I) Introduction

During my study in an engineering school in France, I had to do an internship abroad for 3 months (12 weeks). My abroad mission was realized in a metallurgy company named “Spriotech-SRD” situated in United Kingdom (Sawtry). It was really important for me to go to an English spoken country to improve my English language to get 785 points at TOEIC TEST. This test is really important because if we haven’t this score we can’t get our engineer level. Our objectives are to discover another culture in a foreign country (language, people, life, architecture…) and we it allows us discover a different company than our French one.

II) Country

A) Location:

The company where I have worked was situated in Cambridgeshire County in Sawtry. This city is very small and it’s really hard to find a flat or a house there, as a result I lived in Cambridge.

B) Cambridge Cambridge is famous because it’s a university city. It is situated on the River Cam about 50 miles (80 km) north of London. Cambridge is home to over 124,000 people, including 25,000 students.

The University of Cambridge, founded in 1209 is one of the top five universities in the world. The university includes the Cavendish Laboratory, King's College Chapel, and the Cambridge University Library. King’s college:

King's College was founded in 1441 by Henry VI (1421-71) and is one of the 31 colleges in the University of Cambridge.

King's College Chapel is regarded as one of the greatest examples of late Gothic English architecture. It has the world's largest fan-vault, the chapel's stained-glass windows and wooden chancel screen are considered has some of the finest from this area. The building is seen as emblematic of Cambridge. The chapel's choir, composed of male students at King's and choristers from the nearby King's College School, is one of the most accomplished and renowned in the world.

River Cam:

The River Cam is the main river flowing through Cambridge in eastern England. The total distance from Cambridge to the sea is about 40 miles (64 km) and is navigable for punts, small boats, and rowing craft. In Cambridge it is possible to sail (punting) and you can see the most famous universities there.

Mathematical Bridge:

The Mathematical Bridge is the popular name of a wooden footbridge in the southwest of central Cambridge. It bridges the River Cam and connects two parts of Queens' College. Its official name is simply the Wooden Bridge. The bridge was designed by William Etheridge, and built by James Essex in 1749. It has been rebuilt on two occasions, in 1866 and in 1905, but has kept the same overall design. Although it appears to be an arch, it is composed entirely of straight timbers built to an unusually sophisticated engineering design.

Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial:

It was opened in 1956, and commemorates American servicemen and women who died in World War II. It is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission.

III) Spirotech-SRD Group Limited

Spirotech-SRD are global leaders in the design, manufacture and delivery of screw conveyors, industrial vessels, elevators, feeders, dischargers and de-watering systems for the most demanding commercial environments worldwide.

Spirotech was founded in 1979 by John Owen and Derek Wheldon who set up a small workshop in Great Staughton, mainly to produce screws and replacement flight segments for the agriculture and cement industry. Spirotech started to export its products all over the world to a range of markets including food, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

During early 2005 Spirotech was sold to the SRD Group – a move which introduced silos and pressure vessels, along with screw conveyors, into the scope of supply which opened up new markets for both companies.

2013 saw Spirotech-SRD Group open its doors to a new service, maintenance and spares division based in York. . Over the last 35 years Spirotech has built its reputation on quality products engineered to the highest level. Spirotech today employs over 70 staff, some of which have been with the business since its doors opened in 1979, and remain the life blood of the company ensuring their years of experience is passed on to the next generation of staff.

Here are all components that Spirotech-SRD designs, manufactures:

Waste Compactor, this material squeeze and twist wastes through a cutter plate, after that the wastes enter a unique compaction chamber. This technology allows to reduce the waste volume.

Pressure vessel, a pressure vessel is to hold gases or liquids at a pressure substantially different from the ambient pressure in a vessel closed.

Chain conveyor, they are used for moving products down an assembly line, around manufacturing or warehousing facilities.

Screw conveyor, they allow to carry several products (horizontally or vertically).

Pipe work, Spirotech-SRD can manufacture pipes in wide variety of material.

Mix tank, they are used for mixing.

Organisation: The company works with several departments, if Spirotech-SRD wants to realize a good project, all departments are concerned. The elements have to follow this prodecure:

All steps are important, because if there is a mistake in any department, the element won’t be perfect and the customer can ask to the company to take back this one and to correct all parts which don’t match with the request. It’s very important for Spirotech to have a component without mistake to avoid complain from customer.

IV) Mission When I started my internship in Spirotech-SRD I didn’t know anything about my mission. During my first day, I met my mentor, I watched how he worked for 1 day and I understood the goal of my missions were. My mentor asked me if I would prefer to work within office or in the welding, the cleaning, the painting, the bending department... I answered him that I wanted to discover all departments to know how this company work and met a lot of people to speak in English. My missions consisted in:

- Understanding and learning how Spirotech-SRD Groups Limited works.

