Visan different facesa human and diversified viticulture

Wine makers of Visan, all together represent 13 owners and 180 cooperative members. We have the entire range of ages for the job, from the thirties to sixties…. Born here or elsewhere, autodidacts, schoo-

led, families, siblings from the 1st to the 12th generation of men of the wine.We took over a thousand different paths to the vines.

From the veterans to the rookies, from the old-fashioned to the modern, from the star names to the discreet talents, from pragmatics to the idealistic…. Our vision of our job is not heard in one-voice!

This diversity of stories and personalities is the first step to the beautiful experience. An encounter full of life and openness, full of richness and the strength

of character of Visan’s people.

• Respect of the soils and the vines: Running the vineyard with a presence and thoroughness in each moment is our primary passion. Reasoned culture keeps us together, and some of us have chosen to go for bio and biodynamic. To produce a nice and healthy harvest is the essence of our job, since a nice grape is essential in the work of the wine.• Humility of the “know how”: For us, man is not all. The wind, rain and sun, the soils and grape varieties, the nature and even the cosmos work for us. To know our job, we never forget to reinterpret it with every vintage.• Loyalty to the terroir: in the vineyard like in the cuverie, we keep listening to what is being said by our landscape, our slopes, and our scrubland. If we all make service to the quality and the identity of our appellation - each domain has its sunlight expo-sure nuances, each parcel its unique geological message - we express them in our wines with our winemaker’s sensibi-lity.• Sincerity in vinification: If each of us has its own method to make wine, we have in common the confidence in nature, the willingness to return all the equilibrium and typicality. The minimal intervention in the vat, we elaborate only as necessary, with a traditional approach

Here, there, everywhere…. We have an appointement togheter

When we talk about us…. We talk about our wines. For a beautiful experience with Visan’s winemakers andtheir production, all of our domains have their cellars open year round. Some of them offer a bed and breakfast, for the serious wine traveller. Many of our wine cellars are open for a visit andwe are always there to talk about our craft. The Coteaux de Visan wine cellar has a wine tasting facility open for culturalevents and art exhibitions. We travel throughout France and the world to meet our clients.

Neighbour of Saint-Maurice, Cairanne, Rasteau and Vinsobres, Visan is a village of 1915 inhabitants, situated in the south of the Popes enclave, between the Comtat Venaissin and the Drome province.

In this monumentally historical territory, these vineyards, present since the 3rd century, occupy half of the area’s 4107hectares, and have been producing wine for 700 years. Built during the 13th century, the Our Lady of

the Vines chapel has written in its choir this inscription: “posuerunt me custodem in vinoe” “They put me here, guardian of their vineyards…”

Our elders, like us, had the “vanguard soul”: In 1250, Visan had its own communal press where the grapes weretaken. Created in 1475 by our winemaker’s ancestors, the Saint Vincent de Visan brotherhood was the very first in theregion. Pioneers of the appellation AOC Côtes-du-Rhône, our village joined the appellation on its birthday the 19th of No-vember 1937, and received one of the first communal appellations: Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, in November 1966.

The history of VISAN has left a generous heritage. In the village, a nice patrimony from the middle ages to the 18th century. On the landscape side, a robe of vines set in an amphitheater of warm, colourful and bright slopes. The beautiful experience begins on

the very first sight of these wine tourism open places.

Populated during the Paleolithic period, founded by a Roman legion, Visan played host to the top of Provencal high-society during the middle ages, such as The Templars of Richerenches, and later came under the ownership of ViennesePrince John II. The village was then a major stronghold. You can still see a few vestiges of the Prince’s Chateau, along with twogates and a part of the fortifications. From 1327 to 1345, Visan was the mint of Princes, making most notably the golden Flo-rin, silver mark, and old money. Bought by the Holy See of Avignon, Visan became a Papal land for nearly 7 centuries, duringwhich time was built the Pontifical fortification and a group of private renaissance and baroque hotels that today make up theheart of the village. From the 19th to the first half of the 20th century, Visan installed public services and had an important In-dustrial activity. Today, the village develops thanks to its patrimonial nobility and its great vineyards.

