PRESIDENT
Wow!! Awesome!! Wonderful!! Thankful!! These are the words that I would use to describe our District Prayer
Breakfast last month. The ladies at First UMC in Gastonia did so much to make us feel right at home. We had around
475 in attendance. Thank you so much for the support you gave to our first District event for 2014. Our next district
event will be our District Mission Study and the front page of this newsletter has much information on this study. Be
sure to read Mary Ann’s article too and make plans to attend. I look forward to being with you on May 17th.
Nurturing Partners……do you know what this is??? We have divided the churches in the Catawba Valley District
between all the district officers. Each district officer has committed to visit their units. These are called LUV visit, Local
Unit Visitation visits. We want you to know we are here for the women of our local units. If you have any questions, or
if we can help in anyway, please do not hesitate to call on us. Please email or call your nurturing partner and ask them to
come and give a program, speak at your United Methodist Women’s Sunday, ask for their help with a Children’s Sab-
bath or just ask them to come for a visit. If you can’t reach your nurturing partner just give me a call and I will get them
connected with you.
Thank you so much for all you do to promote the work of the United Methodist Women, here in the Catawba Valley
District. Because of your dedication and the dedication of other women, the United Methodist Women will be celebrat-
ing our 145th year in mission. You are the ones who make mission possible.
In His Service,
Karen
VICE PRESIDENT
Our Spiritual Growth Committee did a great job with our Prayer Breakfast in March. If you missed it, our Historian
has posted pictures on Facebook under Catawba Valley United Methodist Women. Go on line and “like” us, so you can
have access to all our events.
I hope all of you are striving to become a Mission Today Unit. It’s not at all complicated, but if you have any ques-
tions, please contact your Nurturing Partner. She will be glad to visit your group and talk with you about each of the
criteria or about the Reading Program, Gifts in Mission, Action Network, or on whatever you need more details. Don’t
know who your Nurturing Partner is? Any of the District Officers can give you this information. You should be getting
a letter from your Nurturing Partner.

MISSION COORDINATOR SOCIAL ACTION
Greetings Ladies,
I hope you are enjoying this wonderful spring season. May the longer and warmer days bless your heart.
Let me first remind you that our social action priorities for 2014 remain as for 2013:
1. To continue education and advocacy about Human Trafficking
2. To continue education and advocacy about Domestic Violence
3. To continue education and advocacy about Immigration Reform
For those wanting to do a presentation on Human Trafficking, the link to the program manual is
prod.umwomen.org:88/ht/packet. Please go to our website (www.wnccumw.org) to keep abreast of what we are doing
in these three areas and others needing our voice.
And let’s not forget that racial justice continues to be a priority for United Methodist Women. I hope your units are
incorporating the Charter in your meetings and working toward becoming a UMW Justice Today unit.
Lastly, please take a few minutes to visit the General Board of Church and Society website to read the initiative to boy-
cott Soda Stream: www.umc-gbcs.org/faith-in-action/boycott-sodastream.
Please let me know if I can assist you with programs, via email [email protected], or phone 704-462-
2251.
Yours in Christ,
Phyllis Leatherman
SECRETARY OF PROGRAM RESOURCES
Greetings UMW Sisters,
It was wonderful seeing all of you at the Prayer Breakfast. I hope you found plenty of good books to read. I hope
you have not forgotten about children’s books. This is a great way to not only complete the reading program for yourself
but also for future UMW or UMM members and you both get a certificate. Two new ones to get you started are: Sheila
Says We’re Weird (Social Action) and Traveler (Spiritual Growth). If you have not participated in the children’s reading
program, I hope you will give it prayerful consideration.
I look forward to seeing you at the Mission Study at Messiah UMC. The Resource Room will open at 8:30. If your
unit needs anything, please feel free to contact me.