- Learning the arrangements in a manufacturing company.

- Working in all departments, realizing tasks and assisting employees.

Office: For my first 2 weeks of internship, I worked in the office. I started to translate their operating manual (screw conveyor) into French. It was interesting because it allowed me to learn many technical words in English and to understand how a screw conveyor worked. The vocabulary used in this company is very specific, when I didn’t know a word, I wrote it in a book to remind it. This manual included 26 pages. I was always in the office but my position had been changed for 2 weeks, during these weeks, I drew on a computer with the AUTOCAD software. Engineers called us and explained what they wanted, after that, we went and saw in this company where components were located and we had to take measures. My project was to manufacture a screw conveyor for a customer. I went to this company and I asked questions about this project to make a good and a very accurate draw. I had to be careful, because if there were a mistake, the employees in the workshop couldn’t manufacture this screw conveyor. I drew this screw conveyor with my mentor (Annexe 1). When this part was finished, we were able to start and order materials. We ordered metal plates, bolts, washers, nuts, tubes, motor and wires. Spirotech-SRD had a storekeeper who was in charge of the good receipt this order. At the arrival of the metal plates in the store, we warned the person in charge of the laser machine to cut these plates according to our wish. We gave him a draw with all information.

Bending department: I went in bending department, it was very different, I was in the workshop with blue-collar workers. We were 2 people in this department, it was amazing. I have been 2 weeks in this department. The first machine Press brake was for the elements with angle, it was really accurate. This machine is very strong, it was possible to bend the metal plate up to 90 degrees. It had an intuitive touch-screen man/machine interface. It was possible for users to remotely monitor the operation of the machine, transfer programs and perform diagnostics.

The second machine was to make a circle form,

currently used for the envelopes. The third machine was the screw flight press:

The procedure was the same for all machines. We put the metal plate inside and we managed the machine with the command board, we choose the angle and we turned as we

wanted. We bended progressively with tact, it was better to make slowly than start all again. Here are the steps in the bending department: In this department, my colleague didn’t find a solution to bend a big element in the press brake. We had to find a new program. I took the decision to try and create this one with the machine manual. I wrote this program in the intuitive touch-screen and that was efficient. I explained to my colleague how to create a new program with this machine.

I was in the bending department mostly to follow the project to manufacture the screw conveyor that I drew. We bended all project elements. This job was very hard, we lifted massive charge. After bending, the elements went to the painting department, where workers used a special painting which should resist to corrosive product, cool, warm, rain... depending on where is the screw conveyor location. I hadn’t the chance to go to the painting department.

The welding and assembly department: I finished my internship in this department, which is the most important for me. We were in a box, and we had a lot of machines and tools to assembly all elements. We got back bended elements and elements which didn’t need to be blended. The draw we had showed us all the elements, the way to assembly and where it should be done. In case of doubt, the welders had possibility to check with their colleagues in the (located above the workshop). For my project, it was easy because I was the drawer. We always started to gathering all elements and checking if all components were there. We watched the draw, sometimes we had elements which couldn’t be in the laser machine and we had to cut ourselves with a cutting machine. We cleaned all elements, removing the marks of the laser machine with a grander and flap disc. We assembled as one goes along with a big concentration, we established an order to assembly correctly. We began the welding. Regarding to me, I couldn’t weld because it was hard at the beginning, because I hadn’t had experience. I welded on the plate to train myself in order to make a welding alone. There are 2 kinds of welding, with and without wire. After some weeks, I really welded on a piece of screw conveyor without a big impact if I had made a mistake. When the welding was finished, we cleaned it so that there weren’t marks. Moreover, we had a lot of tasks to realize at the same time. We had to drill, tap, cut ... We installed the motor with gear box, chain, transmission... We checked the screw (longer, angles,...) and this one went into casing. We assembled motor and screw. From now on, we had the possibility to close the screw conveyor.

The quality department

came and checked. To realize tests, check speed and noise (<80dB). The screw conveyor was finished and it could be delivered to the customer. Obviously, I hadn’t made only one screw conveyor during 12 weeks, I worked on several projects at the same time. Although I worked on a lot of different projects, the procedure remained the same. Here are some projects that I built during my internship:

Despite all components were finished correctly, we had some problems (wrong bending, welding or assembling). When we did a mistake, usually we had to begin again, it was a waste of time and we had to respect the deadline gave by the customer. In this company, it’s unacceptable to have delay. If you are late on a project, you work overtime or during the week-end.

V) Cultural differences

England country has a lot of differences with France. I think, it’s probably one of the countries with most differences between our culture and abroad countries.