The best way to discover VISAN’s patrimony is to walk through the St Martin’s gate, passing by the ancient streets, char-ming façades, fountains and underground passages, going by Hotel Pelissier, one of the most beautiful architectural buildings of the Pope’s enclave, and by the St Peter’s church.VISAN’S landscape can be best appreciated if you go to the summit of the relief which emerges from the village, and which wears the ruins of the Chateau. The panorama over the roofs is magnificent. The orientation tableshows: Valréas to the north, Mont Ventoux and the Montmirail Lace to the south, Lance and Angèle mounts to the east. Orange in south-west, The Rhone to the west. From the heights of the vast amphitheater which embraces Visan, the vines resemble rolling waves as far as the plain, surrounded by forests of Aleppo pine, greenoak, and century old olive trees, and a scrubland with lavender and “broom” flavours. All the elegance of a Florentine Pro-vence.

This is where our wines bloom

Before the wine, even before the vine, there is the sky and the earth. In this very specific terroir of the Pope Enclave, Visan gets the finest conditions of soil and climate: Numerous soils with variable dosages of clay and sea pebbles, a south-western sun exposure with plains in

the west and terraced slopes on the east, and a Mediterranean climate excellent for healthy grapes.

Exposures, landforms, soils, spaces for light and windVisan has a thousand ways to please the vineyard. Creating a nice place for a beautiful experience

with our exceptional terroir, whose multiple facets promise subtle and seductive wine.

24000 millenniums made our terroir what it is today. The Miocene period was the beginning: The Mediterranean Sea co-vered the Rhone valley, meeting the rivers rolling down the young mountains of La Lance and the Ventoux, taking withthem large quantities of sand and clays captured by the coastal currents. These sediments preceded others….• Rockier Quaternary alluvium, brought by the rivers that go through or around the village today (Ez, aygues, Corone, Herein) accumulated some to a thickness of some 600 meters, filling in the sea and making today very delicatesandstones, or sedimentary formations that make the basis of the wine hills of the village. • A 100 meter thick slice of gravel and clay, spread out by the rivers 10 million years back.

This long history has given to our terroir a very fine composition, such as sandy soils, lime and clay, or rocky sedi-ments. Everywhere remains several fundamental qualities: Good soil aeration for effective drainage without damagingthe nutritive combination between earth and the vine. The slagging action of the sea stones, protecting the vines fromfrost. A permanent water reserve that the clays give back to the grapes when come the summer heat.To these three virtues of Visan’s soil, responds three virtues from the sky:A strong Mistral dries the vineyards. Seasonal rains (spring and fall). Abundant sunshine during the two dry seasons (short one in winter and long one in summer with very high temperatures).

Our vineyards, in some places one century old, combine grape varieties from the south (Black or white Grenache, Mourvèdre, Clairette, Cinsault and Bourboulenc) with grape varieties

from the north (Syrah, Roussane, Marsanne, and Viognier). The nuances of the terroir and cultural methods of vinification present in a mosaic of special cuvees the qualities

of the AOC Côtes-du-Rhône villages Visan - mainly in red, but also in white and rosé.

Gourmand, aromatics, suave, concentrated . . . Our wines express the different character of each domain or parcel, keeping a coherent quality profile, freshness and fruit.

The beautiful experience intensifies due to the honesty of the product and the sensorial pleasures realized.

Visan wines seduce when young, yet have a long aging potential - up to 10 years for the reds.On the nose, the delicacy of aromas for the reds exhibit a little black fruit dominance, liquorice and mixed spices andherbs, ranging from pepper to scrubland. New nuances and aromatics appear during aging, such as leather or truffle.More limited in production, whites and roses frolic with floral notes and summer fruits. In the mouth, the wines have anice tannic structure - fine, rounded and silky - and a nice balance between roundness, power, acidity and sugar.

