed Christian despite his peace-making efforts.

asumiendo el nombre de Esteban. Aunque fue el suce-sor de su padre, su meta era consolidar la unión de las
tribus en Hungría y para ello, la fe cristiana fue ele-mental. Siendo rey pidió al papa que enviara monjes
benedictinos de Alemania e Italia para predicar el Evangelio, mientras que él promovió la fe cristiana
con su testimonio de vida, su cuidado por los pobres, la renuncia al poder por el poder y mediante la con-
strucción de templos y mosaicos que, mediante el arte, presentaban las verdades de la fe cristiana. Su amor
por los pobres evitó que hubiera abusos contra ellos, o bien, que los miembros de su corte aspiraran a cargos de poder. Por su testimonio cristiano y cuidado por los pobres, el Papa Silvestre II lo coronó rey de Hungría y
es venerado, hasta la fecha, como su patrono.

Our new year for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults starts Tuesday, Sept. 15th at 7:00pm in the Social Hall.
RCIA is for non-Catholics interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, and becoming Catholic. RCIA also includes those who may have been baptized Catholic but may have never received the sacraments of Holy Communion and/or Confirmation.
We will also broadcast the class this year on Facebook Live, linking directly through our www.saintmichael.cc website, for anyone who would like to learn more about the Catholic faith.

2020 Atlanta Catechist Conference The Atlanta Catechist Conference is an annual gathering of volunteer catechists, core teams, Parish Catechetical Leaders, Youth Ministers, RCIA teams and Catholic school teachers. The event supports the ongoing formation and enrichment of these volunteers and lay ministry leaders who serve the Church’s mission of evangelization and catechesis. The day features national and local speakers leading workshops on theology, spirituality, methodology, and more. Participants can earn Catechist Certification Credit in the Archdiocese of Atlanta for all workshops attended.
While the live portion of the virtual conference will be on Saturday August 22, the pre-recorded conference presentations will be available on-demand starting Thursday August 20 at 12:00 pm.

Conferencia de Catequistas de Atlanta 2020 La Conferencia de Catequistas de Atlanta es una reunión anual de catequistas voluntarios, equipos núcleo, líderes catequéticos de la parroquia, ministros de jóvenes, equipos de RICA y maestros de escuelas católicas. El evento apoya la formación continua y el enriquecimiento de estos voluntarios y líderes del ministerio laico que sirven a la misión de evangelización y catequesis de la Iglesia. El día cuenta con oradores nacionales y locales que dirigen talleres sobre teología, espiritualidad, metodología y más. Los catequistas que son participantes de la Arquidiócesis de Atlanta pueden obtener crédito de certificación por todos los talleres en que asistieron.

Due to COVID-19 we will discontinue communal anointing of the sick every first weekend of every month. We are taking precautions to prevent the spread of any germs as much as we can. Any one who is in need of the sacrament can let the priest know after the mass.
