Rabbinic Search—Here’s the Plan . . .

You may be wondering what the Board is doing to make sure

rabbinic services are available after Rabbi Manewith moves

back to Chicago at the end of June.

The Board of Directors would like to share the plan we have

developed and some of the reasoning behind these decisions.

First, with Rabbi Manewith’s departure over the summer we

are not within the “normal” rabbi hiring timetable. Most

Rabbis are “on the job” or on vacation during July, so they

are refreshed and renewed before the High Holy Day season.

(Continued on page 4)

Rabbi’s Column Rabbi Toby Manewith Five years ago, Newsweek magazine published its first “Top

50 Rabbis” list. The idea was devised by Michael Lynton of

Sony Pictures and Gary Ginsberg, of Time Warner Inc.

Among criteria for inclusion on the original list were:

celebrity, leadership ability, political influence, media

presence, constituency size, and contribution to the Jewish

and general communities.

From its debut in 2007, the list has drawn fire. Critics have

suggested, among other things, that the compilers (now

including Abigail Pogrebin and Raphael Magarik) are neither

social anthropologists nor scholars of American Judaism, that

—because of the measures they’ve used—the list is light on

congregational rabbis, and that the criteria they’ve used to

measure value doesn’t reflect what the majority of American

Jews value in their own communal and spiritual leaders.

Rabbi Rachel Gartner, had the following to say in a recent

article written for the Huffington Post:

“Intentionally or not, the Top 50 Rabbis list lends legitimacy

to forces in our broader culture that directly undermine core

values of Jewish life . . . Rabbis are called to see, draw out

and celebrate that which is holy in every person, and to fan

the sparks of that which is meaningful in every life. We

write, counsel, teach and preach that what matters most

profoundly in life is who and how we are in the world, not

how many awards we win. We encourage the pursuit of deep

passions over chasing recognition, status or rank. We

emphasize life’s abundant blessings, not that medals—

available only to the lucky few—equal meaning.”

The people behind myjewishlearning.com took a different

approach. They initiated a contest in which they invited

readers to nominate their rabbis. They whittled this list down

to twenty—the vast majority of whom work in

congregations—and will award the top vote-getter with nice

dinner and a massage. Admittedly, some of the people on

this years’ “Top 50 Rabbis” list would be eligible for this

prize; in a change from past lists, 3 of the top 5 rabbis on this

year’s list work in congregations.

Though a massage would be nice, that’s not why most rabbis

are in the game. Gartner continues: “Countless rabbis

you’ve never heard of have gained profound satisfaction and

an unquantifiable sense of purpose in the intrinsically

rewarding activities of their life’s work. They have found

abundant blessings off the list, in lives lived in pursuit of

what they care about most deeply.”

This is true for me, and in recent years, due in large part to

you. For me, it’s not about public recognition, but about the

small moments. As I prepare for my next adventure, I’d like

to share a few of these with you. It’s my way of thanking

you for the abundant blessings working with all of you at Bet

Mishpachah has afforded me over these past three years.

It was my honor to be part of a vigil for the victims of a

shooting at the Aguda in Tel Aviv just weeks after I came to

Bet Mish. Eighteen months later, I participated in a similar

vigil, also in Dupont circle, this time in honor of World AIDS

Day. Seeing you in the crowd, in boiling hot and freezing

cold temperatures warmed my soul in the face of terrible

tragedy. On the day that same-sex couples could legally

obtain marriage licenses in DC, I sat at my computer and

wept as I watched members of our congregation waiting in

line. A few days later I married other members in a small

ceremony in their home. I have had the privilege of

officiating at half a dozen marriages since then and each one

has been incredibly poignant.

Weddings just begin the life cycle list. I began my tenure

with the congregation at a bris, and just weeks shy of my

departure, I named that young man’s sister. Witnessing

people create family in many different ways has certainly

been a joy. Watching those families grow and change is also

rewarding. I had that opportunity as a young man chose our

congregation for in which to become a bar mitzvah.

I’ve loved all of the wonderful moments before or after

services when people ask for “one minute” which often leads

to many more of deep conversation about God, or family, or

tattoos or the afterlife. Perhaps what will be remembered as a

highlight will come as a surprise to many. Leonard Cohen’s

Halleluyah has long struck a deep spiritual chord; I have

always thought it would be perfect at High Holiday Services.

Hearing it sung then was a dream come true.

So, please know that you have my gratitude, for all you’ve

done to make my work everything Rabbi Gartner suggests it

should be.

As you move forward, I know you will do the same for

whomever you choose next.