Art Mas is a new domain created in 2009 by a young independent wine maker, Xavier Combe, from a portion of the century-oldfamily business, thus far dedicated to the cooperative. Influenced by Jean-Henri Fabre’s research and by its live nature laboratorynamed Harmas (which means wild garden in Provence), Xavier Combes takes the spirit of it confirming his philosophy of the job, mixing viticulture, biodiversity, and the expression of terroir.

Art Mas is 7 hectare, old-vines vineyard, situated on south-south-east exposure. With the conversion towards biological agriculture(in process) and bio dynamic viticulture (in preparation), the cultural method is a respect of nature, the idea of the free earth, andthe development of an eco-system around the vineyard. Organized like a place to live, in balance and equilibrium, the domain iscultivated like a wild garden where vines, native plants and new plantations done by Xavier Combes (Olive trees, lavender…) so-metimes live together. Fauna and flora are considered a real help in the protection of the vineyard. Of shallow lime and clay marlstoneorigin, the soil is worked with traditional methods, with the right tools depending on the parcel’s topography. The entire harvest is done by hand and then destemmed.

.........................The vineyard and its harvest

Vinification is done parcel by parcel, in a gravity concrete or stainless steel tank, using native yeast. For rosé, a direct press isfollowed by a sedimentation period, then fermentation at 17 C° for 2 or 3 weeks. For the classic red, the Grenache is done under acold maceration, for a week preceding a 3 week alcoholic fermentation. Cuveé Parure is from a special parcel, vinified in a woodentruncated tank, with an aging in half barrel size for the Syrah. • Cuvee Dance Flavor (rose): a shiny robe, rosewood coloured, with an intense and pleasant nose of fresh berries and candiedstrawberry flavours; finishing on a citrus touch, which we’ll find again in an unctuous and rich mouth, with raspberry, redcurrantand roses…• Cuvee Classic (red): an intense garnet robe, a fresh and full red fruit nose with jam, mixed with a few spicy notes, showing com-plexity and an aromatic power that you’ll find again in mouth, balanced by smooth tannins.• Cuvee Parure (red): an intense ruby robe, with a powerful spicy nose of jammed fruits; all of this embraced by a pleasant andfine vanilla flavour. In the mouth, the tannins are smooth and soft.10, 50 to 18 euros range (public price).

Grandsons of Clement Depeyre (co-founder of Tulette’s cooperative) and sons of Henri, John Paul and Gerard Depeyre have beenin Visan since 1972, the year they bought a magnificent farm dating back from the 16th century. During this time, the domain washalf planted in vines. The two brothers and their father expanded it in order to create the Clos du Pere Clement, one of the two firstindependent domains of the appellation Cotes du Rhone Village Visan. Nowadays, Gerard is in charge of the vines, and John Paul isconcentrated on vinification and marketing.

The Clos is situated on Visan’s best location called “Notre Dame” next to a Roman Chapel on 22.5 hectares of southward facingslopes composed of a rocky lime and clay soil. Cultivated with extreme care, with a bio-conversion in the near future, the vine issubjected to careful selection, by parcel and by the grape’s maturity, before harvesting. The harvest is done by machine, with adestemming machine in order to get a perfect result, and hermetic stainless steel trailers to carry the grapes to the winery.

Founded in 1897 by Ferdinand Delaye, pioneer of Visan wines and artisan of great notoriety, the cooperative was in the beginning a private affair, where the winemakers took in their harvest. The real cooperative was born in 1937 under the initiative of Paul Roux and the management of Jean Ordener. The cellar’s dynamism and the quality of it job helps Visan to be oneof the first communes classified as Appellation communal Cote du Rhone Village, in 1967.That year, the cave acquired the necessaries to unify the vinification of Visan’s wines. It is allowed to select the harvest, making a tough selection, and the possibility to work the terroirs and the grape varieties separately. During the following years in-vestments continue, with, for example in 1977, a row of vats for the vinification of the Volabis quarter; in 1987 the creation of the Cave Saint-Vincent, with stable temperature galleries dug in the rock; the creation of a new atelier for the vinification in 1995, and the 2001 renewal of the bottling line with a capacity of 6000 bottles/hour. The cave has installed theparcel’s selection in 1992 and the 2010 vintage will be certified as a biological agriculture for a portion of the production. In 2000,the Cave obtained the AFAQ certification for the quality assurance ISO 9001 norm.