1) Driving in England

My first preoccupation before leaving in England was to drive. In England everybody drive on the left side. It’s really weird when you take over a car on the right or when you drive in a roundabout in another side. Although this difference is important, I took this habit really quickly, during my internship I drove 10,000 km because my flat was situated far from the company where I worked. When I came back in France, I had always this habit. The limited speed is difference on the motorway. In France it’s 130 km/h whereas in England it’s 115 km/h. There is a lot of lorries and English people drive anyhow. When a lorry driver decides to overtake, you must wait because he will force. I saw a lot of accidents between cars and trucks on the motorways. There are a lot of radars (flash and average speed) in England. People used to rive quickly After having met some English people, I asked them, “why a considerable number people drive so speed?”. They answered “In England, people drive according to salary”. The problem is the same when you walk in the city. You must always watch on the right before crossing the road. Furthermore, it’s very dangerous because drivers let cross rarely walkers. Fortunately, I was in England with my own car, so I hadn’t problem with driving on the right. At last, always traffic jam, traffic jam, traffic jam and traffic jam. It’s really good to drive without toll. Motorway is free and you can travel easily BUT you must plan that you will have traffic jam. In England, a major party of motorways have only 2 rows and inevitably during rush hours everybody are still... Along my first week, I was irrited out of this traffic. I saw everybody without stress, for them, it was normal. Obviously, I became like them after some weeks, I was relax. The traffic lights are also different. There are red and orange colours light together before the green one.

2) Currency The currency is different. In France we pay in euro (€) and in England they pay in pounds (£). This year, we were lucky because the exchange rate has changed with the BREXIT. Before BREXIT (about) : £1 = 1,32€ After BREXIT (about) : £1 = 1,13€ When you have to pay rent for 3 months, it’s really reasonable.

15

3) Gardens and parks I lived in Cambridge and I visited a lot of cities. I noticed that there were a significant number of parks and gardens. During a guided tour, I knew that the English people built parks because they don’t have gardens. These parks allow people to relax, read a book, play or rest. They can a barbecue in this place.

4) Meals I knew that English people ate a big breakfast but I didn’t know that they ate all the time, as they want. Breakfast: We used to eat sweet in the morning with cookies, cereals,… In England, English people eat salty with ham, rice, eggs… I tried to eat the same food in the morning, it wasn’t possible for me, I didn’t succeed.

5) Cities without car At least, they try. In big cities like Cambridge, London, Birmingham,… English people try to promote to take bus, bike, train,… For example, in Cambridge, there are a lot of students and the cities have created a law « any people working at least of 5 miles from job haven’t to take their car ». All big cities had created cycles park in downtown. In London, if you drive with your car in downtown, you must pay £11.5 per day.

Image 35, English breakfast Image 36, french breakfast

Image 37, cycles park

16

6) Style In England, anybody can walk quietly with a particular style. I saw people with red hair, wear in fluorescent,… In France these people will be stare at. Many people come to England for this reason, everyone does what he wants. Furthermore, you can find a job with any style, if you are an engineer in England you can have tattoo, piercings, dress as you want,… It’s not a problem. In France it’s different, you have to be well dressed and cleaned.

7) Politic Politic is different, in France, we have a president to manage our country although in England there is a Queen (Elisabeth II).

8) School England has kept uniform at school. The English government believes that school uniforms play a valuable role in contributing to the ethos of schools. I lived in Cambridge, and I saw a graduation. All students walked along the river with their uniform and hat while there family followed them. After this walk, they had a ceremony like France. Furthermore, they were students of King’s college (famous one). For me, it’s a good thing. They haven’t problem to dress in the morning. Moreover, students have the same dress and it’s really good because in France you can be criticized and alone because you don’t dress like others people. Whereas it’s not a problem in England.

9) Small differences

Tips in restaurant: When I went to the restaurant, I discovered a particularity. When you pay the bill by credit card, be careful, you start by dial the tips amount and after you dial your code. If you don’t speak English very well, you can do a mistake, you give a tips with 4 figures (really nice person…). I think that the bank will be disagree. Camera: In England there are cameras anywhere in the cities. That is a good idea, because there are less attacks, muggings, fights,… In France we begin to install more and more cameras in big cities. Time difference: It’s a small difference, but you have to take time difference into account. For example, I’m a football fan. In France the games begin at 9p.m whereas in England they begin at 8 p.m. Don’t forget this point otherwise you will miss the beginning of the game. Plug: The plug isn’t the same. You must buy an adaptor. Unfortunately, I bought an iron in England and I had to buy an adaptor to plug in my iron in a socket French.