Adult Story-telling Brunch May 20

th, 2012

Don’t miss the Adult Story-telling Brunch, May 20, 11:30 –

1:30, at the DCJCC, sponsored by the Bet Mishpachah

education committee.

Our storyteller, Bob Rovinsky, has been telling stories for

more than 25 years. He is a founding member of the “Voices

in the Glen” Storytelling guild (www.voicesintheglen.org),

who provides storytelling to groups and events throughout

the Washington DC area.

Bob has merged his passion for storytelling with his interest

in folk dancing and modern dance and studied under Liz

Lerman, an internationally known choreographer and director

of a professional company of dancers in Washington, D.C.

He has performed at synagogues, birthday parties, and other

events. His repertoire includes stories from all over the

world, and span folk tales, true stories, wisdom tales and

stories with a moral point.

On May 20th, Bob will weave information about the

importance of storytelling in Jewish tradition, and what

makes a story “Jewish,” into stories from different religious,

cultural and ethnic origins. He will also focus on our value

for this year and share stories about compassion.

This is an event you won’t want to miss. Free to members,

$5 for non-members in advance. RSVP to

[email protected] by May 14 for this unique opportunity.

Therefore the Board decided that we would look for and hire an interim

rabbi for a transitional term of one year. After the 2012 High Holy Day

season is behind us, we will plan our next step towards identifying a

permanent Rabbi, who will join us in July 2013.

Both Rabbi Manewith and Rabbi Saks have been helping the Board

identify candidates for the interim position, and the position has been

posted on JewishJobs.com. We have already heard from several local

candidates and some not-so-local clergy who have submitted their

resumes.

During the first half of May, a committee of board members will review

the submitted information and select candidates for further consideration.

During the second part of May and in June, we will invited a few of them

to lead a service and speak with some of our members. We will let you

know ahead of time when Shabbat services will be led by those who are

being considered so you may plan to attend.

The Board will then deliberate and will make an offer to the most

qualified candidate. We hope the candidate we select will be able to start

in July or August and participate in High Holy Day services in

September. We will also schedule times in August for the congregation

to meet with the interim rabbi selected.

That’s the short term plan. We have the benefit of the work that was

done by the Rabbinic Search Committee a few years ago that has enabled

us to confidently approach this interim solution.

In an effort to keep everyone up to date, we are planning to hold two

extra congregational meetings; the first on August 11, after Shabbat

services, and on October 21. We will also provide information at the

Annual Meeting, which is scheduled for December 9th.

Members of the local Rabbinic community are aware we are looking for

a Rabbi, and several have generously put forth names of others they think

we should contact. If you know anyone you think should apply for the

position, have them email their resume to Jack Hillelsohn, Vice President

of Religious Affairs at [email protected].

Shavuot Service and Study Saturday May 26, 2012

Shavuot is one of the three harvest festivals in the

Jewish calendar of holidays. Shavuot is also

associated with the anniversary of receiving the

Torah at Mount Sinai.

Two of the traditions associated with Shavuot are

eating dairy and a tikun leil Shavuot (an all night

study session on the first evening of the holiday).

There are many explanations why we eat a dairy

meal on Shavuot. One explanation is that in

ancient times a sage discovered that the initials of

the four Hebrew words in Numbers 28:26

describing the sacrificial meal offering for

Shavuot spell out the Hebrew (mei halav) for

“milk,” suggesting that dairy food is the

acceptable dinner for the holiday. Another

explanation is that at Sinai, the Israelites were

considered as innocent as newborns, whose food

is milk.

The custom of learning all night shows our

eagerness to accept the laws of the Torah, the

giving of which is associated with Shavuot.

We live in a modern world, and the revelation at

Sinai did not have to compete with the Memorial

Day Weekend. For a taste of the study sessions,

our regular Saturday morning service on May

26th will be extended a bit to allow for a study

session during the usual Kiddush luncheon

following services. For those still in town over

the weekend, there will be an atcbm with

information about some of the tikun leil Shavuot

going on in the metropolitan DC area.

June 10, 2012.

Please let Keith Cohen ([email protected])

know the two-hour slot you can help with:

**10 am to noon (plus some help setting up)

**Noon to 2 pm

**2 pm to 4 pm

**4 pm to 6 pm (plus some help closing down)

This is a great way of discovering new

members and talking up our congregation.

Thank you for your help!

Bet Mishpachah’s Giving Recognized by the Wider Community

Bet Mishpachah received thank-you letters from beneficiary

organizations of our tz’daka. Donations were made from the

Richard Krampf Social Action Fund. A big thanks to our

members, who sustain this fund through their donations.

