    FROM THE PASTORS DESK

    Dear Parish Family,

Merry Christmas! As the angel proclaimed tothe shepherds in Bethlehem: Peace on earth

and good will to all! On behalf of the Francis-can friars and Covenant members, the staffs ofthe Mission, Parish, and parish school (OldMission Montessori)-- and all of our lay minis-ters and volunteers, we wish each and allevery blessing of this day and season ofChrists birth and Love! And in a special way,Father Adrian, Father Luis, and I personally ex-tend to you and your families our very bestwishes. May this be for you a time of greatcelebration and joy in the company of familyand close friends.

Close is the key word in todays celebration, isnt it? Through the Incarnation of JesusChrist, our Emmanuelliterally, our God withusGod gets close to humankind. Heavenand earth embrace, the poets tell us. Noneof heavens escalators are going up (today),

reflects the contemporary preacher and writerBarbara Brown Taylor. Everybody up there iscoming down right here, right into our ownBethlehem, bringing us the God who has de-cided to make us his home in our arms.

How can we resist the story of the birth of Je-sus? It is, of course, the great story of theChristian faithand for us as followers of Je-suspart of the greatest story of all time. It is,

in a very direct and personal way, our story, too. The story of our own lives, the story ofour families, of our personal history and en-counter with the Lord. For adults, everyChristmas brings with it memories and reflec-tions of all of the Christmases of our lives. Forchildren, Christmas provides the rush and flush

of excitementthe very real and intense experi-ences of sights, sounds, smells, impressions, dreams, and feelings that make an indelible markon ones live. No wonder we take every care tomake sure that every child should have a beautifulChristmas. At no other time in the year is loveour love and Gods Lovemade so clearly present,

concrete, physical, accessible, and real. No wondertheologians call it the In-carn-ationthe literalen-flesh-ment of the Word made Flesh-- ofChrists physical arrival in our midst.

But Christmas is not just another day. And it cer-tainly not confined to the realm of memory, nomatter how beautiful our recollections may be. Itis unlike any other day in that it starts but neverreally ends. The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem is not

just the historic event of more than 2000 yearsago. It is today. Christ is born today! And each andevery day until the end of time. Christmas Daymarks the beginning of the Christ among us whowill never ever leave us, but is with us always. TheSpirit of Jesus born in Bethlehem infuses the worldwith His living Presence a Presence that we asChurch commemorate and celebrate in Word andEucharist every single day. May the Peace andLove and Life of Jesus Christ, our Savior, our Em-manuel, be in our hearts and lives now and always!

    Merry Christmas!

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

YEAR END PLANNINGIf you have been reading the business section of either

of our local papers you have no doubt noticed that theyear end tax advice columns are starting to appear. Thelast quarter of the year is the time to take the necessaryactions to reduce that tax liability that looms just around

the corner. Many folks choose charitable giving as theavenue to reduce those taxes. If this is your plan pleasedo not forget our parish.

If you need to make a mandatory IRA withdrawal thiscan be done directly to the church and tax can beavoided. We know that there are many demands on yourresources, and many charitable organizations asking foryour gift, just remember that what you give to yourchurch is used right here. It may be for food for theneedy, education for our youth, or services to other sec-tors of our community, but it stays here.

If there is a special need that you would like your gift to

address just say so with a note and we will honor yourwish. Thank you for all that you do and all that you give. Our parish is stronger and better able to cope with localneeds because of your gifts.

What is prayer? Will it help me? How do you pray? Thislarge category in our library offers a variety of books for guid-ance and renewal.

Thomas H. Greens book, Opening to God, A Guide toPrayer, challenges us to transform our daily routine into a lifeof prayer. He first defines prayer & then discusses how Godseeks us & how we can respond to our divine Pursuer.

In Listen With the Heart, Sacred Moments in Everyday Life,Sister Joan Chittister teaches us how to appreciate the sacred

in each moment by identifying patterns of behavior that canlead to a richer awareness. She concludes with a collection ofmeditations on the true meaning of blessings in life such ascommunity and music.

Beginning Contemplative Prayer, Out of Chaos Into Quiet,by Kathryn J. Hermes, is a guide to the 2000 year old practiceof contemplative prayer in the Church. Hermes presents thebenefits and meaning of contemplative prayer in a rapidlychanging society; practicalities such as finding time & how tobetter use it; & various types of contemplative prayer.

    CATECHETICAL MINUTEROMAN MISSAL QUESTION

QuestionWhat happened to the Gloria and

why have we not been singing it?

AnswerThe Gloria comes to us from a Christmas Mass of

bishops in the sixth century. So to answer thisquestion today is very appropriate.

The Gloria did not go anywhere; we traditionallydo not sing the Gloria in advent, as we are in a pe-riod of preparation for the nativity when we pro-claim in the Gloria the glory of god witnessed bythe shepherds!

The Gloria is a hymn of praise modeled on New

Testament canticles and as the text suggests it ispreferably sung not recited.

The Glorias text has changed in the new transla-tion. From the original text the more extensive lit-any from the Latin has been restored; we praiseyou/we bless you/we adore you/we glorify you/we

give you thanks for your great glory. These re-stored lines bring the feel of a litany that continuesto grow as the prayer culminates in the last line.

In the next section, the tone reflects a creed with

expressions such as only begotten son and youareseated at the right hand of the father. This fo-cus is to direct our attention on Christ and his rolein salvation.

The last section completes the hymn with a Trini-tarian doxology with a specific emphasis on Christ.

8 |PARROQUIAMISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California 25 de diciembre del 2011

    Querida Familia Parroquial,

Feliz Navidad!

or.

TREASURES FROM OURTRADITIONAn old joke asks, "What time is Midnight Mass?" The

answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is uniquein having several distinct celebrations. The readingsand prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The VigilMass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and hisorigins. The concept of "midnight" predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours ofdarkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receiveCommunion without fasting for a full day, so the latehour of this Mass made it possible for the people toreceive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn,

was once known as "The Shepherds' Mass," and laterMasses set aside stories of Jesus' birth to focus on thekey to the day's celebration: John the Evangelist's ma- jestic theology of Christ's identity as the Word madeflesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separateMasses. Only monasteries manage the whole round.Parishioners typically take just one entry point into themystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate inthe coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not aday, but a season. You still have two weeks to sendthose Christmas cards before you're officially late!
