Greetings Chamber members,

This month, I’d like to take some time to point out a few up-coming local events. First, Farm to Fork is right around the cor-ner (August 17th). I hope you can join us for this unique dining experience showcasing local foods and wines. For more infor-mation or to purchase tickets for the event, please visit Chamber’s website at: www.thedalleschamber.com/product/farm-to-fork. Second, the Wasco County Youth Livestock Auction is Sunday, August 25, 2019, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Wasco County Fairgrounds in Tygh Valley, Oregon. Please come support our 4H and FFA youth who have been working tremendously hard to raise animals for auction. The proceeds from the auction go to covering the cost of raising the animals and for next year’s event. For more information, you can visit their facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/WCYLA/.

As you have likely gathered from your local news sources, as well as the many Chamber emails you have received, this year’s legislative session was extremely active. I want to give special thanks to Senator Cliff Bentz and Representative Daniel Bonham for their tireless efforts in representing our interests. I’d also like to thank the Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee and our CEO Lisa Farquharson who stayed on top of legislative issues affecting local businesses. You all did a great job and your efforts are very much appreciated!

Lastly, as a quick update, on August 14th, our CEO Lisa Farquharson and board members Connie Ford and Jennifer Gonzalez will be attending a training in Salem entitled “Building Your Best Team Ever.” The event is a one-day intensive and interactive leadership training focused on providing strategies to building an effective and dynamic leadership team at the Chamber. It’s great to see our Chamber staff and board members looking for ways to further improve our Chamber and develop themselves as leaders. Keep up the good work!

WELCOME TO THE CHAMBER!

Jim Mejias has joined The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce team! You may have seen his chipper attitude and loud patterned shirts out and about in town running Gorge Works’ 9-week Summer Internship Program. He has started focusing

efforts on handling Tourism & Media Relations for TDACC and the surrounding area. Originally from the East Coast with a background in marketing, Jim has been enjoying hiking, camping, volunteering time with local nonprofits and everything else

the Gorge has had to offer over the last 2 1/2 years.

BusinessMonthof theBusinessMonth

The small business of the month program is designed to recognize the dedication, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit displayed by small businesses within The Dalles community. The goal of the monthly award is to highlight a small business and give them extra marketing exposure to aid in growing their business.

We asked Helping Hands Home Care, our 2018 Business of the Year, to select the Business of the Month. The business is selected based on their quality customer service, willingness to go above and beyond and overall impact to our community.

Last Stop Hotel & Saloon 209 E 2nd Street, The Dalles.

(541) 296-3070

The Last Stop Hotel & Saloon was originally established

in 1898, it has been the home of many bars and

restaurants over the years as well as a hotel and we

understand a brothel or “place of negotiable affection.”

A phrase coined by Mary Davis a local Historian and

volunteer at the Fort Dalles Museum.

It has been called the “Hotel Albert”, has been occupied

by the “Citizens National Bank, and the French &

Community Bank. The hotel also had a first class grill in

the early 1900’s and at one time was the home of the

“Celilo Room”, which was a private bar. Records of the

hotel show having several permanent female residents

and have heard some interesting stories about those

residents.

In the early 1840s, American settlers began to arrive in

The Dalles in significant numbers traveling overland via

the Oregon Trail. The trail ended in The Dalles.

It wasn’t possible to take wagons further than The

Dalles due to the Columbia river and the steep cliffs

surrounding them. In 1846 the Barlow road was

constructed and the Oregon Trail was extended and the

official end was relocated in Oregon City. Up until the

construction of the Barlow Road, The Dalles was the

official “Last Stop” of the Oregon overland trail.

Open 11:am - 3pm Monday thru Friday. Call in or drop

by. Check out their website and Facebook for full menu,

history and more.

Health & Wellness in the Workplace

Both BlueZones Project and the Swellness Committee from NCPHD shared insights on keeping a healthy work-life balance, including suggestions for after-hours social events

with coworkers, leaving time every day to stay active, positive side effects of proper sleep & nutrition

We also included time to have an open-table discussion sharing personal examples for previous employers on things they can do to increase morale and equity in the workplace.

Civic Service

Our interns met with Mayor Mays, Lisa Farquharson, and Sherry DuFault to share community contribution stories,

volunteerism, and professional networking. One part of the Q & A let to a table-wide agreement on youth being more

involved in their local area to start the changes they wish to see.

Financial Literacy

Jason Lewis (Northwest Farm Credit Services) spent time with our interns discussing the introductory points of

financial literacy and keeping a plan for financial responsibility.

Between having fun with a little bit of candy throwing and worksheets, they learned the finer points of saving for the future, watching interest rates, and hearing some genuine

stories of financial missteps!

As the Summer Internship Program comes to a close, Jim would like to thank Mayor Mays, Wasco County HR, NCPHD,

Six Rivers Mediation, Northwest Farm Credit Services, Port of The Dalles, and numerous other organizations and individuals for giving their support to this year’s program. If you’d like to be a part of this program for Summer 2020, reach out via email: [email protected]

The Dalles Art Center (TDAC)has had a long history in this community. Since it was incorporated the The Dalles Art Associ-ation has grown from being a group of artists meeting for painting sessions to a center housed in The Carnegie Library that

offers gallery representation and classes for children and adults.

