The Center offers a safe, positive, and nurturing environment for purposeful and spiritual direction. They strive to keep Christ at the center of their activities delivering His hope, forgiveness, and salvation to people daily. Their mission statement is: Teaching, Nourishing and Transforming - Sharing God's love. The Alpha Center has four main services: Serving meals, emergency pantry, after school and summer children's programming, rent and utility assistance. They moved into their current location at 330 E Court Street, Sidney, Ohio, in July 1992. It was at this time that the North Dayton District assigned us to serve at this mission. Three or four times a year on Tuesday night, we cooked a meal for the center. Henrietta Hahn was in charge of the meals. There is a short worship service and then we eat. Because we always cook on the fifth Tuesday of the month, the people are always hungry since their food stamps are gone. One time we had a man tell us he had not eaten for three days. They are always very appreciative of the meal. The Sunday School Class Closest to Heaven is now in charge of the meals. We would like to thank the Sunday School Class in the Parlor for covering the cost of food for our last meal. If anyone is interested in volunteering to help supply or serve a meal, please let us know.

Wonder Women

Heroes, comics, and Marvel and DC characters used to be primarily a male interest. Not so anymore. The biggest superhero fan in my home is not my son, but rather my daughter, Chloe. She enjoys the unique talents each superhero brings to the table. She dives into the epic story of good versus evil, rooting for the good guys and gals to win the day when darkness looms. The recent explosion of superhero movies are attracting males and females alike, with many films bringing additional emphasis to the critical role of previously lesser-known female characters.

We also have a magnet on our refrigerator at home of Wonder Woman, my wife’s favorite superhero. I often see the resemblance between the two.

Beginning May 10, we’ll be highlighting several extraordinary women in Scripture. Oftentimes we honor mothers on Mother’s Day (and rightfully so), but what about women who aren’t mothers? Or women who are struggling with infertility? Or women who simply choose to remain childless? We want to honor and recognize all women as wondrous gifts from God to us, recognizing the unique gifts and roles women possess in God’s redemptive story.

Too often women have been the overlooked characters of the biblical narrative; the ones in the background doing something important but never securing accolades of their male counterparts. Because the Bible was primarily written in a patriarchal context, the stories tend to gravitate toward men. But Jesus turns it all on its head, elevating the status and role of women throughout his public life and ministry. In fact, Luke tells us Jesus “went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene…and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward…and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources” (8:1-3 NRSV).

Women played a crucial role in Jesus’ ministry, providing resources, encouragement and support every step of the way. A woman was the first evangelist (cf. John 4:1-42). Women were the ones who remained with Jesus while he suffered on the cross while the other male disciples scattered (cf. Matthew 27:45-56). Women were the first to hear the news of his resurrection (Luke 24:1-10). Women were also instrumental to the expansion of Christianity early on as well, with many notable women highlighted throughout the book of Acts.

We hope you’ll plan to join us each Sunday in May (starting May 10) to discover the mighty wonder women in Scripture. All the while, we’ll have opportunity to honor and bless the amazing women who make the world a better place by the sheer virtue of their presence among us. Come and be blessed!

Together with you in Christ,

Rev. Kenneth A. Stewart

Dear Friends in Mission:

Thank you for support of the United Methodist Committee of Relief (UMCOR). Through your gift, you are helping to provide assistance for survivors of human trafficking, funding for health and development projects that alleviate hunger and poverty, holistic community-based health programs, and access to clean water and sanitation. This is just a sampling of the good works that gifts like yours make possible. Thank you for giving so generously.

Improvements and Upgrades

Last month, Eric Sweetman wrote an article updating us on the status of the media ministry. He expressed the need for new projectors in the sanctuary to cap the improvements we’ve been making elsewhere. We also have additional needs for new microphones, since many are failing. Clearly, the media ministry has made an enormous impact to enrich our worship experience and is a critical component of our weekly gatherings. But like all equipment, nothing lasts forever.

We would like to express a call to our congregation to meet these needs. After all, Paul writes, “how can people believe in Jesus if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear unless someone tells them?” (Romans 10:14). We will need approximately $10,000 to upgrade our projectors (which will project a sharper and brighter image) and microphones (which will help us hear more clearly). Previous upgrades included new amplification and speaker equipment; this would represent “phase 2” of the overall project.

Together, we can make this happen. Thank you for helping others see, hear and embrace the greatest message the world will ever know. We’ll keep you posted on our progress along the way, and appreciate whatever assistance you can provide. If you’d like to make a donation toward this project, please earmark it for “Media” and we will ensure it is directed appropriately.

Your co-laborer in Christ,

Rev. Kenneth A. Stewart

Pastor Kenneth’s Ordination Celebration

In early June our West Ohio Annual Conference will again be held at Lakeside Chautauqua. I will be representing Greene Street and look forward to the event. It is work! Some days are twelve hours of meetings where we hear reports on things happening at the Conference and local levels, adopt resolutions, discuss programs and budgets, observe the ordination of clergy as deacons and elders, and this year, elect delegates for jurisdictional and General Conference. We also share in worship services and hear messages from our Bishop and selected church leaders from across the country.

A highlight this year will be the ordination ceremony that brings our own Pastor Kenneth into the United Methodist Church as an ordained elder. While Pastor Kenneth is already an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren, this ceremony recognizes the additional training and coursework he has completed since becoming Greene Street’s spiritual leader and formalizes his appointment to the West Ohio Conference. The Celebration of Life and Ministry Service will be held in Hoover Auditorium on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30.

Our congregation will be celebrating with the Stewart family after church on Sunday, June 14. For those who would also like to observe the Tuesday service at Lakeside, childcare buses will be transporting Greene Streeters to and from Hoover Auditorium. The buses will be leaving Piqua after lunch and be returning after the ceremony and a small reception at Lakeside. More specific details will be announced closer to conference time.

Should you want to attend the Celebration of Life and Ministry Service and take advantage of the bus transportation, contact the church office to reserve your spot? If you have questions, please contact the office or me; Pastor Kenneth’s accomplishment is something we all should celebrate.

The recent Boy Scout Food Drive was a huge success and brought in a record 1,763 items! Thank you to those who volunteered and those who donated. We also extend a special thank you to Cub Scout Troup #295, led by Steve Grise, who helped sort and put away the food items. This effort was "above and beyond" and was truly appreciated. THANK YOU Steve Grise, Tommy Grise, Tanner Beck, Nate Studebaker, Cheryl Beck, Thomas Beck, Matthew Studebaker, Michael Nelson, and John Nelson.

As recognized during a recent Sunday worship service, we were blessed to receive a $2500 donation from Monsanto as a result of being nominated by the Meckstroth family. This monetary donation will help us to continue to provide additional food items, such as hamburger, in addition to the non-perishable food items currently being generously donated.

On May 9th, we will be participating in the Postal Food Drive. This drive requires numerous volunteers. We would appreciate any, and all, help. If you are willing to help this year, please see Diana Hall or contact the church office.
