From The Pastors Desk
Parish News & Happenings done directly to the church and tax can be avoided. Weknow that there are many demands on your resources,
and many charitable organizations asking for your gift,
just remember that what you give to your church is used
right here. It may be for food for the needy, education
for our youth, or services to other sectors of our
community, but it stays here.
If there is a special need that you would like your gift to
address, just say so with a note and we will honor your
wish. Thank you for all that you do and all that you give.
Our parish is stronger and better able to cope with local
needs because of your gifts.
- Allen Hartman, Business Manager
YEAR END PLANNING
If you have been reading the businesssection of either of our local papers you
have no doubt noticed that the year end
tax advice columns are starting to appear.
The last quarter of the year is the time to
take the necessary actions to reduce that tax liability that
looms just around the corner. Many folks choose
charitable giving as the avenue to reduce those taxes. If
this is your plan please do not forget our parish. If you
need to make a mandatory IRA withdrawal, this can be
Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! Peace on earth to all people of
good will!
On behalf of all of the Franciscan friars here at
Mission San Luis Rey, the incredibly hardworking and
dedicated staff at our parish, our parish school (OldMission Montessori) and religious education
programsand on behalf of all of the extraordinary
members of our parish family who so consistently
dedicate their time, talents, and treasure to our
community through so many projects and ministries
we wish you, each and every one, a Season filled with
Christs Peace, Blessing, Joy, and Hope.
Thinking about Christmas this year, I am reminded of
an experience I had attending a childrens Christmas
Mass in Ohio a number of years ago. The bishop of the
diocese where I was visiting had invited children from
throughout the area to attend. The atmosphere in the
cathedral was wonderfully chaotic, as you can imagine,
with everyone from toddlers to teens packed in and
bubbling with enthusiasm. The liturgy went wellvery
well. And at the conclusion, the bishop, overwhelmed
with excitement and emotion, blurted out: You know,
Christmas is such a wonderful holiday, we should
celebrate it every single year!--- Err. I mean, we
should celebrate it every single day! Too late; the cat
was out of the bag. The congregation roared. And the
poor bishop blushed, smiled and just shrugged hisshoulders good-naturedly. Aw cmon, you know what I
mean!
The bishops intended point was well taken, of
course. Christmas is such a wonderful holiday that we
should celebrate it every single day. We would all
agree with the ideal, but many people have problems
celebrating Christmas for even one whole day, never
mind every single one. All this hype, all this buildup of
expectations for a single 24-hour period during which
everyone is supposed to experience the perfection of
joy and peace on cue. Of course, the expectation is
impossible to fulfill.
That does not tarnish or diminish the idealour ideal
as Christiansone little bit. Media hype and clichs
aside, we are calledat, in, and through Christmasto
enter more deeply into the incredible mystery of the
Incarnation. A mystery which cannot be confined to a
single day, but necessarily spreads itself out,
permeating and percolating through every moment of
our graced existence. Christ, our Emmanuelour
God with us is really with us. And always will be.
The feasts of the Church during these great and holy
holidays calls us to a deeper awareness of that lovingand sustaining Presence: the birth of Jesus in
Bethlehem, the commemoration of the first martyrs of
the Christian faith (Stephen and the Holy Innocents),
the celebration of the Holy Family, the Solemnity of
Mary, the Mother of God-- and the culminating
commemoration of the Baptism of the Lord.
Christ Incarnate is indeed the Reason for the
Seasonthis and every single day and every single
season of our lives.
Merry Christmas!
Fr. Chuck

BOOK OF THE WEEK:
The Priesthood of the FaithfulKey to a Living Church
by Fr. Paul Philibert
If you are a baptized Catholic, you have been called to the
common priesthood of the Body of Christ. What does that
mean? Fr. Philibert answers this question in his book, The
Priesthood of the Faithful.
The New Testament describes the baptized as a holy
priesthood and a priestly people. Vatican II clearly taught
that the baptized become a holy priesthood. Their
personal fidelity and lives, led in loving obedience to the
Gospel, become spiritual sacrifices offered along with the
Body of the Lord in the Eucharist. This book is the first study
in English to explore systemically this key doctrine of
Christian faith and examine its significance for the spiritual
growth of the faithful and for the revitalization of the
Church. The time is ripe for this long-neglected treasure of
New Testament faith to become central to the Churchs
preaching, ministry and evangelization.

Stewardship MessageJesus is Gods ultimate gift of love to us. And the only
appropriate way for us to respond to such generous love is
with our own generous love. When we dedicate our lives to
sharing all the many gifts that God has placed within our
hands, the peace of Christ truly will control our hearts. We
will know Christmas joy every day.

SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE
This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family,
which comes on the first Sunday after
Christmas Day. Today's feast celebrates how
the humanity of Jesus (including his entire
family life) has brought saving significance into
the daily rhythms of our human family life.
The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement onhow to share--within our families, parish families, and the
wider human family--the love that God shares with us in
Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians
encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in
all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew's
Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph
took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture
them within the larger family of faith of their time.(c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

8 |PARROQUIAMISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California 26 de diciembre del 2010
Querida Familia Parroquial,Paz y Todo Bien!
sia y as evitar la contribucin a pagar.