The House of Ruth for our donation of $1,250 from the

Purim collection. Bet Mishpachah is now a member of

their President’s Circle and will be listed in their Annual

Report.

Northern Virginia Chavura

The sun was shining and there was a slight breeze at the Delaware shore.

It was a perfect early evening for the Northern Virginia Chavura event in

Lewes, DE. Fourteen members and friends came from far and wide to

attend this Chavura event on April 21st. Three people carpooled from

Northern Virginia, two came from Southern Maryland, and the rest

maintain weekend and/or permanent homes in the Lewes/Rehoboth area.

The evening began with appetizers and lots of conversation, as some of

the attendees only see each other at High Holy Day services. We

continued with a pot-luck dinner that included such items as baked

salmon, black rice with quinoa, spinach and walnut salad, and lots more.

The dessert course consisted of pie, brownies, and cookies. Of course, no

one was hungry after that. Because the sun did not set until approximately

8 pm, the Havdala service was held after dinner.

The participants were so excited to have the opportunity to catch up with

each other that they decided to forego the featured movie and to continue

with the conversation. A joyful evening ended with all of us dancing to

music from the 1980s.

None of this would have been possible without the effort of Barbara and

LySandra, our wonderful hosts for the evening. So to them we all say

THANK YOU!

SMYAL (Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League) for

our donation of $500 from our annual tz’daka. The

donation will support the Women’s Leadership Institute

and the Community Outreach and Education Program.

PEF Israel Endowment Funds for our donation of $500

from our annual tz’daka. The donation will support the

Jerusalem Conservatory Hassadna for “Risk to

Opportunity, Music Education for Children of Ethiopian

Descent.”

Have You Read a Good Book Lately? Tell Us About It!

The High Holy Day services and

study session showed that, as a

congregation, we are reading a

variety of wonderful and interesting

things.

Have you read a really interesting or

challenging book on GLBTQ or

Jewish themes? Want to tell your congregational family

about it? We want to publish your review.

Your review should include your name (as you’d like it to

appear) and the title and author of

the book. Tell us: what led you, as a

GLBTQ Jew or ally, to read this

book? What was the most important

thing you learned? Why should

members of our congregation read

it? Feel free to structure your

review in a way that works for you.

Your review should not exceed 400

words.

Please submit your review to [email protected], by

the 10th of the month; after any necessary edits, your review

will be printed the next month, or as soon thereafter as there

is room.

From The Archives By Joel Wind, Archivist

This month in Bet Mishpachah history: May

In May 1982, David Green was President. There were 128

paid members. A hike on the first of the month attracted only

5 members and the board wondered about the decline in

program attendance, and encouraged its members to attend

Shabbat services and mingle with the congregation. The

monthly Women’s Outreach Potluck Supper took place on

the first Friday evening and a joint Oneg Shabbat with the

Ecumenical Conference for Gay and Lesbian Christians took

place in the middle of the month. An auction to benefit the

Housing Fund was held with a champagne viewing before the

bidding began. Shavuot was celebrated with a Erev Shabbat

service and a Saturday morning service where the Book of

Ruth was read. Lunch followed the service.

In May 1992, Suzanne Wandersman was President. The

monthly Women’s Outreach took place with a catered Israeli

dinner and Michelle Zavos from the Mary Helen Mautner

Project for Lesbians With Cancer as guest speaker. The

Book Group discussed A.B. Yehoshua’s Conversations in

Jerusalem. Rabbi Saks continued his workshop on Halachah

and Homosexuality and Mona Decker continued her

Educational workshop. The board voted to negotiate a lease

with National City Christian Church and to divide this year’s

tz’daka between SMYL and the Herzliya Battered Women &

Child Center. The board also renewed Rabbi Saks’ contract.

A congregational potluck dinner was held prior to the Friends

and Family Shabbat service with the Lesbian and Gay Chorus

of Washington in concert. At the annual meeting, Suzanne

Wandersman remained as President. Finally, a Theater Party

and Brunch took place featuring Falsettoland at the Studio

Theater.

In May 2002, Milton Stern was president. Scott Reiter

received the First Annual Dace Stone Volunteer of the Year

award. The board agreed to allow DC Minyan to use the Ark

and Torah Scrolls for their Saturday Morning services. The

Bereavement Support Committee requested that the

newsletter resume listing the yartzeits in the newsletter; they

had previously been removed to save space. The monthly

Women’s Program featured Rabbi Berner who led the

discussion on the book Lesbian Rabbis: The First

Generation and Rabbi Saks continued his “Jewish History”

class. Finally, Yom Yerushalayim and Shavuot were

celebrated with Shabbat services.