Coteaux de Visan Cave has 180 members, and their vineyards cover 13,000 ha ( 200 ha certified biological agriculture) The lime and stone slopes rich in tumbled sea stones, facing sun, welcome the red wine grapes varieties; the sand clay slopes arededicated to the rosé, while the limey terroir with sandy micro areas is for the whites. All of these vineyards are harvested by hand, with a tough selection being made by grape variety, terroir, and climate. Since 1999, the wine technicians of the Cave have been incharge of the vineyard, helping and offering guidance to the wine makers for not only the phytosanitary tracking and reasoned agri-culture, but also environment protection. He is also responsible for the selection of the parcels for inclusion in the appellation Cotes du Rhone Village Visan. The installation of a biological agriculture on 200 ha of the vineyards is a logical continuation of the reasoned culture project and the respect of nature, which began a few years back.

Created in 1475 by the Visan’s winemakers, anxious to pay tribute to their Patron saint, the brotherhood was the first one in theregion. Abolished during the wars of religion, born again in January 1979, under the winemaker’s impetus. Since 30 years, master-winemakers of the brotherhood work in order to pass down to the future generations the ancestral traditions that make Visan aquality symbol.Composed of 25 members, the Brotherhood holds two events, called “chapitres” per year. The first, in winter, is held on the Saturdaynearest to the 22d of January. The second one is held in the summer, on the second Saturday of July.During the winter’s chapitre, members of the brotherhood select their best cuvee, made from old vines planted by their ancestorson the very sunny slopes, and harvested by hand for several generations. These cuvees will know two prestigious destinies. The StVincent will age 12 to 18 month in oak barrel in the magnificent cellars of the same name; the Marots will produce about 5000magnums walled during a year in the cellars of the Visan’s castle.During the summer’s chapter, these magnums are released by the King, the Queen, and the lieutenant of the brotherhood, eachelected by the winemakers. Both Chapitres are concluded with a dance/dinner with a band (in January) and a typical Provencaldinner (in July), open to the public, on reservation only.

The 1582 cadaster indicates that vines existed on the lands that today constitute the domain. Recomposed during the 1960’s, itwas bought by Marianne and Marc Fues in 1994. The production was for bulk, but the couple decided to create different cuvees, and evolve the culture of the vines, the different grapes varieties, the storage, and the cellar. Originally from Zurich, member ofFemmes Vignes Rhone (a group of women winemakers in the Rhone Valley) Marianne Fues is now actively managing the domain.

The vines average about 40 years old, thevines are worked with reasoned culture, heading towards biological methods, with grassing to avoid erosion. The full expression of the terroirs is the goal of Domaine Roche-Audran. Parcel by parcel, the vinification and the aging are done, until the bottling is conducted by the cosmic rhythms. Cold maceration lasts a few days in concrete vats or tronconique barrels of French oak. The native yeasts bring all the aromas oftheir terroir during the alcoholic fermentation, accompanied by punching, pumping over and light de-capping. A long maceration below 30C°, from 60 to 90 days, coats the fruit and tannins. The pressing of the grapes under a low pressurewill ring in the beginning of the aging in oak barrels, tronconiques and concrete vats for a few months before blending.• Cuvees Pere Mayeux 2004, 2005, 2007 (red): from old vine parcels, this cuvee expresses the harmony, power, and freshnessof scrubland earth.• Cuvees Visan 2004, 2005, 2007 (red): This cuvee expresses an epicurean and fruity character with spicy notes.7 to 15 euros TTC range for public price