Alcohol: English people are really strict. If you are less than 25, you must show your ID card. I had this experience, I was with my girlfriend and she had forgotten her ID card. Even I shown mine they didn’t accept to purchase alcohol, I should wait for 24 hours before coming back. Accommodation: EXPENSIVE! It was true that I lived in a famous city. It was really hard to find a flat because people didn’t want for a 3 months contract (only 6 months minimum) and I couldn’t live in a share house because I had my girlfriend and my dog with me. The only flat I had found was a studio in the north of Cambridge. It was a converted garage, really short flat for an amount of £1000 per month! I hadn’t the choice to take this one otherwise we went in a hotel.

18

VI) Differences at work Break time: In English companies, people have a break at 10 a.m. (15 minutes), they eat their breakfast at this moment. During my internship I have been working with Afghan people and I have been really well welcoming, I ate with them. We were 4, and each one brought something (food, cookies, tea…), everybody ate in the same plate seating on a carpet on the floor in the workshop. They had another break at 1 p.m. (30 minutes), they lunched. As far as I am concerned, I never took a lunch, because I had already ate too much at 10 a.m. Hours per week: In general, English people work at least 37 hours per week. Obviously, they work more. During the break lunch, most of them work and eat at the same time. In offices, people work about from 39 hours to 44 hours per week. In workshop, it’s different. People work a basic 40 hour week and overtime when needed. Quality: Quality is very important. There a lot of signs in workshops.

Shake hands: In France everybody shakes hands. On the contrary, in England it’s really rare. In Spirotech, the first day you shake hands to introduce yourself. The next day, you say only « good morning », it’s quicker!

VII) Activities During my mission abroad, I visited cities in England:

1: Cambridge and Oxford with their famous universities. Oxford has about 153 900 people including 30 000 students. Two rivers cross the city, Cherwell and Tamise. The buildinds of Oxford are very beautiful with an impressive architecture. As a result, this city is named “city of dreaming spires”. I visited this city, and this one look like Cambridge because it is a students city with many universities and colleges. 2: Peterborough with a big cathedral.

_ Buckingham Palace, it is the London residence and administrative headquarters of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a focal point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and mourning.

4: Brighton, Margate and Whitstable, with their beaches. Brighton, Margate and Whitstable are a seaside city. Brighton is a beautiful city located in the south of England, this one is touristic. There is a cute beach with a funfair along the sea. Famous for diverse communities, quirky shopping areas, large cultural, music and arts scene. Margate is located in the east of England in Kent county. it has a big port. Whitstable is different, it isn’t a sand beach like Brighton and Margate. It has a pebble beach with little grass along the sea. There are huts on the beach with several colors, it is really cute!

12: Several Football Games, I am fan of football and I knew that in England the football is very important. I watched 3 games of Arsenal FC (Club in the North of London) especially a derby between Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC. I was happy because my favorite team won 3-0 and the atmosphere in the stadium (Emirates Stadium has about 60 000 seats). This stadium is beautiful and very big! I also watched Leicester FC, they are the last champion of premier league in England (2015-2016), the stadium called King Power Arena, it has 32 0000 seats. My mentor in England took me to watch Nottingham Forest in the second division in City Ground stadium (30 000 seats).

13: Distillery of Whisky, I visited only distillery in England located close to Norwich. It make “English whisky”. When you visit this one, a guide will then take you onto the distilling floor and explain how whisky is made. You then move onto Warehouse 1 to see the whisky in casks, and to breathe in the amazing aroma caused by the Angels Share escaping.

14: Race MOTOGP in Silverstone. I watched the race of MOTOGP. I am fan of moto and to watch racers really speed was amazing for me. I had opportunities to meet several racers in the stand to take a picture with them. Thank to my company in England, it has paid my ticket for this event. Racers drive up to 350 km/h, it was impressive!! Silverstone is a track very particular because this circuit is also used for formula one.

15: Color run, this is a race (running) of 5km in Birmingham. During this race people throw a color powder. This one is presented by skittles is the original, largest and unique 5km in the world to celebrate healthiness, happiness and friendship! After this race, there is a festival with music and many animations.

My internship was very interesting. I loved visiting England. This country is really beautiful and welcoming!

VIII) Conclusion This internship abroad is probably the best experience in my life. To be in another country with a lot of cultural differences needs to adapt yourself. Although I have had certainly spent the best moments in my life, I also lived the worst. I used to be with my family, girlfriend, friends… and overnight I was alone, it was really hard. I have loved meet English people and work in a company with a different way to proceed, other rules, cultures,… I thank the CESI to give me this opportunity to work abroad and discover a different company than my apprentice one in France. It was interesting to see how a metallurgy company worked, to understand all working departments (welding, bending, painting, etc). I met nice people. My mentor in England helped me and he was really important for me during my internship. I had the occasion to see him out of the company and to speak with him about our cultural differences. I am convinced that this internship will help me in the future. I have improved my English language, my adaptation in another environment, my general culture, autonomy and trust in me. I came back mentally stronger.