Since joining the center as the new executive director in November. I have been focused on the expansion of the amazing work that my predecessors have created. Before you can have expansion you need to have a solid foundation. The initial four

months was focused on integrating an accrual accounting system, digital inventory, point of sale and customer resource management systems.

Fortunately, TDAC had received a grant from the Oregon Cultural Trust to facilitate the purchasing of computers and soft-ware to make this happen. With these systems in place, we are on the move to become a major cultural asset for The Dalles,

Wasco County, and The Columbia Gorge.

The mission for 2019 is to make TDAC a resource for helping The Dalles be the best place possible for visitors and residents. This winter and spring, we formed an Art and Design Committee to meet the needs outlined by the Mayor Rich Mays.

This committee created a dynamic new mural that brought together four different organization (The City of The Dalles, Fort Dalles Displays, TDAC, and The Chroincle) to create an amazing representation of The Dalles. This print will be on display at

the art center throughout August. A local artist, Chris Pothier, will begin painting the panels at the art center in the middle of August. Please come see the print and watch this amazing painter recreate this photographic work.

Art Education is the second focus for the year. In January, we hosted an exhibition of elementary student artwork. Work came from Mosier to Dufur. It was clear how important art was to the kids and the parents when the gallery was packed with

families.

This summer TDAC expanded the Art Camp from two hour sessions each day to a full week all day Art Camp format. We were fortunate to get excellent instructors that have broadened the curriculum to teach the fundamentals of art in an engaging

way. Last week one child said, “This is way more fun than my tablet.” Any parent will tell you how big a compliment that is for a child.

It has been an amazing experience to learn about The Dalles in the last nine months. There is a lot happening at the center and I hope that you will come by to see the exhibitions or check out the amazing artwork that these kids are meaking in the

art camp.

1. Clean the Parking LotThe simplest steps you can take to improve your property’s curb appeal come down to cleaning. Since the parking lot is

one of the first things that potential customers will see, you’ll want to start there. Hiring a commercial pressure washing

business to clean your parking lot on occasion will help you keep your building’s exterior looking nice and help to draw in

new customers.

2. Wash the WindowsIf your business’ exterior is dirty, people may assume that

your building’s interior is dirty as well. Washing your windows is an effective way to give customers a good impression of your business before they ever step inside. If your windows

are ground level, you may be able to clean them yourself, but higher windows will usually require a window washing service.

Still, even just cleaning the lower windows will make your business seem brighter and more inviting, thus helping to

improve your curb appeal.

3. Sweep the SidewalkImproving business curb appeal all comes down to going

the extra mile to impress customers. No one really expects sidewalks to be completely clean; however, if the walkways in front of your business are swept and tidy, people are going to

be impressed and are more likely to enter your building.

4. Clean the DumpstersNo one ever really thinks about the dumpsters when trying

to improve their commercial property’s curb appeal. After all, dumpsters are supposed to be dirty, right?

Not necessarily. A clean dumpster can cast a favorable im-pression on your customers. The biggest benefit of a dump-ster cleaning is that your dumpster will no longer give off a repulsive odor. The same pressure washing company that cleans your parking lot may also offer dumpster cleanings.

5. Replace or Add Business SignageTo truly refresh and improve your business’s curb appeal, you’ll need to go a bit further than cleanings. One of the

best ways to improve your property’s curb appeal is to add or update your business’ signage. Since your signage is likely

the first thing that potential customers will see, you want to make sure that your exterior and/or storefront signs look

appealing.

6. Repaint Parking Lot LinesParking lot cleanings are great, but your lot may still look bad

if the parking lines are faded. Old and faded lines may give the impression that your business is also old and therefore drive away customers. Freshly painted parking lot lines, on the other hand, will brighten up your building’s exterior and

help to invite in customers.

7. Improve Exterior LightingExterior lighting can have two benefits: increasing visibility at

night and adding beauty to your property. Outdoor light-ing can significantly improve your business’ nighttime curb appeal. HID lights in your parking lot will help customers get

to and from their cars. Pathway lighting can improve your business’ safety and appeal as customers approach your

building. You can also add other exterior lighting to improve the beauty of your business property.

8. Refresh your Building’s Paint JobClean windows and sidewalks may be overshadowed by

paint on your building that’s cracking and faded. An updat-ed paint job on your building will significantly improve curb

appeal.

9. Have some Landscaping DoneThere’s nothing quite like flowers to draw in a customer. Landscaping elements such as fresh grass, flowers, and

stonework can really help to beautify your business’ exterior.

10. Reserve your BEST parking for your customersKeep the premier parking places in front of your store, for your customers. Make sure you tell your business neigh-

bors and your staff your expectation and how it helps your customers. Maybe you can use a fun sandwich board that indicates this is for customer parking! What a treat for your

customer to feel that you did this for them.
